  • This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics and productivity in introduced hairy vetch cultivars and developed new Korean Hairy vetch cultivars in two areas of the experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Institute of Animal Science from 2005 to 2006. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. A total of 11 hairy vetch cultivars used in this study including 9 introduced cultivars (Penn-02, Sander, Latigo, Welta, Ostsaat, VV4712, Minnie, Barlosa and Capello) and 2 Korean cultivars (Cold green and Cheong pa). The early flowering varieties of Minnie, Barlosa, Capello and Cold green were grown as early maturity cultivars, while the late flowering varieties of Penn-02, Sander, Latigo, Welta, Ostsaat, VV4712 and Cheong pa were grown as medium and late maturity. The winter hardiness of hairy vetch was good except for Minnie, Barlosa and Capello of early maturity cultivars. In this study, dry matter yield of VV4712 was the highest of 11 hairy vetch cultivars. And dry matter yield of medium and late maturity vetch increased in the middle region while that of early maturity increased in the south. The new Korean cultivar, Cheong pa, as a medium and late maturity hairy vetch was not bad compared to introduced cultivars and Cold green as an early maturity hairy vetch was an excellent cultivar compared to introduced cultivars in both regions. Latigo in NDF (neutral detergent fiber) and Welta in ADF (acid detergent fiber) were lower than other cultivars, while Sander in IVDMD (in vitro dry matter digestibility) and CP (crude protein) content were higher than other cultivars. The results of this experiment indicated that the productivity of hairy vetch cultivars was highest in VV4712, and Cheong pa and Cold green of new Korean cultivar were the promising cultivars of hairy vetch in Korea.

  • This experiment was carried out to select adaptability and forage production and quality of Pasture species at paddy field from 2007 to 2009 at Chungnam province. Among growth characters, 'Tall fescue' and 'Tall fescue mixture (Orchardgrass, Tall fescue, Perennial ryegrass, Kentuck bluegrass, White clover)' were somewhat good for waterlogging, production and disease and insect resistance. Fresh yield of 'Tall fescue mixture' and 'Tall fescue' were the highest as 84,294 kg and 78,400 kg per ha among 6 species. The dry yield of 'Tall fescue mixture' and 'Tall fescue' were also the highest as 20,644 kg and 19,759 kg per ha. The result of this study showed that 'Tall fescue mixture' and 'Tall fescue' had good growth characters and forage productivity at paddy field in middle region of South Korea.

  • This experiment was carried out to select the adaptability, forage production and quality of pasture species at paddy field from 2007 to 2009 at Jeonnam province. Among pasture species, Italian ryegrass was somewhat good for waterlogging, production, and disease and insect resistance. Fresh and dry matter yields of Italian ryegrass was the highest as 67,368 kg and 17,677 kg per ha among six species. The dry yield of Tall fescue mixture (Orchardgrass, Tall fescue, Perennial ryegrass, Kentuck bluegrass, White clover) and Tall fescue were also high as 15,589 kg and 14,693 kg per ha, respectively. Crude protein of Tall fescue and Tall fescue mixture were high as 10.4% and 13.5%, respectively. The result of this study showed that Italian ryegrass, Tall fescue mixture and Tall fescue had good growth characteristics and forage productivity at paddy field in southern region of Korea.

  • This study was to assess the effects of sowing mixed legume forage and applying fermented cattle manure on the productivity and feed value of whole crop wheat (WCW) as a representative of winter crops and also to estimate feeding capacity of Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) per unit area by defining optimal application levels of cattle manure for more fertile soil and manure recycling for the purpose of reduced environmental pollution and efficient production of organic forage contributable to production of organic animal products. Sowing mixed legume forage significantly (p<0.05) increased yields of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) for WCW compared to WCW alone sowing, but there were no differences between mixed sowing treatments. The yields of DM, CP and TDN were significantly (p<0.05) higher in 100~150 kg N/ha. The CP and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents were highest in mixed sowing with hairy vetch, followed by sowing mixed forage pea and WCW alone (p<0.05). There were no differences in CP among cattle manure application levels. As nitrogen application level increased, ADF content increased (p<0.05), but TDN content decreased (p<0.05). Feeding capacity of organic Hanwoo (head/ha) weighing 450 kg of body weight with 400 g of daily gain significantly (p<0.05) increased due to mixed sowing with legume forage, and with increasing application levels of fermented cattle manure, feeding capacity significantly (p<0.05) increased. The results indicated that mixed-sowing of WCW and legume forage not only reduced nitrogen application level of fermented cattle manure by over 50 kg per ha but also increased their feed value and productivity, and feeding capacity. This would be contributable to diversity of forage resources as well as production of organic animal product by creating low cost and high quality of forage.
