Understanding the severity of the typhoon-induced storm-surge helps in planning reaction and in preventing further disaster. Natural disasters due to the storm-surge are predictable from accurate observations and forecasts from numerical simulations. What we can do is to make intelligent effort to minimize the loss due to the disaster to the most extent with the technology of early warning, forecast and prevention activity. In this paper, we propose the design of GIS-based Web Service System to visualize the time-varying storm-surge's height and wind field data effectively with 3 different kinds of resolution for predict and prevent storm-surge disasters. This system is one of the efforts to provide the storm-surge forecast service to general public and share two-way more helpful information to coastal resident through the Internet.
Natural disaster such as inundation due to the typhoon induced storm-surge has inflicted severe losses on the coastal area. The problem of global warming and sea surface rising has issued and thus influences the increase of frequency and potential power of storm-surge. What we can do is to make intelligent effort to predict and prevent the losses through the early warning and prevention activity from the accurate prediction and forecasting about the time-varying storm-surge height and its arriving time resulted from the numerical simulation with sea observations. In this paper, we developed the web service based GIS-Enabled storm-surge visualization system to predict and prevent the storm-surge disasters. Moreover. for more accurate topography around coastal area and fine-grid storm-surge numerical model, we have accomplished GIS-based coastal mapping through LiDAR measurement.

Simulation of the trans-oceanic or trans-basin propagation of a tsunami is a computer-intensive task. This study demonstrates an effective and detailed visualization technique to deal with the vast amount of surface-elevation and velocity-field output. This high-definition visualization technique is used to present simulations of the 1960 and 2010 Chilean earthquake tsunamis and the 1983 Central East (Japan) Sea earthquake tsunami. This tsunami-visualization method using high-definition graphic animation is an appropriate tool to show detailed tsunami-propagation behavior over an ocean or coastal sea, as exemplified by the Pacific Ocean and East (Japan) Sea tsunami events.

Effects of material surface property, hydrophobic or hydrophilic, on the bio-fouling occurred on the bodies submerged in the sea water are investigated experimentally. 4 test models are used in the experiment, which includes aluminum foil in common use, AAO applied hydrophobic surface, HDFS coated hydrophobic surface and hydrophilic surface. Hydrophobic surfaces with numerous micro & nano-scale pillars on it seems to play very important role of preventing them from fouling in initial stage while the effects disappear in long term sense of fouling process. It is concluded that the surface hydrophobicity retards the initial fouling until the fouling thickness is smaller than the heights of the pillars on it but the effects diminish with the fouling proceeds so that the thickness grows bigger than the pillar heights.

Under global warming, the steadily increasing sea surface temperature (SST) severely impacts marine ecosystems, such as the productivity decrease and change in marine species distribution. Recently, the catch of Todarodes Pacificus, one of South Korea's primary marine resources, has dramatically decreased. In this study, we analyze the marine environment that affects the formation of fishing grounds of Todarodes Pacificus and develop seasonal habitat suitability index (HSI) models based on various satellite data including Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data to continuously manage fisheries resources over Korean exclusive economic zone. About 83% of catches are found within the range of SST of 14.11-26.16℃,sea level height of 0.56-0.82 m, chlorophyll-a concentration of 0.31-1.52 mg m-3, and primary production of 580.96-1574.13 mg C m-2 day-1. The seasonal HSI models are developed using the Arithmetic Mean Model, which showed the best performance. Comparing the developed HSI value with the 2019 catch data, it is confirmed that the HSI model is valid because the fishing grounds are formed in different sea regions by season (East Sea in winter and Yellow Sea in summer) and the high HSI (> 0.6) concurrences to areas with the high catch. In addition, we identified the significant increasing trend in SST over study regions, which is highly related to the formation of fishing grounds of Todarodes Pacificus. We can expect the fishing grounds will be changed by accelerating ocean warming in the future. Continuous HSI monitoring is necessary to manage fisheries' spatial and temporal distribution.

3-D coordinates that result form GPS survey are not applied directly in korea because they are based on WGS 84 ellipsoid. Thus they must be transformed into longitude, latitude on the Bessel ellipsoid and orthometric height. Transformation parameters must be determined in order to perform the coordinate transformation. Also, coordinate transformation be preformed on longitude, latitude and ellipsoidal height. First estimation of Bessel geoidal height must be accomplished to acquire Bessel ellipsoidal height This paper suggests accuracy of coordinate transformation according to the estimation method of Bessel geoidal height. Also, This paper suggests that Bessel geoidal height have influence on the coordinates transformation.

In this paper, the flow around a V-shaped plate positioned against horizontal flow is numerically simulated by using finite volume method and experimentally visualized in two dimensional tank by dye injection method. The upwelling flow artificially induced by V-shaped plate mixes the stratified stagnant flow. It can be applied to mitigate the eutrophication and stratification of sea in the vicinity of offshore structures.

Recently, coastal damage according to the natural disaster like storm-surge, overflowing of the sea has been massively increased. In case of earth fill at the seaside, there are a lot of weak areas of the natural disaster and it has also high possibility that a large disaster happens. Thus flood expectation map in the reclaimed land using 3D spatial information was produced in this study. The area around Myungji, Kangsugu, Busan which was made with the large scale earth fils at the seaside was designated as a study area. Observation of both costal datum and ground height using the tidal date and field surveying dates was conducted. Terrain model using the GIS program was produced and than 3D building model was produced using 3D MAX. It was shown that there are possibility more than 50% if over 4.5m storm-surge is happening, as a result of calculating the virtual flooded area on the produced cartographic map.

It's been reported that the global warming effect has invoked the ever increasing typhoon intensity and long-term sea level rise which jointly cause severe wave overtopping over breakwaters or shore dykes. A simple measure to cope with this undesirable change may be just to increase the crest height of the dykes and breakwaters. This is surely effective to prevent wave overtopping, but it also decreases the seaward visibility of coastal waterfront. In this paper, a dynamic deformable rubber membrane parapet which not only reduces wave overtopping in storm period but also secures seascapes in normal days is presented. Several optimal configurations of the parapet are proposed. Through numerical analyses using a nonlinear finite element model and hydraulic experiments, the air controlled expansion and contraction of the parapets, their behavior against wave overtopping and structural stability are investigated.
As the sea connecting with the East Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk is the most potential area of gas hydrates in the world. In other to examine geophysical structures of gas hydrate-bearing sediments in the Sea of Okhotsk, the CHAOS (hydro-Carbon Hydrate Accumulation in the Okhotsk) international research expedition was carried out in August 2003. In the expedition, high-resolution seismic and geochemical survey was also conducted. Sparker seismic profiles show only diffusive high-amplitude reflections without BSRs at BSR depth. It means that BSR appears to be completely different images on seismic profiles obtained using different frequencies. Many gas chimneys rise up from BSR depth to seafloor. The chimneys can be divided into two groups with different seismic characteristics; wipe-out (WO) and enhanced reflection (ER) chimneys. Different seismic responses in the chimneys would be caused by amount of gas and gas hydrates filling in the chimneys. In hydroacoustic data, a lot of gas flares rise up several hundreds meters from seafloor to the water column. All flares took placed at the depths within gas hydrate stability zone. It is interpreted that gas hydrate-bearing sediments with low porosity and permeability due to gas hydrate filling in the pore space make good pipe around gas chimneys in which gas is migrating up without loss of amount. Therefore, large-scale gas flare at the site on gas chimney releases into the water column.
