  • Since students of the College of Maritime Sciences will become professionals contributing to the development of the Korean shipping industry after graduation, they are required to successfully complete school life including theoretical and practical curriculum with health promotion behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing health promotion behavior by students of the College of Maritime Science in order to collect basic data through a survey for the development of health promotion programs. Health promotion behavior by students of the College of Maritime Sciences was less frequent than by other college students, and the levels of health promotion behavior sub-domains were lower in order of interpersonal relations, spiritual growth, stress management, nutrition, physical activity, and health responsibility. The most influential factors for health promotion behavior were learner participation, health promotion self-efficacy, self-esteem, and social support. It is necessary to develop a differentiated health promotion program considering the characteristics of students and to apply it systematically from the time of admission to improve health promotion behavior by students of the College of Maritime Sciences.

  • Students at Maritime University can expect to improve their understanding of the jobs they will perform in the future through long-term boarding in a one-year boarding practice that allows them to understand necessary work practices. Satisfaction with attending maritime college can also affect the job satisfaction and turnover intention of shipping industry workers after graduation. Therefore, by checking job satisfaction for each year of study, we intend to analyze and improve the curriculum or factors necessary for their future career choice. Based on previous studies, this study attempted to determine the effects of self-efficacy, teamwork, and self-leadership of maritime college students on job satisfaction through career planning, .analyze the factors that affect job satisfaction by year of study, and empirically confirm the factors students need in each year. The analysis, found that self-efficacy had the greatest influence on job satisfaction, and the effects of teamwork and self-leadership were similar in size.

  • It has been about 30 years since women students entered the Maritime College at Mokpo National Maritime University (MMU) and Korea Maritime & Ocean University to train as maritime seafarers. The women have been choosing a maritime college regardless of the Boarding Service Reserve System. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously study the motivation for admission, preferences for boarding, and desired career paths to guide the distinction and vision of maritime colleges. Accordingly, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on 93 women students attending the Maritime College at MMU. Of the respondents, 35.5 % said that they enrolled to become maritime officials and 30.1 % to become maritime seafarers. In addition to the current training for maritime seafarers, additional courses are required to train maritime experts. The study found that 88.2 % of the respondents thought that women's embarkation was more difficult than usual. It is considered that a systematic education program is needed for the onboard life of women maritime seafarers in schools and shipping companies. It was found that 69.6 % of the respondents preferred to embark as seafarers after graduation. After graduating from university, 32.3 % of the respondents said that they preferred to become navigation officers or engineers. It was also found that 24.7 % preferred to become marine-related civil servants / professionals, and 18.3 % preferred to become marine police. From the total, 83.9 % hoped for careers in marine-related fields. It is, therefore, necessary to organize courses and further education according to the motives for admission and preferred occupations of women students.

  • Harsh seawater environment is subdivided into marine atmosphere, splash zone, tidal zone, submerged zone and bottom of sea depending on the exposed part. Since corrosion rate depends on the conditions of the exposed parts, proper protection and maintenance for each parts are essential for long-term use of steel structures in seawater environment. For steel structures which were installed in Shiwha Lake, a special maintenance system is required to guarantee its long-term durability and safety. As the tidal power plant has recently been operated, the salinity has risen due to the rapid influx of seawater upstream into Sihwa Lake and the corrosion tendency of the structure is variable according to the water level fluctuation. In this study, corrosion properties of steel structures under water level fluctuation was evaluated by corrosion rate measurement, visual inspection and natural potential measurement and their durability and life management were discussed in view of the effect of variation in of seawater level fluctuations in Shihwa Lake.

  • A series of triaxial test was performed in order to determine critical state parameters of calcareous Jeju sand, which comprises angular shape particles with many pores in the surface. It is observed that Jeju sand mainly shows the contractive behavior during triaxial shear due to high extreme void ratios and large compressibility. The peak friction angle of Jeju sand decreases slightly with increasing mean effective stress due to the particle crushing of carbonate materials. However, the peak friction angle of Jeju sand is higher than that of other silica sands because of the more angular particle shape. The critical state friction angle of Jeju sand gradually decreases when the mean effective stress at a critical state increases. Whereas, there is not a clear influence of void ratio on the critical state friction angle. Critical state parameters of Jeju sand are similar to those of calcareous sands, but significantly larger than those of common sands.

  • The shipping and port industries have traditionally been male-centered, and although the scope of entry for female mariners is increasing, the proportion of female workers is still low. However, research on career barriers and career decision levels in this industry has not yet been conducted. This study can explain the dif iculties in career development experienced by women in this industry and comprehensively explain the socio-cultural context or environmental factors to which the individual belongs in order to improve it. The purpose of this study was to derive career barrier factors and investigate how they affect career decision levels among female students enrolled in M University's Maritime College. The career barriers perceived by female students at Maritime College were derived from gender discrimination (GD), career undecided and lack of preparation (IOU), work-family conflict (WFC), lack of individual characteristics (LPQ), and lower-than-expected job prospects (LOE). As a result of analyzing how the derived career barrier factors af ect the career decision level, it was found that IOU had a significant negative effect on the career decision level. GD, WFC, LPQ, and LOE did not have a significant effect on career decision level. The study conclusions can be used as important data for career guidance and counseling for female maritime college women who want to overcome career barriers and improve their career decision-making levels.
