  • The relationships among long-term climate variation at the southern part of the Korean peninsula, oceanic conditions in the South Sea, Korea, and variation in the winter catch of yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata) were analyzed using 32 years of time-series data from 1971~2002. In the early 1990s, winter climatic conditions at the southern part of Korean peninsula shifted from a cool to a warm regime with higher air temperature, relative weak wind speed, and lower relative humidity. Also, the winter water temperature at 50 m depth became consistently higher in the South Sea. The annual winter catch of yellowtail in the South Sea increased dramatically in the early 1990s, as did that of anchovy, which is the major food organism for yellowtail. From the results of correlation analysis, we found that the winter catch of yellowtail was more closely related to the increasing of air temperature, water temperature and anchovy catch.

  • The possible effects of several environmental conditions on the catches of anchovy with a set net located in the water off Samchunpo were observed during the period of June 1∼Sep. 30, 1975. The best catches of anchovy were made when the surface water temperature was 24∼25$^{\circ}C$. If the surface temperature were below 18$^{\circ}C$ or above 26$^{\circ}C$, the catches were significantly smaller. The best catches were observed when the salinity was 28∼30 . If the salinities were below 25 or above 33 , the catches were considerably smaller. Increases in the catches were noticed as the transparency of the water decreased for certain range, and the best catches were made when the transparency was 2.0∼2.4m. The catches of anchovy were appeared to be related to the passage of cyclones, and significantly increased catches were observed 2 days after the passage of a cyclone. Significantly increased catches were also made when the atmospheric pressure was higher than 1,015mb under the influence of a tropical maritime air mass. the catches were found to be related to the tidal differences, and the average catch per day during the spring tide was 47 times as much as that of the neap tide.

  • To illustrate the variation of oceanic condition around artificial upwelling structure which is located in the South Sea of Korea, cm observations were carried out on December, 2005, April, August and October, 2006. Temperature, salinity and density(sigma-t) was nearly homogeneous through the whole depth by mixing of the seawater in winter. Stratification was not clear in spring, and it was only formed weakly in the surface layer shallower than 10m. Stratification was formed about $10{\sim}20$ m depth in summer and about $30{\sim}40$ m depth in autumn. Vertical gradient of temperature was larger than that in the part of western area along the artificial seamount in summer and autumn. The variation of stratification was also occurred around near the artificial structure area after set up structure.

  • Two hydrographic surveys along with direct current measurements using drogues and moored current meters were conducted in Cheju Strait during April and May, 1983. The data clearly demonstrate that a branch of the Kuroshio characterized by high temperature and high salinity enters the Cheju Strait after turning around the western coast of Cheju-Do. The width of the current turning west of Cheju-Do is about 60 km and reduces to 20∼30 km in the strait, resulting in a high speed(>10 cm/s) at the western entrance and in the middle of the strait, compared with a low speed (>5 cm/s) west of Cheju-Do. The Tsushima Current water also originating from the Kuroshio shows its influence in the eastern part of the Cheju Strait. Thermohaline fronts formed between the warm current waters and the coastal waters suggest the southward extension of the Yellow Sea Coastal Water west of the Cheju Strait. A warming of the warm current waters occurs in May, while a cooling takes place in other areas. The major freshening and cooling of water take place in the middle of the Cheju Strait in May due to the intrusion of cold and low salinity water from the west of the Cheju Strait.

  • Periodic characters of water temperature in the regions of the Mishima and the Okinoshima were derived through the analysis of the five days interval data during 1914 to 1970 mainly. In terms of ten days mean temperatures, annual variation function of the Mishima region, Korea Strait, is F($\theta_d$)=17.45-5.34 cos $\theta_d$-3.77 sin $\theta_d$+0.62 sin $2\theta_d$ -0.52 sin $3\theta_d$, where $\theta_d$=$\frac{\pi}{18}$(d-2), d is the order of ten days period 1 to 36. And in the region of Okinoshima, Tsushima Strait, we find F($\theta_d$)=18.88-5.39 cos $\theta_d$-3.60 sin $\theta_d$+0.52 sin $2\theta_d$. The annual mean temperature is 17.4$^{\circ}C$ in the Mishima region, 18.9$^{\circ}C$ in the Okinoshima region, and the amplitudes of annual variation functions are 7$^{\circ}C$ in both regions with minimum temperature in the middle ten days of February, maximum in the middle ten days of August. The long term variations of surface water temperature with 12 5 years period were observed in the annual mean temperature, monthly mean temperatures and the fixed day temperatures of every year. In addition to these, relatively short term variations were also found significant periods of 3 years, 4 years and 2 years, respectively.

  • To delineate water properties and current patterns in the spawning area of walleye pollock, hydrographic cast and current meter data collected in Strait, Gulf of alaska, were analysed, three water masses are identified in Shelikof Strait. A small amount of cold and dilute water ($<{\;}3^{\circ}C{\;}and{\;}<{\;}31.5\textperthousand$) originates from the lower Cook Inlet and flows southwestward close to the Alaska Peninsula coast. One branch of alaska coastal Current which enters the strait from the northeast comprises the main body of the upper and middle layers of the strait, and flows toward the southwest. Estimation of geostrophic baroclinic currents reveals that comparatively fast flow exists in the surface over the deepest portion of the strait, and most water exits through the southwestern entrance between Semidi and chirikof Is. On the other hand, a relatively slow-moving warm and saline ($>{\;}5^{circ}C{\;}and{\;}>{\;}32\textperthousand$) of the southwestern entrance flows northeasterly, and occupies the bottom layer in Shelikof Strait.

  • The oceanographical condition of the southeastern area off Korea is inverestigated in the point of view of the fluctuation of the thermal front. although the fearure of the front is somewhat complicate, it can be classified intl three types. the first type is elongated toward north with the narrow cold water belt inside the front. The second type is almost parallel with the latitude of 36 N and the third type is the irregular one in which the cyclonic cold water mass and the anticyclonic warm water mass develop equally. The north-south directed fronts are strengthened either by the supply of the warm Daema Current (Tsushima Current in Japanese) of by the appearance of the cold North Korean Water along the coast. In the first type the thermocline inclines up toward the coast when the southward component of the wind is weakened. On the other hand, in the second typr the homogeneous and medium warm water spreads up to the coast and the latitude of 36 N, the second type front is formed.
