  • The purpose of this study was to examine the anti-metastatic effect of Juniperus chinensis extract by inhibition of galectin-3 expression. For this study, we carried out the experiment of galectin-3 expression assay and in vivo metastasis mouse model bearing colon 26-M3.1 lung carcinoma, and also MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9 inhibitory assays relating metastasis mechanism. J. chinensis extract significantly showed the inhibitory effect of basal expression and MNNG-induced expression of galectin-3 in colon 26-M3.1 lung carcinoma at the all tested doses (5, 50 and $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). In case of the inhibition of MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-9, the weak activity was showed at the doses of 50 and $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and was not detected at the dose of $5{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. However, J. chinensis extract significantly showed the anti-metastatic activity on mouse mode bearing colon 26-M3.1 lung carcinoma. Therefore, this study strongly suggests that J. chinensis is a potent inhibitor of galectin-3 expression, and holds great promise for use in inhibiting metastasis induced by elevated expression of galectin-3.

  • Teliospores of two species of Gymnosporangium asiaticum and G.yamadae collected and identified from Juniperus chinensis, J.chinensis L.var.kaizuka. G.asiaticum was identified as the thick membraned (cell-walled) teliospores (avr 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and thin membraned teliospores (avr 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the telia of G.asiaticum was bluntly conical shaped and occured on the leaves and branches of Chinese junipers. G.yamadae was identified as the thick membraned (cell-walled) teliospores (avr 2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and thin membraned teliospores (avr 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), and the telia of G. yamadae was gall or floral shaped and occured on the leaves and branches of Chinese junipers. Both of the telia of the two species of Gymnosporangium were occurred in a same tree of Juniperus chinensis L. var. kaizuka at the same time. But the dominant species is G. asiaticum. The more rainfall in the late of April (the season of forming basidiospore), the more rust diseases in Chaenomeles sinensis. C. sinensis, and Pyrus pyrifolia var. culta were infected by G. asiaticum (basidiospores) but Malus siebodii was not infected by G.asiaticum.

  • We studied anti-microbial and anti-oxidant activities of bio-active components in stem of Juniperus chinensis L. and leaf of Abies koreana Wilson. Those plants of needle leaf tree family were reported to contain anti-cancer compounds. The anti-bacterial activity was tested by Broth dilution method against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. As results, Juniperus chinensis L. and Abies koreana Wilson extracts showed 17.0% and 8.5% higher anti-bacterial activity than methyl paraben, respectively. The free radical scavenging activity of Juniperus chinensis L. and Abies koreana Wilson extracts showed 45 % and 44 % at 5,000 ppm. We measured polyphenol (catechin equivalent) and flavonoids quantity. The Juniperus chinensis L. extract contained 312 mg/g of polyphenol and 105 mg/g of flavonoids. The Abies koreana Wilson extract contained 280 mg/g of polyphenol and 103.8 mg/g of flavonoids. The cytotoxicity of extracts was measured by neutral red assay. Extracts did not affect the viability of CCK-986sk cells up to a concentration of 1,250 ppm. In conclusion, these data suggest that extracts of needle leaf trees would be usefull as antiseptic agents and anti-oxidants for cosmetic products.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the bionomics, host range and damage aspect of Japanese juniperus bark borer, Semanotus bifasciatus M., which shoves the severe damage for the Juniperace in Chonnam province, recently. Host plants were Juniperus virginiana, J. chinensis var. kaizuka, J. chinensis, Biata orientalis var. nepalensis, Chamaccyparis ostus and Thujopsis dolabrata. Out of those, J. chinensis var. kaizuka is newly investigated in this study. Damage rate in each area was $16.5\%$ in Kwangju, $4.25\%$ in Damyang ana $6.5\%$ in Hwasoon. Adults appear once a year, with a peak at late March to early April. Adults emergence during the day showed the peak at 13 to 15 hours and were influenced in the maximum temperature in a day. Attack direction of larva after invasion in the stem was $62\%$ toward base, $22\%$ toward tip and $16\%$ toward horizon, and the damage in each DBH (Diameter of breast height) was the greatest at $30\~40mm$. At period of each stage, egg was $15.8\~19.7$ days, larva was $l12\~126$ days and pupa was $15\~21$ days. Longevity of adult was 19 days for female and 16 days for male.

  • The development of treatment technologies for recycling waste woods generated from tree pruning is required in Gangwon province forest. In this study, according to adsorption experiments using three types (Larix kaemoferi, Juniperus chinensis, Pinus densiflora) of waste woods, Juniperus chinensis as a biosorbent showing an excellent removal ability was selected for the removal of methylene blue in an aqueous phase. When 0.4 g/100 mL of Juniperus chinensis was used to improve the removal efficiency of methylene blue for 4 h, each 100, 200 and 300 mg/L of methylene blue dissolved in the aqueous phase were removed to 98, 93, and 81%, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium data obtained by changing adsorbent concentrations was found to be more consistent with the Langmuir than the Freundlich equation. In addition, based on dynamic experiments by changing the methylene blue concentration, the biosorption kinetics equation was more suitable for a pseudo-second order model. In order to enhance the removal capability of highly concentrated methylene blue, 300 and 400 mg/L of methylene blue were operated for 4 h under 210 rpm of agitation velocity and removal efficiencies were 92 and 76%, respectively. Consequently, these experimental results can be effectively utilized as a new biosorption technology for economically treating methylene blue dissolved in an aqueous phase.

  • From the forest areas in Chungbuk, large amounts of wood wastes by pruning are generated, however most of them considered as by-products are not treated properly with no disposal options. In this work, among diverse wood wastes such as Quercus variabillis, Juniperus chinensis, Larix kaemoferi, and Pinus densiflora, Juniperus chinensis was found to be more effective biosorbent for the removal of lead ions than other wood wastes. Also, the enhancement of lead removal efficiency from the aqueous phase was investigated using Juniperus chinensis waste. It was observed that the optimal initial pH to increase the removal efficiency of 20 mg/L lead ions was 4.0 and the optimal dosage concentration with regard to the biosorbent for the enhanced removal of 50 mg/L lead ions was 0.6 g/100 mL. In addition, chemical treatment of Juniperus chinensis waste with sulfuric acid was required to improve the adsorption capacity for high lead concentrations (over 100 mg/L). When Juniperus chinensis waste was chemically treated with 6 M sulfuric acid, the adsorption quantities of lead ions were 180, 340, and 425 mg/g with regard to 200, 400, and 500 mg/L lead ions concentrations, respectively. These results indicate that the practical biosorbent technology developed in this study is a highly efficient method to treat the lead ion from an aqueous solution.
