Characteristics of a Turbidite Sediment from the Southern Margin of the Okinawa Trough, Japan (오끼나와해곡 남쪽해역의 저탁류 퇴적물의 특성)

  • A turbidite core sediment (RN88-PC5) from 2051 m on the deep-sea floor at the southern margin of Okinawa Trough was examined. Sedimentological characteristics were quite different between sandy sediments and hemipelagic sediments and hemipelagic sediments in terms of benthic foraminiferal assemblage, grain-size and chemical composition. All turbidite sandy sediments were clearly transported from shallow area as they include typical coral reef dwelling benthic foraminifera which were not found in the background hemipelagic sediments. These layers also suggest that the sediments were transported by turbidity-related currents and implies that sedimentological mechanisms were different between sandy sediments and hemipelagic sediments. The result of the /SUP 14/ C age dating and the stable oxygen isotopic fluctuation of planktonic foraminifera show a gradual warming trend of the surface water from about 10 Ka to present. Also Termination lb as well as two fresh water input events were recognized at ca2 and 7 ka.

Mixing of Sea Waters in the Northern Part of the East China Sea in Summer (하계 동중국해 북부 해역에서의 해수 혼합)

  • In order to investigate the mixing of sea waters on the continental shelf in the northern East China Sea, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute conducted hydrographic surveys including turbulence measurements using the R/V Eardo in August 2005 and August 2006. The turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates based on velocity shear measurements are estimated to be $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{4}$, $10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-6}$, and $10^{-7}$ W/kg in the surface layer, bottom layer, and lower thermocline, respectively. The data sets suggest that surface layer water is being constantly mixed by winds. High dissipation rate in the lower thermocline seems to be caused by internal waves. The bottom layer with high dissipation rate also shows high turbidity, indicating the effect of tidal stirring turbulence. The vertical eddy diffusivities are $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-2}m^2/s$ near the bottom, and these high values appear to arise from both the low stability and high turbulent mixing.

  • The Korean Peninsula is located between the tectonically stable Asian Continent and the tectonically active Japanese islands. The east coast of Korea shows evidence of uplift whereas the west coast shows evidence of submergence. However, radiocarbon dates indicate that the rate of submergence of the west coast of Korea is slower than the tectonically stable east coast of North America. Therefore, both east and west coasts of Korea might have been uplifted during the last post-glacial period. This uplift may result the spreading line of the from compressional strain produced along East Sea of Korea (Japan Sea) and/or the conversion hinge line of the Pacific mantle convection current plunging beneath the Asian continent. This downturn is supposed to be located in the Japan Trench. High heat flow near the east coast of Korea produces the differential strain. This strain accelerates the compressional strain of the peninsula. The Sea Floor Spreading Theory can explain the tectonism of the Korean Peninsula in Recent time. Baek-Doo Mt. and Han-Ra Mt., dormant volcanoes, may be an evidence of westward movement of the Korean Peninsula.

  • The shallow sediments in the southwestern Ulleung Basin consist of mass flow deposits such as slide/slump and debris flow deposits (DFD), caused by slope failure. These sediments are proven to be important in studying geological disaster and stability of the seafloor. In this paper, we analysised the flow accumulation and slope failure susceptibility of the Ulleung Basin on the basis of multi-beam data, collected in this area. We also studied the distribution pattern and the seismic characteristics of the DFD in the uppermost layer of the Ulleung Basin on the basis of seismic data. The slope susceptibility was calculated as the frequency ratio of each factors including slope, aspect, curvature and stream power index (SPI), which causes the slope failure. These results indicate that the slope failure is frequently to occur in the southern and western continental slope of the Ulleung Basin. The sediment flow (mass flow) caused by the slope failure converges to the north and northwest of the Ulleung Basin. According to the seismic characteristics, the uppermost layer in study area can be divided into four sedimentary unit. These sedimentary units develop from the south and southwest to the north and northwest in association with slope susceptibility and flow accumulation.

Pore flow Characteristics in Seabed around Dike Due to Variation of Ground Water Level (지하수위 변화에 따른 호안 주변 지반내의 흐름특성)

  • Recently, an artificial beach has been constructed compensating for loss of the natural one caused by the development of coastal area, as well as serving as a location for recreational activities such as sea bathing. It is well known that some structure should be constructed to protect an artificial beach from the outflow due to wave action of the reclaimed sand. In general, dike is utilized as the structure to protect an artificial beach. And, one of the factors which may need to be taken into consideration for stability of dike on seabed foundation is the ground water behavior behind dike. However, the interrelated phenomena of nonlinear wave and ground water response have relatively little attention although these interactions are important for stability of structure and sand suction to the artificial beach. In this paper, the numerical wave tank was developed to clarify nonlinear wave, dike and ground water dynamic interaction, which can simulate the difference of ground water and mean water level. Using the developed numerical wave tank, the present study investigates how variation of ground water level influences hydrodynamic characteristics in seabed around dike and numerically simulates the wave fields, pore flow patterns, pore water pressures and vorticities according to variation of ground water level. Numerical results explain well how hydrodynamic characteristics in seabed around dike is affected by the variation of ground water level.

