The frequency and scale of natural disasters due to the abnormal climate phenomena caused by global warming have being increasing all over the world. Various natural disasters, such as typhoons, earthquakes, floods, heavy rain, drought, sweltering heat, wind waves, tsunamis and so on, can cause damage to human life. Especially, the damage caused by natural disasters such as the Earthquake of Japan, hurricane Katrina in the United States, typhoon Maemi and so on, have been enormous. At this stage, it is difficult to estimate the scale of damage due to (future) natural disasters and cope with them. However, if we could predict the scale of damage at the disaster response level, the damage could be reduced by responding to them promptly. In the present study, therefore, among the many types of natural disaster, we developed a function to estimate the damage due to wind waves caused by sea winds and waves. We collected the damage records from the Disaster Report ('91~'14) published by the Ministry of Public Safety and Security about wind waves and typhoons in the western coastal zone and, in order to reflect the inflation rate, we converted the amount of damage each year into the equivalent amount in 2014. Finally, the meteorological data, such as the wave height, wind speed, tide level, wave direction, wave period and so on, were collected from the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) and KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency)'s web sites, for the periods when wind wave and typhoon damage occurred. After that, the function used to estimate the wind wave damage was developed by reflecting the regional characteristics for the 9 areas of the western coastal zone.

Ozone sensitivity analysis with respect to $NO_x$ is conducted around the south-eastern area of the Korean Peninsula. WRF-CMAQ modeling system is used to simulate a local circulation and high ozone episode day. To analyze the sensitivity, the adjoint model for CMAQ is adopted in this study. The purpose of current study is to investigate the location that affects a day time ozone concentration of these receptors on the high ozone episode day. Adjoint sensitivity analysis for Daegu shows two areas of influence. One is the range from the neighboring location to Pohang and it affects mainly on the same day as receptor time. The other is the remote south-eastern area from Daegu. This remote influence area suggests that $NO_x$ emitted on the previous day can change the ozone concentration at receptor time. The influence area for Busan, on the other hand, is originated only from the emission on the previous day because the sea-breeze occurred on the episode day makes low influence of surrounding emission. The cross sectional analysis reveals that $NO_x$ advection is important not only near the surface of land but also around the height of boundary layer.
Airborne chlorides are transported to inland by sea wind to be attached to seashore concrete structure surface then penetrated into concrete structure members. Since the surface attached chloride amount are dependent on the amount of airborne chlorides, the prediction of distribution of airborne chlorides is important information in preventing chloride corrosion problems in seashore concrete structures. The prediction of surface chloride amount from airborne chlorides environment is extremely difficult than concrete directly in contact with seawater. In addition, their penetrating tendency is different from that of concrete immersed in seawater. In this study, properties of surface and penetrated chlorides under airborne chlorides environment are investigated. Concrete specimens were manufactured and exposed to marine environment for 3 years. The specimens were analyzed at the time durations of 1, 2, and 3 years to check surface chloride amount to penetrated chloride depth. The results revealed that there were certain differences according to surface roughness of concrete and with and without washing effect due to rainfalls. The evaluation results showed that penetrated chlorides depend on amount of airborne chlorides and duration of exposure. In addition, a notable tendency of having deeper chloride penetration and higher chloride content in concrete members under long-term exposure was observed.
The present paper suggests the original form of the bell pavilion for the King Song-Dok bell which is one of the precious national treasure of Korea. In order to this, many literatures were reviewed including both historical and acoustical references. As the results, the model of the bell pavilion for the King Song-Dok bell is suggested as follows considering acoustical characteristics of the King Song-Dok bell and the traditional Korean bells ; 1) The bell pavilion has the rumbling puddle beneath the bell on the ground floor for resonance of sound 2) Many lumbers are used for columns and beams rather than boards since natural frequencies of the bell are 64 Hz and 168 Hz so that the sound absorption of the low frequency sound may not be occurred. 3) Only some boards may be used for the area between upper and middle molding of lintel in order to prevent of direct sunlight and sea breeze since this type of structure were used for bell pavilion of the same age. 4) Square form with the odd number of 3 or 5 Kans is adopted for bell pavilion considering the weight and the size of the bell which had been used traditionally 5) Finally, half-hipped structure is used for the roof of the bell pavilion which was the predominant form of the age.

