  • In this study, the upwind McCormack scheme is introduced to combine the advantage of McCormack scheme, the second order accuracy and simplicity, and the advantage of the upwind scheme, to be applied to the discontinuous flows. This scheme also has another advantage of treating the source terms effectively. This model is approved through applying to the discontinuous flow case with the analytical solution, and the natural river with very strong source terms. Applications of the upwind McCormack scheme developed in this paper show good agreements with the analytical solution without numerical oscillation in existing McCormack scheme. Futhermore, applications to the natural river, the lower Han river with strong variation of bed and width, also show good results in case of both steady flow and unsteady flow. The upwind McCormack scheme in this study will be used for the analysis of flow in natural rivers effectively.

  • QUAL2E-AFOSM model is developed to forecast the water quality by reliability analysis in the Nakdong River. A varied-flow analysis is performed for the reach of Waegwan to Mulgeum to estimate hydraulic parameters. An optimization technique by BFGS method is applied to determine the optimum reaction parameters and calibrations and verifications are performed based on these parameters. A reliability analysis for the stochastic analysis in a river is studied using the AFOSM method. The variations of water quality and discharge in the headwater, tributaries, and reaction coefficients are considered. Risks of violating existing water quality standards at several loactions in the Nakdong River are computed by using the QUAL2E-AFOSM method. The computed results computed by QUAL2E-AFOSM model agree with those of the Monte-Carlo method in QUAL2EU model.

  • Astochastic finite element model which reflects both the effect of discontinuities and the uncertainty of material properties in underground rock mass has been developed. Latin Hypercube Sampling technique has been mobilized and compared with the Monte Carlo simulation method. To consider the effect of discontinuities, the joint finite element model, which is known to be suitable to explain faults, cleavage, things of that nature, has been used in this study. To reflect the uncertainty of material properties, multi-random variables are assumed as the joint normal stiffness and the joint shear stiffness, which could be simulated in terms of normal distribution. The developed computer program in this study has been verified by practical example and has been applied to analyze the circular cavern with discontinuous rock mass.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis of behaviors of rear closer of vertical launch system under rocket plume based on fluid structure interaction analysis. The rocket plume loading is modeled by fully Eulerian method and elasto-plastic behavior of rear cover is calculated by total Lagrangian method based on a 9-node planar element. The interface motion and boundary conditions are described by a hybrid particle level-set method within the ghost fluid framework. We compare the fluid flow pattern between different rear closer models which are elast-plastic and rigid deformation.

  • Linear GPA(Gas Path Analysis) and non-linear GPA programs for performance diagnostics of a turboprop engine were developed, and a study for selection of optimal measurement variables was performed. Simultaneous faults in the compressor, the compressor turbine and the power turbine, which occur damage of the engine, were assumed. The non-linear GPA analysis was carried out with an iterative method, where the performance degradation rate of independent parameters was divided into same intervals. It was compared with the result by the Newton-Raphson method for observing the effect of an iterative method. According to the analysis result, it was found that performance of non-linear GPA can be influenced on the type of the iterative method. For showing effects of the number of measurement variables both the linear and non-linear GPAs were analyzed with 10, 8 and 6 measurement sets, respectively. RMS error between them were compared each other. It was realized that the more measurement parameters are used, and the more accurate result may be obtained. However much better result can be obtained with measurement parameters selected properly Moreover, RMS error by using non-linear GPA was less than that by using linear GPA.

  • Geotextile tube is hydraulically filled with dredged materials and has been applied to coastal protection and scour protection, dewatering method of slurry, and isolation of contaminated material. Recently, geotextile tube technology is no longer alternative construction technique but suitable desired solution. In this paper, the numerical analysis was performed to investigate the behavior of geotextile tube with various properties of geotextile sheet and hydraulic pumping conditions. Numerical analysis was executed to compare with the results from the large-scale field model tests, and also with those of plane strain analysis and 3-D FEM analysis. A geotextile tube was modeled using the commercial finite element analysis program ABAQUS and the one-quarter of tube was modeled. Behavior of geotextile tube during the hydraulic pumping procedure was analyzed by comparing the large-scale field model test and numerical analysis. The shape variation and maximum tube height between the numerical analysis results and large-scale filed test results are turned out to be in a good agreement.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency of various solution techniques and propose new efficient solution techniques for space trusses. Solution techniques used in this study are three load control methods (Newton-Raphson Method, modified Newton-Raphson Method, Secant-Newton Method), two load-displacement control methods(Arc-length Method, Work Increment Control Method) and three combined load-displacement control methods(Combined Arc-length Method I , Combined Arc-length MethodⅡ, Combined Work Increment Control Method). To evaluate the efficiency of these solution techniques, we must examine accuracy of their solutions, convergences and computing times of numerical examples. The combined load-displacement control methods are the most efficient in the geometric nonlinear solution techniques and in tracing post-buckling behavior of space truss. The combined work increment control method is the most efficient in tracing the buckling load of spate trusses with high degrees of freedom.

  • This paper presents the application of the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique to simulate the debris flow. The main objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of CEL technique to the behavior of debris flow, such as flow velocity and influence area. Comprehensive studies to verify the behavior of debris flow are presented in this study. Through comparison with measured flow velocity from Umyeonsan (Mt.), CEL approach was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in actual debris flow. In addition, CEL technique accurately simulated the behavior of debris flows, therefore, it can be used for designing the countermeasure structure.
