  • Two antimicrobial extracts of Rheum palmatum L. and Coptis chinesis France root as well as grapefruit seed extract(GFSE) were applied to dipping treatment for green chilli peppers, which were then packed in low density polyethylene(LDPE) films incorporated with 1% antimicrobial extracts and stored 10$^{\circ}C$. Dipping and packaging treatments suppressed the growth of putrefactive microorganisms and the duly ratio of green chilli peppers. In addition, the loss ratio of ascorbic acid content and their weight during the storage was lower with treated green chilli peppers. Consequently, the combined method of dipping and packaging in antimicrobial agents turned out to be superior to dipping treatment or film-packaging in the view point of decay ratio and the keeping qualities of green chilli peppers.

  • The adsorption of the antimicrobial compounds(AMCs) and their heat-resistance were investigated for the packaging film manufacture, wherein, the antimicrobial compounds were adsorbed on a silica component. The naturally source antimicrobial compounds were produced by methylotropic actinomycetes strains MO-16 and MO-17, extracted with ethylacetate. Antimicrobial compounds adsorbed on water-soluble silica had retained activity against Gram(+) and the Gram(-) bacteria after heat treatment at 150$\^{C}$ for 5min. The benzoic acid showed strong antimicrobial activity to fungi and was stable to heat treatment. The combination of antimicrobial compound plus benzoic acid was synergistic against test strains. Therefore, we estimated that the water-soluble silica is suitable for the packaging film manufacture as a adsorbent of the antimicrobial compounds.

  • This study was investigated the antimicrobial activity of clove extracts according to extraction solvents. The extracts were tested for their antimicrobial activity against several food spoilage microorganisms including Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The methanol extract showed stronger antimicrobial activities than water extract. However, petroleum ether extract did not show antimicrobial activity. The water extract of clove showed growth inhibition effect against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus, whereas no effect against Bacillus subtilis. The methanol extract of clove extracts showed more sensitive antimicrobial activity in Gram (+) bacteria than in Gram (-) bacteria. The antimicrobial activities were increased with increasing concentration of the clove extract.

  • Low density polyethylene(LDPE) film was fabricated with the addition of benzoic acid, or/and JP which contained water-soluble silica adsorbed a natural antimicrobial compounds. The used antimicrobial compounds were isolated from culture broths of methylotropic actinomycetes strains MO-16 and MO-17 which was newly isolated from soils. An antimicrobial compound retained antimicrobial activity after heat treatment at 121$^{\circ}C$ for 5 min. JP, which obtained from Japan as a antimicrobial agent, showed antimicrobial activity in the concentration of 100 mg/mL. The silica LDPE film revealed the growth inhibition of total aerobic bacteria in packaged minced pork compared with commercial film and of E. coil on a contained agar plate. In the storage testing of various packaged foods at room temperature for 30 days, the film showed excellent preservation compared with commercial film in case of small tomato and Agaricus bisporus.

  • Food packaging strategies have steadily improved with increasing demand for improved food safety, convenience, and shelf life. The development of edible film has been hailed as a technology substituting packaging using synthetic plastics. There has been a surge for research to develop antimicrobial edible films and coatings that can increase microbiological safety while preserving foods. This review addresses recent results that are useful in advancing and extending research into antimicrobial edible films. In this review, we suggest the trend of the development of antimicrobial edible film/coatings by outlining edible film materials, antimicrobial substances, antimicrobial and physical properties of the films, commercial antimicrobial edible films, and methods to statistically predict the efficacy of antimicrobial edible film/coatings, reported in recent studies.

  • Antimicrobial effects of Camellia japonica L. were determined against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes using paper disc method, and minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were measured. Methanol extract (MEex), water fraction (WAfr), and butanol fraction(BUfr) showed antimicrobial effects against all tested microorganisms, with MEex showing strong antimicrobial effect against S. aureus and L. monocytogenes, and WAfr, Bufr, and ethylacetate fraction (EAfr)against S. aureus. No effects were observed in n-hexane fraction (HEfr) and chloroform fraction (CHfr) against all tested microorganisms. All species grown in the medium adding fractions of Camellia Japonica L. leaves extact were inhibited from WAfr and BUfr, repectively.(meaning not clear) MEex showed over 25% inhibitory effect against all tested microorganisms. BUfr showed over 50% inhibitory effect against all microorganisms except L. monocytogenes. EAfr and WAfr showed over 30% effect against S. aureus and L. monocytogenes. MICs of MEex against S. typhimurium and BUfr against S. aureus were 625 g/mL, indicating C. japonica L. extract can exert antimicrobial activity even at low concentration.

  • Coptis chinensis extract and grapefruit seed extract, natural antimicrobial substances, were applied to the dipping treatment of strawberry and incorporated in the packaging films. Strawberry was steeped in the extract solutions of 50 ppm concentration and packed with the low density polyethylene(LDPE) films incorporated with 1% extracts. During the storage at 5$^{\circ}C$, the qualities of microbial counts, awぶy ratio, texture and chemical attributes were measured for the pretreated strawberry. The LDPE films incorporated with the extracts retarded the growth of aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast that had been contaminated before the pretreatment, significantly lowed the decay ratio, and gave better retention of textural firmness. The chemical and physical qualities of strawberry were not affected by the packaging films. When strawberry was steeped in the extract solutions, the effects of the packaging film incorporated with the extracts on the qualities of strawberry were accelerated.