Unlike the concrete structure built on land, that exposed to the marine environment is greatly degraded in durability due to the exposure to not only the physical action caused by sea wind, tide, and wave, but also the harsh conditions, including the chemical erosion and freeze-thaw which result from $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $Cl^-$ and $Mg^{2+}$ ions in seawater. In the process of the large scaled construction of submerged concrete structures, of course environmental hazardous substance, such as alkaline (pH) and heavy metals, may be leached. Thus, this issue needs to be adequately reviewed and studied. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a CSA (Calcium Sulfo Aluminate) activator using electric arc furnace reducing slags, as well as the eco-friendly concrete for artificial reefs using electric arc furnace oxidizing slag as aggregate for concrete. The strength properties of the eco-friendly concrete exposed to the marine environment were lower than those of the normal concrete by curing 28 days. This suggest that additional studies are needed to improve the early strength of the eco-friendly concrete. With respect to seawater resistance of the eco-friendly concrete, the average strength loss against 1 year of curing days reached 8-9%. the eco-friendly concrete using high volume of ground granulated blast furnace slags and high specific gravity of electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag demonstrated the sufficient usability as a freeze-thaw resistant material. With respect to heavy metal leaching properties of the eco-friendly concrete, heavy metal substances were immobilized by chemical bonding in the curing process through the hydration of concrete. Thus, heavy metal substances were neither identified at or below environmental hazard criteria nor detected, suggesting that the eco-friendly concrete is safe in terms of leaching of hazardous substances.
The objectives of this study were to analyze environment in the forest and growth characteristics for investigating the characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast. As a result of analyzing inhibitory factors of Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast, it is considered that the salt level included in a sea wind is supposed to be the primary factor of the slow growth for Robinia pseudoacacia since brown leaves, wilting and early leaf fall have appeared in the 0m spot from the artificial dune which has the high salt level. However, the soil properties and light environment hardly have a effect on the growth of Robinia pseudoacacia because there is no difference among planting places. Also, the growth ring of the horizontal root in 2year individuals 0.1~0.2m away from the dune have been formed for 1 year only as a consequence of analyzing growth rings of Robinia pseudoacacia growing on the coast. It can be infered that the nourishment of the horizontal root from individuals growing on the coast have been provided for the first 1 year only. It is estimated that, in case of the nearby areas on the coast, it is not enough to provided nourishment to the horizontal root due to obstructing the growth of new individuals by a sea wind, so the growth of the horizontal root would be hampered. Therefore, it is considered that impedient Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast is caused by making no growth of new horizontal roots and newborn individuals.

