This study was carried out to investigate the relation of acid depositions and chlorophyll concentration in the Pinus thunbergii leaves. pH of throughfall in Pinus thunbergii forest was 4.20 at industrial sites, and 4.87 at urban sites. Total chlorophyll concentration in leaves were 0.5984 at industrial sites, and 0.6784 at urban sites. The average $SO_2$ concentration in air was 0.029ppm at industrial sites, and 0.011ppm at urban sites. Correlation between chlorophyll concentration in the Pinus thunbergii leaves and acid depositions was pH (r=-0.8769), ${NO_3}^-$ (r=0.6983), ${SO_4}^{2-}$ (r=0.8929), $SO_2$ (r=0.8738), and $NO_2$ (r=0.8523) (p<0.001). respectively. The estimation equation of chlorophyll concentration in the Pinus thunbergii leaf (Y) were given by Y=4.8979 + 0.7698pH + $0.8412{SO_4}^2$ + $0.8673SO_2$, + $0.8767NO_2$+ $0.8767{NO_3}^-$ ($r^2$=0.8873), which coefficients of determination was 0.88.
In order to find out pollutants in leaves of pinus thunbergii, and relationship between pollutants in soil and leaves of pinus thunbergii surrounding Onsan Industrial Complex in Korea, this study was performed. Concentrations of water-soluble sulfur of P. thunbergii leaves were a range of 0.06%-0.25%, but at the vicinity of industrial complex, it was judged to be hindered in growing trees as a range of 0.13%-0.25%. In P. thunbergii leaves the contents of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were showed as a range of 87.2 ppm-319.8 ppm, 100.0 ppm-581.3 ppm, 39.0 ppm-134.0 ppm and 1.2 ppm-4.8 ppm, respectively, and they were generally high at P. thunbergii leaves of the vicinity of refinery of industrial complex. But concentrations of Cu and Pb only showed little contents. In the correlation between soil and leaves pollutants, there were significant correlation between total S and water-soluble S(r=$643^{\ast}$), between Fe(r=$0.681^{\ast}$), Zn(r=$0.832^{{\ast}{\ast}}$)), and Cd(r=$0.775^{{\ast}{\ast}}$) in soils and those in P. thunbergii leaves at 10% or 5% level, respectively, and as these results, it was inferrec that heavy metals in soils had relations with those in leaves.
Accumulation of air pollutants such as $SO_2$ and HF, chlorophyll contents, wax concentrations in needle tissue and needle growth of Pinus thunbergii were studied to verify possibilities of bioindicators of air pollution in Yochon Industrial Complex from July to October, 1991. The concentrations of water-soluble sulfur and fluorine increased nearer to the pollution sources regardless of sampling time, but water-soluble sulfur varied little during investigation and fluorine accumulated more with the passage of time. Total chlorophyll contents decreased a little in the slightly polluted site but sharply in the heavily polluted site. The higher the pollution level was, the more decreased chloroform-extractable wax. Air pollution exposure inhibited needle growth of Pinus tbunbergii during the latter part of growth period. Water soluble sulfur, fluorine and wax concentrations in needle of Pinus thunbergii were rather wood sensitive indicators of susceptibility to ambient air pollution from early July to early October. Chlorophyll contents seemed to be able to be used as a bioindicator of air pollution in early stage of needle development and in the severely polluted area. In the meanwhile needle length must be used as a bioindicator in latter part of growing season.
To investigate the effect of sulfate deposition un forest tree nutrition, 15 forest stands of Pinus thunbergii were selected throughout Yochon industrial complex, in which is influenced by chronic air pollution. Concentrations of sulfate sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were analysed fur current and 1-year-old needles of Pinus thunbergii tree. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. Significant higher accumulation of sulfate S, computed with that of unpolluted needles, was observed at all sites, ranging front 0.11% to 0.35% in current needles, and from 0.13% to 0.32% in 1-year-old needles. 2. Ranging from 0.60% to 1.42% in current needles, and from 0.58% to 0.88% 1-year-old needles, respectively, nitrogen concentrations were significantly lower at 7 sites for current needles, and at all sites for 1-year-old needles than at unpolluted site. 3. Phosphorus and potassium levels were significantly lower at very few sites, compared with unpolluted site. 4. Calcium concentrations were significantly lower at 8 sites and 9 sites for current and 1-year old needles than at unpolluted site, ranging from 0.123% to 0.352% and from 0.201% to 0.371% in 1-year old needles, respectively. 5. Ranking from 0.077% to 0.152% in current needles, and from 0.056% to 0.105% in 1-year-old needles, magnesium concentrations were lower at only 2 sites for current needles tut at 12 sites for 1-year-old needles. 6. There were significant declines of concentrations of calcium and magnesium in current needles as sulfate accumulation increased. For 1-year-old needles, there were significant negative correlations-hips between sulfate and nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentration. It is concluded that deposition of sulfuric air pollutant deteriorated nutrients status, resulting in tree decline, in Pinus thunbergii forest in Yochon industrial complex.
