  • This study aims to examine the the characteristics if the sea water circulation in related to the change of the water exchange rate according to the the development phases of Busan Port. To clarify the characteristics, the water exchange caused by construction if new-port and river discharge conditions was examined by the numerical experiments using the Lagrangian particle tracking model based on 2-D shallow water equation. This study deals with the charge of flow field and water exchange after redevelopment using numerical simulation technique, based on the field observation and 4 rivers discharge flow. As a result if numerical simulation, Variation if current velocity in Busan North Port is almost nothing before and after construction. Water exchange of channel in area of redevelopment is a little. Futhermore, the tidal exchange had a tendency to be small both before and after redevelopment by 60%.

  • For the assessment of seawater exchange rates in Danghangpo bay, Dangdong bay, Wonmun bay, Gohyunsung bay, and Masan bay, which are small-scale inner bays of Jinhae bay, an EFDC model was used to reproduce the seawater flow of the entire Jinhae bay, and Lagrange (particle tracking) and Euler (dye diffusion) model techniques were used to calculate the seawater exchange rates for each of the bays. The seawater exchange rate obtained using the particle tracking method was the highest, at 60.84%, in Danghangpo bay, and the lowest, at 30.50%, in Masan bay. The seawater exchange rate calculated based on the dye diffusion method was the highest, at 45.40%, in Danghangpo bay, and the lowest, at 34.65%, in Masan bay. The sweater exchange rate was found to be the highest in Danghangpo bay likely because of a high flow velocity owing to the narrow entrance of the bay; and in the case of particle tracking method, the morphological characteristics of the particles affected the results, since once the particles get out, it is difficult for them to get back in. Meanwhile, in the case of the Lagrange method, when the particles flow back in by the flood current after escaping the ebb current, they flow back in intact. However, when a dye flows back in after escaping the bay, it becomes diluted by the open sea water. Thus, the seawater exchange rate calculated based on the dye diffusion method turned out to be higher in general, and even if a comparison of the sweater exchange rates calculated through two methods was conducted under the same condition, the results were completely different. Thus, when assessing the seawater exchange rate, more reasonable results could be obtained by either combining the two methods or selecting a modeling technique after giving sufficiently consideration to the purpose of the study and the characteristics of the coastal area. Meanwhile, through a comparison of the degree of closure and seawater exchange rates calculated through Lagrange and Euler methods, it was found that the seawater exchange rate was higher for a higher degree of closure, regardless of the numerical model technique. Thus, it was deemed that the degree of closure would be inappropriate to be used as an index for the closeness of the bay, and some modifications as well as supplementary information would be necessary in this regard.

  • In the present paper, a method which enhances the circulation of harbor waters by using wave energy was investigated. The overflow levee was selected as a coastal structure helping the harbor circulation, and was applied to Jeju-outer-port site so as to estimate its effectiveness quantitatively in probabilistic point of view. It was assumed that sea water influx rate through the overflow levee into the harbor depended upon wave height and tidal level and a functional relationship among them was calculated using the results of hydraulic experiment. The probability distribution of water influx could be obtained from hindcasted wave data and measured tidal elevations at Jeju harbor. The Gamma distribution was appeared to best fit the estimated influx distribution, and the optimal location of the levee was discussed. Finally, water quality purification effect was investigated by computing the contaminant material dispersion according to whether the levee was or not.

  • The multi-outlets were installed on the existing seawater exchange breakwater in order to improve seawater exchange rate at Jumunjin harbor. Physical and numerical model system were fulfilled for 4 cases to evaluate seawater exchange system which is able to discharge water remotely. The seawater circulation pattern and seawater exchange rate in the harbor were compared and analyzed. Consequently, total seawater exchange rate for CASE 1 was calculated 48% due to the dead zones which hinder seawater circulation in the harbor. Otherwise, the seawater exchange rates of CASE 2, CASE 3, and CASE 4 with the installation of the system were enhanced 19%, 15% and 17%, respectively compare to CASE 1.