A 90-m horizontal-resolution numerical model was configured to study the micrometeorological features of local winds in the valley of Gwangneung KoFlux (Korea Flux network) Sites (GDK: Gwangneung Deciduous forest site in Korea, GCK: Gwangneung Coniferous forest site in Korea) during summer days. The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data were employed for high-resolution model terrain height. Model performance was evaluated by comparing observed and simulated near-surface temperature and winds. Detailed qualitative analysis of the model-simulated wind field was carried out for two selected cases which are a clear day (Case I) and a cloudy day (Case II). Observed winds exhibited that GDK and GCK, as well as Case I and Case II, had differences in timing, duration and strength of daytime and nighttime wind direction and speeds. The model simulation results strongly supported the existence of the drainage flow in the valley of the KoFlux tower sites. Overall, the simulated model fields realistically presented the diurnal cycle of local winds in and around the valley, including the morning drainage-upslope transition and the evening reversal of upslope wind. Also, they indicated the complexity of local winds interactions by presenting that daytime westerly winds in the valley were not always pure mountain winds and were often coupled with larger-scale wind systems, such as synoptic-scale winds or mesoscale sea breezes blowing from the west coast of the peninsula.
This study examined the spatial distribution of precipitation in Sokcho area. The hourly, daily and monthly precipitation on the 2 stations, 5 AWS in Sokcho area were analyzed by daily, monthly, altitudinal distribution and synoptic environment. The results of the Study are as follows. The amount of Yearly precipitation, 1970~1999 in Sokcho area is gradually increasing. The amount of monthly precipitation 1970~1999 at Sorak weather observation station (altitude 148m), Compared with that in 7 Stations is greatest in spring, Summer and autumn. Because the valleys near Ssangcheon river are funnels for sea wind into Sorak weather observation station. The amount of Summerly precipitation at Mishiryong(1993~1999), the highest altitude in 7 weather observations stations is more 95.2mm than that of Sokcho airport, the lowest altitude, but the amount of winterly precipitation at Sokcho airport is more 89.6mm than that of Mishiryong. When the heavy rainfall and the heavy Snowfall occured in Sokcho area, wind systems were mainly a sea wind (north-north-eastly wind, north-westly wind) and daily mean wind speed was respectively 4.4㎧, 3.6㎧. The amount of the heavy rainfall and heavy snow fall in Sokcho area is closely associated with the north-eastly stream at the lower and the upper level toward the coast of East sea(Sokcho area).

Eupatilin, one of representative medical components of mugwort, can be efficiently extracted from the 'Gangwha Sajabalssuk'. The Eupatilin content may depend on environmental factors such as soil and regional climate in addition to a genetic factor and Gangwha region has a profitable environmental condition for the mugwort growth. In this study, the climatological characteristics of Gangwha was analyzed in order to find the environmental condition of mugwort containing high Eupatilin in term of atmospheric, oceanographic and land variables. The climate of Gangwha is characterized by the relatively low daily temperature and large diurnal variation with plenty of solar radiation, long sunshine duration and less cloudiness. According to our correlation analysis, the long sunshine duration and the large diurnal temperature variation are highly correlated with the Eupatilin contents. The result implies that Gangwha has the favorable conditions for the cultivation and the habitat of the high-Eupatilin concentrated mugwort. Because of the sea surrounding Gangwha Island with low salinity and moderate wind, the salt contained in sea breeze is relatively low compared to other regions. Furthermore, Gangwha has clean atmospheric environment compared to other regions because the concentrations of toxic gases harmful to crop growth such as nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$), sulfite gas ($SO_2$) and fine dust (PM-10) are lower in the air. The ozone ($O_3$) concentration is moderate and within the level of natural production. It is also found that moderately coarse texture or fine loamy soils known as good for water drainage and for the growth and cultivation of the 'Gangwha-mugwort' are distributed throughout the areas around mountainous districts in Gangwha, coinciding with those of mugwort habitat.

This study was carried out to evaluate quality properties of gamma-irradiated Kwamegi prepared from Cololabis seira semi-dried by cold sea wind. Edible portion of Kwamegi was prepared from whole body, vacuum-packaged, gamma-irradiated in the doses of 3 or 5 kGy, and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 60 days. Volatile basic nitrogen and trimethylamine contents were not different by gamma irradiation. During storage increase of those two compounds were inhibited depending upon the dose. Thiobarbituric acid values did not differ in all samples, regardless of irradiation and storage. The amount of total volatile compounds of Kwamegi decreased by irradiation. Rheological properties were not affected by irradiation and were maintained up to 60 day when the Kwamegi was irradiated at 5 kGy dose, but those of control was softened. Sensory evaluation had no differences in all samples immediately after irradiation. Sensory quality of Kwamegi irradiated were organoleptically adequate, however that of control was deteriorated. In conclusion, these results indicate that gamma irradiation technique can be used to maintain the quality of Kwamegi.