The objective of this study was to examine the effects of air pollution on Pinus thunbergii forests surrounding Sasang industrial complex in Korea. The injury index, contents of chlorophyll and mineral elements, and concentrations of water soluble sulfur in needles were investigated at sample plots surrounding industrial complex and compared with those of control far from industrial complex. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. Discoloration of Pinus thunbergii needles was severe in the vicinity of industrial complex, and the older needle age classes was the more severe its injury appeared. Injury index was increased in the vicinity of industrial complex. 2. Water-soluble sulfur concentration was high in the vicinity of industrial complex at all of needle age classes, and those of all plots were higher than that of control. 3. Chlorophyll a contents were lower at surrounding industrial complex than that at control. It was supposed that chlorophyll a was destroyed by air pollutants. Total chlorophyll contents and content ratio of chlorophyll a to b were influenced by decrease of chlorophyll a contents. 4. Phosphorus contents in needles were decreased even in remoted regions with the increase of needle age classes. Colcium contents in needles were decreased near industrial complex at all needle ages classes. 5. There were negative correlation, between injury index and chlorophyll contents, injury index and calcium contents, and there were positive correlation between injury index and calcium contents. 6. Cluster analysis was carried out to divide the injured regions on sample plots. As a result of the analysis, there were devided 3 regions, severe regions(1-8 plots), medium regions(9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 17 plot), slight(13, 14, 16, 18, 19 plot and control). 7. The cross section of visible injured needle showed the destruction of mesophyll cell, sclerenchyma cell in the outside of resin duct and endodermis, partially.
Seasonal patterns of decomposition and nutrient release from the needle litter were examined using litter-bags in coastal Pinus thunbergii forests in nothern Kyushu, Japan. Dry matter losses from decomposing needle litter were smillar in all standsover a experimental period. Mass loss in dry weight is lost rapidly during the first year, and thereafter the rate of loss slows. Litter lost approximately 40% of initial mass in 1 yr. The predicted decay constant, k values ranged from 0.5 to 0.6 Decomposition half-times($t_{0.50}$) ranged from 1.1 to 1.4 year. In the decomposing needle litter, the concentrations of N and P generally increased with time while the concentration of K decreased. A decrease in absolute amount was noted for K during decomposition while in an increase was found for N. The order of mobility of elements was K>P>N. Mineralization phase of N had not appeared during the experiment.
Monoterpenes, phenolic substances, growth substances and total nitrogen from normal needles and infested needles attacked by Thecodiplosis japonensis were compared for Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. Major monoterpene components in P. densiflora needles were ${\beta}$-phellandrene, ${\alpha}$-pinene and those in P. rigida needles were ${\beta}$-pinene and ${\alpha}$-pinene. In P. rigida resistant to this insect, infested needles showed higher ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene and myrcene but lower camphene, limonene and ${\beta}$-phellandrene than normal needles. 2. Orcinol, catechol ferulic acid, salicylic acid and five unknowns were detected in P. rigida needles whereas orcinol, catechol, ferulic acid and four unknowns in P. densiflora needles. 3. Tryptophan, a precursor of IAA, was detected in larvae and also in gall tissues of both P. densiflora and P. thunbergii needles. This fact shows that growth substances may involve in gall formation by Thecodiplosis japonensis. 4. Total nitrogen contents per unit needle weight were neither significantly different between P. densiflora and P. rigida, nor between normal and infested needles.
This study was performed to investigate effects of air pollution on the Pinus thunbergii forests in Onsan industrial districts, and environmental factors, contents of soluble sulfur in needles, and composition of sorest vegetation were examined. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The pH of soils, organic matter and total N were low near the source of air pollutants, and sulfur contents in the soils was high in general. Especially there was significant correlation between the sulfur contents in the soil and pH at 1% level. 2. The contents of soluble sulfur in needles ranged from 0.13% to 0.25% and were generally high, and plot 2 and 3 were the highest of all. 3. In the number of species, 7 species appeared in plot 3 and 20 species in plot 7, and they were low near the source of air pollutants. Total number of individuls, species diversity and evenness increased with in creasing distance from the source of air pollutants. 4. There were significant correlations between the contents of soluble sulfur in needles and the number of species and species diversity at 5%, 1% level, respectively. 5. Importance value of each species was low near the source of air pollutants but Quercus species showed high values in all plots. 6. On these studied plots, Pinus thunbergii, Quercus serrata and smilax china were tolerant, and Rhododendron mucronulatum, Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense, Platycarya strobilacea and Lespedeza maritima were sensitive to air pollution.
This study was carried out to indentify the mycorrhizal development and growth stimulation of Pinus thunbergii seedlings grown on soil growth media which mixed with various amounts of pine bark. The results were follow ; 1. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius were significantly increased in number of short roots and mycorrhizal short roots, height, maximum growth rate, and leaf area than those of no-inoculation. 2. Mycorrhizal formation according to bark contents was highest by 25% bark treatment, and decreased in 50 and 75% bark contents. 3. Within the same treatment of bark content, seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius showed more increased height and leaf, stem, and root dry weight than those of no-inoculated.
Inhibitory effect of L. leptolepis fallen leaf extracts on the germination of Pinus densiflora, ${\times}$ Pinus rigitaeda, Pinus rigida, Pinus thunbergii and Larix leptolepis was investigated. Germination of those seeds in culture room and in pot at field showed the highly significant inhibitory effects by the aqueous extracts from L. leptolepis fallen leaves. Among them L. leptolepis was the most severely inhibited by the aqueous extracts used. To identify allelopathic substances, thin-layer chromatography was employed. Gallic, ferulic, t-cinnamic and vanillic acids were identified from fallen leaves of L. leptolepis. From the results, it is assumed that autotoxicity of L. leptolepis may act as inhibitory factors on germination of the species in natural stands.