  • Using UF-SWRO hybrid process, pre-blending tests of seawater and brackish water were performed to investigate the effects on removal of boron and humic acid (HA). Feedwater pre-blending was set based on TDS concentration from 15,000 mg/L to 27,000 mg/L and analyzed for boron removal characteristics. Also organics rejection at same TDS concentration range was investigated by injecting HA. Boron concentration appeared to be high as TDS concentration was high ranging from 76.60% to 83.27%, but boron concentration in final produced water was increased up to 0.69 mg/L from 0.48 mg/L. In cases of HA tests at 10 mg/L, 22,500 mg/L TDS appeared to be higher removal rate of 17.59% than a very poor result of 8.43% in 27,000 mg/L. But high HA removal rate of 57.14% was obtained in produced water with 22,500 mg/L TDS containing 10 mg/L of HA and 27,000 mg/L TDS yielded lower boron removal rate of 54.49%. Meanwhile it was found that a relatively high flux and recovery rate were obtained following process when feedwater was injected with HA. It is considered that most of fouling substances were eliminated by binding between HA and $Ca^{2+}$. Thus, when desalination using UF-SWRO with respect to boron and HA, TDS concentration is determined to be advantageous as lower.

  • Pyrosequencing of 16S rDNA tags was used to obtain the bacterial diversity and community structure in the uncultured seawaters as well as in the cultured seawaters, which were collected from the 7 ports (Cheonbu, Hyunpo, Taeha, Namyang, Sadong, Dodong, and Jeodong) and 1 seashore (Guam) around the Ulleng island, Korea. Alphaproteobacteria were the most abundant group in the clean seawaters such as seawaters of Taeha and Sadong ports. Gammaproteobacteria proportion increased depending upon the wastewater amounts mixed with the seawaters such as seawaters of Namyang, Dodong, and Jeodong ports. The genuses of Alteromonas (from samples of Cheonbu, Taeha, Guam, Namyang, Sadong), Shewanella (from sample of Jeodong), and Vibrio (from samples of Hyunpo and Dodong) were dominant group in each of the cultured seawaters incubated in marine broth (Difoco). The results suggest that the incoming wastewaters to the port seawaters contribute to the dynamic change of the marine bacterial community around the Ulleng island.

  • To determine the optimal storage method and longest possible storage period of Zostera marina seeds, we examined post-storage germination rates using different storage methods and periods for Z. marina seeds harvested in southern coast of Korea. Storage methods included in seawater at room temperature with air supply, seawater at $4^{\circ}C$, seawater at $30^{\circ}C$, an aquarium with continuous seawater circulation, seawater at room temperature in an airtight tank, a refrigerator at $-20^{\circ}C$, and a desiccator at room temperature. Germination rates of Z. marina seeds stored in seawater at $4^{\circ}C$ showed highest germination (52.0%), whereas those of seeds stored in seawater at room temperature and an aquarium were 27.4% and 17.7%, respectively. But the seeds stored in seawater at $30^{\circ}C$, a refrigerator, and a desiccator did not germinate. Storage periods were 10, 20, 30, 60, 180 and 240 days of storage. Z. marina seeds maintained germination rates of 46.4~52.4% until 10~60 days of storage, but showed rapidly decreasing germination rates after then and no germination after 240 days.

  • An experimental study regarding the effect of emulsions on RO is presented. Heavy oil was added to the sea water and the distilled water separately and treated for 30 minutes by a homogenizer to make emulsions. For the case of the sea water without heavy oil the permeate decreased from the beginning of the experiment. Chloride and conductivity increased with time, due to the fouling occurring as the suspended solids in the sea water accumulated on the membrane surface. Rejection rate of salt was 99.6~99.7%. As for the sea water containing heavy oil, the permeate decreased slowly from the beginning of the experiment. This result was the same for the case of the sea water only. However. chloride and conductivity increased significantly when heavy oil was added. In the second experiment with sea water containing heavy oil, the operation time of RO was reduced considerably. With addition of oil, the chloride increased greatly, while the permeate reduced comparatively. In the experiment where emulsion of $0.3{\sim}0.8mg/{\ell}$ was supplied to RO. oil concentration was about 10ppb in the permeate at the end of the experiment. In case of the distilled water containing heavy oil. the conductivity increased. However. the permeate reduced to 30% compared to the case of the sea water containing heavy oil. The case of sea water containing heavy oil showed an opposite result, but the effect of the addition of oil on RO was significant. Oil caused fouling of the RO and the contamination of the whole system, and as the result the system could not be operated properly. As a result the membrane capacity, the amount and water quality of permeate deteriorated significantly.