  • Most immersed tunnels investigated have been investigated based on the engineer's experience with design and construction. From engineering point of view, it is very important to understand the wave interaction with the seabed and immersed tunnel, since the stability of an immersed tunnel depends largely on the behavior of the seabed foundation. In this study, for the first stage research to find out the mechanism of the wave interaction with the seabed and immersed tunnel, the benchmarking method called as direct numerical simulation (DNS) was employed to analyze comprehensively the wave-induced pore water pressures, vorticity and flows in seabed or inside rubble stone around the immersed tunnel. The immersed tunnel is modeled based on Busan-Geoje fixed link project in Korea, which is now on the stage of planning. Moreover, the nonlinear water wave interaction with an immersed tunnel/its seabed foundation was thoroughly examined with regard to the stabilities of the immersed tunnel subjected to various water wave conditions, median grain size and so forth.

  • Power cable tunnels is one of the underground structures meant for electricity transmission and are constructed using shield TBM method when transitting across urban and subsea regions. With the increasing shaft depth for tunnels excavation when the shield TBM excavated the rock mass, the review of selecting closed-type shield TBM in rocks becomes necessary. A simplified shield TBM design method is also necessary based on conventional geotechnical survey results. In this respect, design method and related design program are developed based on combined results of full-scale tests, considerable amount of accumulated TBM data, and numerical simulation results. In order to validate the program results, excavation data of a completed power cable tunnel project are utilized. Thrust force, torque, and power of shield TBM specification are validated using Kernel density concept which estimates the population data. The robustness of design expertise is established through this research which will help in stable provision of electricity supply.

  • Sunken ships cause damage to the environment due to the dispersal of fuel oil and harmful cargo goods in the hull. Since the sunken ship is mostly flooded by the seabed, it tends to be in a relatively stable condition. However, the heavy body, together with the load of remaining goods in the cargo hold, the constant contact with the seabed, and ocean currents and tidal waves, can affect dispersal of residual fuel oils out of the sunken ship. Corrosion of the sunken ship starts upon sinking, decreasing the thickness of the hull structure and sub-materials. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the structural stability against the potential breakdown of the sunken ship. Whilst evaluating the danger of the sunken ship, this result should be reflected in 'the possible discharge'. This study was undertaken to suggest a procedure for a step by step evaluation to assess the structural stability a sunken ship. The structural stability assessment to estimate the collapsibility of the hull was structure targeted at the sunken ship 'No. 7 HaeSung', which was classified as the prime example for the intensive management of sunken ships. The collapsibility of the hull structure was estimated Based on the damage size of the hull structure, and the corrosion rate of the hull structure and sub-materials due to the seawater after sinking. It was confirmed that there was a low possibility of the total destruction of the hull structure at the current time. However, there is a high possibility in the potential failure of the hull structure due to increased rate of corrosion thereafter. Therefore, we believe continuous study on influence of corrosion and marine environment change to sunken ship's structural safety is necessary.

The Latest Progress on the Development of Technologies for $CO_2$ Storage in Marine Geological Structure and its Application in Republic of Korea (해저 지질구조내 $CO_2$ 저장기술의 연구개발 동향 및 향후 국내 실용화 방안)

  • To mitigate the climate change and global warming, various technologies have been internationally proposed for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Especially, in recent, carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology is regarded as one of the most promising emission reduction options that $CO_2$ be captured from major point sources (eg., power plant) and transported for storage into the marine geological structure such as deep sea saline aquifer. The purpose of this paper is to review the latest progress on the development of technologies for $CO_2$ storage in marine geological structure and its perspective in republic of Korea. To develop the technologies for $CO_2$ storage in marine geological structure, we carried out relevant R&D project, which cover the initial survey of potentially suitable marine geological structure fur $CO_2$ storage site and monitoring of the stored $CO_2$ behavior, basic design for $CO_2$ transport and storage process including onshore/offshore plant and assessment of potential environmental risk related to $CO_2$ storage in geological structure in republic of Korea. By using the results of the present researches, we can contribute to understanding not only how commercial scale (about 1 $MtCO_2$) deployment of $CO_2$ storage in the marine geological structure of East Sea, Korea, is realized but also how more reliable and safe CCS is achieved. The present study also suggests that it is possible to reduce environmental cost (about 2 trillion Won per year) with developed technology for $CO_2$ storage in marine geological structure until 2050.

Analysis of Crustal Deformation on the Korea Peninsula after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake (한반도 지각의 2011 도호쿠 대지진 영향 분석)

  • The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced that an earthquake of 9.0 magnitude had occurred near the east coast of Japan on March 11, 2011, resulting in a displacement of the crust of about 2.4 meters. The Korean peninsula is located on the Eurasian tectonic plate that stretches out to Japan; therefore, there is a high possibility of being affected by an earthquake. The Korean GPS CORS network operated by the National Geographic Information Institute (NGII) was processed for ten days before and after the earthquake. Both static and kinematic baseline processing were tested for the determination of crustal deformation. The static baseline processing was performed in two scenarios: 1) fixing three IGS stations in China, Mongolia and Russia; 2) fixing SUWN, one of the CORS networks in Korea, in order to effectively verify crustal deformation. All data processing was carried out using Bernese V5.0. The test results show that most of the parts of the Korean peninsula have moved to the east, ranging 1.2 to 5.6 cm, compared to the final solution of the day before the earthquake. The stations, such as DOKD and ULLE that are established on the islands closer to the epicenter, have clearly moved the largest amounts. Furthermore, the station CHJU, located on the southwestern part of Korea, presents relatively small changes. The relative positioning between CORS confirms the fact that there were internal distortions of the Korean peninsula to some extent. In addition, the 30-second interval kinematic processing of CORS data gives an indication of earthquake signals with some delays depending on the distance from the epicenter.
