  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the topographical factors (16 items), physico-chemical properties of soil (13 items) and meteorological factors(9 items) on the height growth of Pinus thunbergii stands along the coastal area in Korea. According to the coefficients by partial correlation analysis in total area, it was found that tree height growth was considerably affected by local topography, soil hardness, soil B-horizental depth, effective soil depth, soil moisture, parent rock, soil texture, and etc.. And the soil factors were available $P_2O_5$, total nitrogen, base saturation, exchangeable $Ca^{{+}+}$, and etc.. In partial correlation analysis, annual relative humidity, annual precipitation, index of aridity, and etc. were found to be the most important factors influencing on tree height growth of Pinus thunbergii stands. In conlusion, the topographical, soil and meteorological factors have multiplex influence on the tree height growth in the Pinus thunbergii stands. They promise to provide the basis of improving not only the selection of suitable sites and the management of soil fertilizer but also the estimation of growth and yield. Hence these results would be used successfully for the design in the scientific forest working plan.

  • This study was carried out to analysis the structure of forest vegetation at the southern and northern slopes of Mt. Kum in Namhae. The results obtained were summarized as follows : The upper layer of south slope at the altitude of 100m was only distributed at Pinus thunbergii and Pinus densiflora. According to increase of altitude, the importance value of Pinus thunbergii was more decreased. In the upper layer of north slope, importance value of Pinus thunbergii was very high in the altitude of 100m, and was very low in the 200m. And also, importance value of Quercus variabilis and Steuortia koreana was high from 200m to 600m. The number of individuals of Pinus thunbergii and Pinus densiflora in the south slope were more increased than those of the north slope. The distributional class of D.B.H, showed an equal tendency in south and north slope, especially-Quercus variabilis and Quercus serrata had a good growth in north slope. The stand density in the upper lacer was high in south slope but mean acreage and mean distance of individual trees showed low. The species diversity indices were relatively lower in south slope than in north slope, and the maximum of species diversity showed slightly high in south slope. The evenness showed lower in south slope than in north slope relatively. By the cluster analysis used the similarity.

  • To investigate the effect of sulfate deposition un forest tree nutrition, 15 forest stands of Pinus thunbergii were selected throughout Yochon industrial complex, in which is influenced by chronic air pollution. Concentrations of sulfate sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were analysed fur current and 1-year-old needles of Pinus thunbergii tree. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. Significant higher accumulation of sulfate S, computed with that of unpolluted needles, was observed at all sites, ranging front 0.11% to 0.35% in current needles, and from 0.13% to 0.32% in 1-year-old needles. 2. Ranging from 0.60% to 1.42% in current needles, and from 0.58% to 0.88% 1-year-old needles, respectively, nitrogen concentrations were significantly lower at 7 sites for current needles, and at all sites for 1-year-old needles than at unpolluted site. 3. Phosphorus and potassium levels were significantly lower at very few sites, compared with unpolluted site. 4. Calcium concentrations were significantly lower at 8 sites and 9 sites for current and 1-year old needles than at unpolluted site, ranging from 0.123% to 0.352% and from 0.201% to 0.371% in 1-year old needles, respectively. 5. Ranking from 0.077% to 0.152% in current needles, and from 0.056% to 0.105% in 1-year-old needles, magnesium concentrations were lower at only 2 sites for current needles tut at 12 sites for 1-year-old needles. 6. There were significant declines of concentrations of calcium and magnesium in current needles as sulfate accumulation increased. For 1-year-old needles, there were significant negative correlations-hips between sulfate and nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentration. It is concluded that deposition of sulfuric air pollutant deteriorated nutrients status, resulting in tree decline, in Pinus thunbergii forest in Yochon industrial complex.

  • The objectives of this paper were to study the existence of resistant substance to pine gall midge from needles of Pinus densiflora, P. thunbergii, P. virginiana, and P. thunbergii${\times}$P. virginiana, and also to investigat whether terpenoids, fragrant substance contained in those species seduce or evade imago of pine gall midge to oviposit. Also, terpenoids and phenolic compounds were bioassayed on larva. The results are follows. Adults of pine gall midge oviposited indiscriminately all investigated pine species, while gall formation rate by pine gall midge showed 0% in Pinus virginiana, 9% in P. thunbergii${\times}$P. virginiana, 22% in P. thunbergii. It is suggested that young larvae is necrotized by resistant substance in the needles of P. virginiana. This results might mean that fragrant substance, terpenoids, extracted from pine species is not seducible or evadable substance. Larvae of pine gall midge placed on terpenoid and resin were not necrotized. The necrosis rate of larvae of pine gall midge cultivated in the solution of phenolic compounds extracted from needles of P. virginiana, salicylic acid and chitinase showed 89, 92, and 86% respectively. And necrosis rate was 56 and 59% in phenolic compounds extracted from P. densiflora and gallic acid respectively. So, it is postulated that phenolic compounds contained in needles of P. virginiana, salicylic acid and chitinase are resistant substance to pine gall midge.

  • One of the sapstain fungal species isolated from the stained sapwood of a Japanese black pine in Korea was characterized. The fungal species is tolerant to cycloheximide and has Petosum-like synnema and Sporothrix type synanamorph which are found in the anamorphs of the Ophiostoma piceae complex group. But the species could not form perithecia on MEA. Based on cultural and morphological properties and analysis of the $\beta$-tubulin gene sequence, the fungal species was identified as Ophiostoma quercus. Here, we report mycological characteristics of the anamorphic stage of Ophiostoma quercus isolated in Korea.

  • It is difficult to conduct an on-site investigation of Kaesung since it's located in North Korea. After the devastating Korean civil war we have lost a lot of authentic structures. At present, the statement of those who have seen the Kaesung during the time would be of great help in bringing out the significance of this study. According to Ma Hae-song, who was a local in Kaesung. He vividly remembered how his neighborhood looks like and he even mentioned the every single detail of his house in his essay. Moreover he also compared the traditional Han-ok in the former time from the household of other countries. There was an extraordinary interest and insight in Han-ok. This study estimated Ma hae-song's Gaesuong house based on Ma hae-song's personal and supplementary records. the contents by exchanging e-mails with his eldest son, poet Ma Jong-ki. Through the above process, it was confirmed that the writer Mahae Song's Gaeseong House was a typical wealthy merchant's house located in Donghaerang, a luxury residential area, and was engaged in commerce.

  • This study was carried out to increase germination by classifying seeds as seed coat colors of three species of genus Pinus. As result, the seeds classified as colors showed a difference. In seed length, Pinus densiflora (Pd) and P. thunbergii (Pt) had no difference while P. rigitaeda (Pr) had a difference between light yellow seeds and dark brown seeds (p<0.05). Only Pt was different in seed width. And in 1,000 seeds weight the three species showed a great difference while were not significantly different in seed moisture contents. In percent germination, all of the three species had a difference, especially that of Pr was very wide. Pd and Pt were not different in mean germination time but Pr showed a difference between light yellow seeds and dark brown seeds.
