  • Digital technology has been applied to marine seismic survey to develop data processing technology and multi-channel marine seismic survey. In result, high-resolution marine seismic survey ended in a success. Surveys are conducted for various purposes using various frequencies of acoustic sources. A low frequency source is used for deeper penetration and a high frequency source is used for higher resolution survey. In this study, a multi-source system was used for multi-channel marine seismic survey to acquire seismic sections of both low and high frequencies. Variations of depth of penetration and resolution would be used to achieve more accurate analysis of formations. In this study, the multi-source system consists of Bubble Pulser (400 Hz) for low frequency source and Sparker (1.5kHz) for high frequency source.

  • A PC-based 8-channel seismic system has been developed and applied for bedrock mapping in near shore environment. The system is composed of an analog signal processor and an A/D converter installed on the computer, and a streamer with the group interval of 5 meters. The system is accomplished with a data acquisition program which controls the system and a data processing software. With the PC-based shallow marine seismic survey system high-resolution 2-D marine seismic profiles which have high S/N ratios can be obtained after appropriate data processing.

  • Horizontal-axes on the seismic section have been represented in a distance unit by applying horizontal-distance correction transformation on a 2-D seismic section of single channel marine seismic data. By drawing horizontal-axes in a distance unit, distortion of horizontal distances shown on the seismic section when the ship speed varies during a survey can be diminished considerably. Position information obtained by GPS and stored in each trace of seismic data as well as data collection windows were used for horizontal distance correction. The minimum window length was decided by considering ship speed and shot interval, and the maximum window length wat determined by reflecting radius of the 1st Fresnel zone. In choosing an optimum window length, horizontal resolution and stacking effect were considered simultaneously. By applying horizontal distance correction we could get a 2-D seismic section which is considered at reflecting the real subsurface structure analogously.

  • Recently, many countries in the world try to develop alternative energy sources, however, traditional hydrocarbon resources are still occupying most of the energy resources. Exploration demands for high technologies are increasing in the development of limited oil & gas resources field owing to the exhaustion of hydrocarbon resources for access area. Therefore, an effort for the development and the application of new technologies such as azimuth seismic survey, ocean-bottom seismic survey and marine controlled-source electromagnetic survey is necessary as well as an understanding of the existing technologies such as 2D/3D seismic survey. This dissertation is designed with the purpose of introducing marine hydrocarbon exploration technologies and analyzing their internalexternal researches, development and science information. In this study, we analised total 616 dissertations for the marine petroleum exploration released in the Sci-expanded DB of 'web of science' during the 2001~2014 periods.

  • In this study, we have developed the high resolution multichannel seismic data acquisition system and shallow marine seismic source. It is easy to operate and handle our source system which utilizes piezoelectric transducer of high electrical power. We have manufactured two 4-channel streamers for multi-channel marine seismic survey. In the recording part, we used 24bits and 8 channel high speed A/D board. Therefore, we could achieve the improvement of data quality and the efficiency of data acquisition. We compared the developed system with the conventional system to demonstrate its field applicability.

  • Single-channel seismic exploration has proven effective in delineating subsurface geological structures using small-scale survey systems. The seismic data acquired through zero- or near-offset methods directly capture subsurface features along the vertical axis, facilitating the construction of corresponding seismic sections. However, substantial noise in single-channel seismic data hampers precise interpretation because of the low signal-to-noise ratio. This study introduces a novel approach that integrate noise reduction and signal enhancement via matrix rank optimization to address this issue. Unlike conventional rank-reduction methods, which retain selected singular values to mitigate random noise, our method optimizes the entire singular value spectrum, thus effectively tackling both random and erratic noises commonly found in environments with low signal-to-noise ratio. Additionally, to enhance the horizontal continuity of seismic events and mitigate signal loss during noise reduction, we introduced an adaptive weighting factor computed from the eigenimage of the seismic section. To access the robustness of the proposed method, we conducted numerical experiments using single-channel Sparker seismic data from the Chukchi Plateau in the Arctic Ocean. The results demonstrated that the seismic sections had significantly improved signal-to-noise ratios and minimal signal loss. These advancements hold promise for enhancing single-channel and high-resolution seismic surveys and aiding in the identification of marine development and submarine geological hazards in domestic coastal areas.

  • Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), an increasingly growing acquisition technique in the oil and gas exploration and seismology fields, has been used to record seismic signals using optical cables as receivers. With the development of imaging methods for DAS data, full waveform inversion (FWI) is been applied to DAS data to obtain high-resolution property models such as P- and S-velocity. However, because the DAS systems measure strain from the phase distortion between two points along optical cables, DAS data must be transformed from strain to particle velocity for FWI algorithms. In this study, a plane-wave FWI algorithm based on the relationship between strain and horizontal particle velocity in the plane-wave assumption is proposed to apply FWI to DAS data. Under the plane-wave assumption, strain equals the horizontal particle velocity, which is scaled by the velocity at the receiver position. This relationship was confirmed using a numerical experiment. Furthermore, 4-layer and modified Marmousi-2 velocity models were used to verify the applicability of the proposed FWI algorithm in various survey environments. The proposed FWI was implemented in land and marine survey environments and provided high-resolution P- and S-velocity models.

  • We introduce OBS and sonobuoy systems which are the typical wide-angle reflection/refraction seismic recorders made by KORDI for the investigation of crustal structure and the sediment/basement structure in the coastal area. These recording devices are examined for their usage through the test survey. The normal operation of these devices were proved and good recordings were obatined. The head waves are recognized in the sonobuoy records, which shows the possibility of velocity structure survey by the refraction and/or tomography method.

  • For surveying shallow gas reservoirs in the Pohang basin, we proposed a seismic exploration method applicable to the transition zone in which land and marine areas are connected. We designed the seismic acquisition geometry considering both environments. We installed land nodal receivers on the ground and employed vibroseis and airgun sources in both land and marine areas. For seismic exploration in the transition zone, specific acquisition and processing techniques are required to ensure precise matching of reflectors at the boundary between the onshore and offshore regions. To enhance the continuity of reflection events on the seismic section, we performed amplitude and phase corrections with respect to the source types and applied a static correction. Following these processing steps, we obtained a seismic section showing connected reflectors around the boundary in the transition zone. We anticipate that our proposed seismic exploration method can also be used for fault detection in the transition zone.
