  • Along the shoreline a special treatment is required to simulate movement of periodic waves such as tsunami and tide because of continuous movement of shoreline as waves rise and recede. A moving boundary treatment is first proposed to track the movement of shoreline in this study. The treatment is then employed to obtain a maximum inundation area to be used for mitigation of coastal flooding. The obtained maximum inundation zone for a specific location is compared to that of available observed data. A reasonable agreement is observed.

  • Most of parabolic approximation models employ a relatively limited open boundary condition in which there is no depth variation in the longshore direction outside of the computation domain so that Snell's law may be presumed to hold. Existing Kirby's condition belongs to this category and in the paper both modified Kirby's method and Dirichlet boundary condition are presented in detail and numerical results of three methods were shown. Judging from computation to wave propagations over a circular shoal in a constant depth, the method based on present Dirichlet boundary condition with fictitious numerical adjusting regions in both sides of the computation domain gives the least distorted amplitude ratio distribution.

  • The physicochemical properties and quality changes in salted and dried brown croaker products using deep seawater salt were investigated for preparation with different pretreatment, salting and drying conditions. Optimum salt concentration, salting time and drying time for product were 20% of body weight, 12 hrs at room temperature ($25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$), and 24 hrs at $30{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, respectively. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), peroxide value (POV), viable cell count and acid value (AV) of viscera and blade removed products were 18.9~22.4 mg%, 21.0~32.5 meq/L, and 2.3~4.4 mg/mL, $2.0\sim3.5{\times}10^3$ CFU/g, respectively and only viscera removed products were 31.2~38.1 mg%, 40~55.2 meq/L, 7.0~11.5 mg/mL, $4.1\sim5.5{\times}10^3$ CFU/g, respectively. Changes in quality of salted and dried brown croaker products were investigated during storage at room temperature and $5{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. The POV, AV and viable cell counts of salted and dried brown croaker products increased in commercial salt used and only viscera removed products compared with deep seawater salt used and viscera and blade removed products during storage time. Results in this study showed that the deep seawater salt was very effective for quality control of salted and dried brown croaker products and pretreatment method was a very important factor for preparation products. The optimum conditions for preparation of salted and dried brown croaker product were 20% of body weight for salt concentration, 12 hrs at $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for salting time, and 24 hrs at $30{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for drying time. Optimum storage time for quality maintenance was 14 days at $5{\pm}2^{\circ}C$.

  • Numerical analysis was conducted to determine the effect of soil behavior by thawing and freezing of seasonal frozen soil on pile foundations. The analysis was performed using the finite element method (FEM) to simulate soil-pile interaction based on the atmosphere temperature change. Thermomechanical coupled modeling using FEM was applied with the temperature-dependent nonlinear properties of the frozen soil. The analysis model cases were applied to the MCR and HDP models to simulate the elastoplastic behavior of soil. The numerical analysis results were analyzed and compared with various conditions having different length and width sizes of the pile. The results of the numerical analysis showed t hat t he HDP model was relat ively passive, and t he aspect and magnit ude of t he bearing capacit y and displacement of the pile head were similar depending on the length and width of the pile conditions. The vertical displacement of the pile head by thawing and freezing of the ground showed a large variation in displacement for shorter length conditions. In the MCR model, the vertical displacement appeared in the maximum thaw settlement and frost heaving of 0.0387 and 0.0277 m, respectively. In the HDP model, the vertical displacement appeared in the maximum thaw settlement and frost heaving of 0.0367 and 0.0264 m, respectively. The results of the pile bearing capacity for the two elastoplastic models showed a larger difference in the width condition than the length condition of the pile, with a maximum of about 14.7% for the width L condition, a maximum of about 5.4% for M condition, and a maximum of about 5.3% for S condition. The significance of the effect on the displacement of the pile head and the bearing capacity depended on the pile-soil contact area, and the difference depended on the presence or absence of an active layer in the soil and its thickness.

  • We have evaluated the ammonium data in seawater as a potential short-term index for marine environment through the following steps. 1. reviewing of chemical characteristics of ammonium in seawater, 2. comparative relationships of ammonium data with other water quality indices such as DO, COD, and nutrients from Typical Marine Environment(TME) and Special Marine Environment(SME). Ammonium data generally represent negative correlation with DO, while positive correlation with COD. In particular, under frequent cases of seawater conditions showing similar concentration of COD or DO, we have limited choice of explanation for such situation. However ODIN(ODIN/RDIN) or RDIN(RDIN/TDIN) ratio could provide advanced information to understand these seawater conditions. Based on these results, we suggest ammonium data as a potential short-period index for transilient marine environment, such as benthic flux of bottom sediment, hypoxia, and algal bloom. Under overcoming several handicaps, ammonium data could be an useful tool for better understand short transformation of marine environment.

  • Previous studies cannot effectively explain the rise of piracy in Somalia and NIgeria. First, there is a lack of explanation for the process that from a small maritime robbery into a org anized pirate g roup. Second, it is difficult to explain the low level of piracy in countries with extreamly poor conditions, from Somalia to Nigeria. In this study, I argue that the more severe foreign countries infringe on economic maritime sovereignty in vulnerable countries, the higher the intensity and frequency of piracy. If the infringement of economic maritime sovereignty caused by foreign groups occurs in a fragile state, the government could not respond to the acts of foreign groups, resulting in increased damage to maritime people, deteriorating the regional economic situation. As hostility grows, a culture favorable to piracy is created, which is actively utilized by local forces to inspire the people's hostility, and a favorable environment for piracy emerges in a way that responds politically to foreign powers. In Somalia and Nigeria, the infringement of economic maritime sovereignty by foreign groups emerged severe. And based on the stagnation of the local economy and hostility toward foreign groups, favorable conditions were formed for piracy, resulting in the rise of piracy. Meanwhile, Somalia's neighbor, one of the most fragile states in the world, Yemen have not suffered piracy. Also, the foreign infringement to the maritime economic sovereignty has rarely been observed.

  • Recently, marine surveys using unmanned ships are attracting attention, and research on small unmanned ships using sails is on the rise. Sail drones can be used for marine surveys, monitoring, and pollution management. Therefore, in this study, using the method of estimating the ship speed for twin sail drones, the optimal conditions for sailing are checked, and the performance to be considered in the initial design stage, such as the motion performance and resistance of the sail drone. Consequently, the twin sail drone had a speed lower than 2.0 m/s, and the stability satisfied the rule by DNV. In addition, the maximum speed at an angle of attack of 20° at TWA 100° was 1.69 m/s and that at an angle of attack of 25° at TWA 100° was 1.74 m/s.

  • The two major objectives of acoustical measurements in a cavitation tunnel are measuring the noise levels generated by rotating propellers behind a hull and localizing possible noise sources in order to reduce noise levels. Propeller noise measurement experiments were performed in MOERI cavitation tunnel at December, 2006. In order to put the propeller into cavitating conditions, a wake-generating dummy body was devised. In addition, ten hydrophones are put inside a wing-shaped casing in order to minimize the unexpected flow induced self noise around hydrophone itself. After measuring both of the noises of the rotating propeller behind the dummy body and signals generated by a virtual source, respectively the data were matched field processed using the frequency incoherent Bartlett processor to localize noises on the propeller plane. In this paper, we presented the measured noise analysis and the localization results.
