  • Numerical research has been done for the transverse jet behind a rearward-facings step in turbulent supersonic flow without chemical reaction. Purpose of transverse jet is to enhance mixing of the fuel in the combustor. Two-dimensional unsteady flowfields generated by slot injection into supersonic flow are numerically simulated with the Navier-Stokes equations with two-equation k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Numerical method is used high-order upwind TVD scheme. Eight cases are computed for different slot momentum flux ratios and slot position at downstream of the step. The flow is very similar to the cavity flow, because the jet acts as an obstacle. The numerical results thus show the periodic phenomenon.

  • RANS computational analysis was performed on the head of the launch vehicle including the hammerhead nose pairing in the supersonic regime. The two-dimensional axisymmetric analysis was performed by using laminar, fully turbulent and transition models and compared with the experimental data. It was observed that different flow phenomena occurred depending on the Reynolds number. Under the high Reynolds number condition, the boundary layer becomes turbulent, which is not separated from the surface of the launch vehicle. With the low Reynolds number condition, laminar separation bubble was produced due to the separation and reattachment of the boundary layer on the expansion-compression edge of the hammerhead type nose fairing. The three-dimensional computations with the angle of attack showed a fully detached vortical structure due to the laminar separation bubble. It is proved that the turbulent transition should be considered to predict the separation bubble with the Reynolds number.

  • A numerical study was performed on the transient fuel temperatures of a military aircraft stationed under non-operating static condition. Numerical calculation was peformed by an explicit method using modified Dufort-Frankel scheme. It was assumed that the non-operating aircraft is subjected to repeated daily cycles of air temperature with the solar radiation and wind speed corresponding to the 1 % hot day ambient condition. And, the aircraft was assumed to be in turbulent flow. The convective heat transfer coefficient for turbulent flow on the flat plate suggested by Eckert was employed to calculate heat transfer between the aircraft surface and the ambience. The energy conservation equation on fuel was used as governing equation for this analysis. As a result of this analysis, the wing tank temperature showed the highest temperature and the largest rate of temperature changes among fuel tanks. The results of this analysis could be used as initial foe] temperatures for analysis of the transient fuel temperatures in various flight missions. Also, this analysis method could be used to analysis and design of an aircraft thermal energy management system.

  • The flow characteristics in a stirred tank are very useful in a wide variety of industrial applications. Generally, the flow pattern, power consumption and mixing time in stirred vessels depend not only on the design of the impeller, but also on the tanks' geometry and internal structure. In this study, the analysis of an unstable and unsteady complicated flow characteristics generated by the interaction between the baffle shape and impeller were performed using the ANSYS FLUENT LES Turbulence Model. The study compared the predictions of CFD with the interaction between two types of rotating impellers (axial and radial flows) and the shapes of three baffles. The results of the comparison verified that the design model showed a relatively efficient trend in the mixing flow fields and characteristics around the impeller and baffles during agitation.

  • In the present work, the thrust and torque of multicopter propellers in hovering are predicted based on BET method. The geometry information of the propellers is obtained using a three dimensional scanner and the airfoil section is extracted using CATIA. EDISON CFD is adopted to calculate the drag and lift of airfoil at a given geometry and flow conditions and then thrust is calculated with respect to a given RPMs based on BET. Two simulations with laminar and turbulent flows are considered. The predicted value is compared with the performance data from the Product Company and results from JavaProp software, which is used in the design and prediction of propellers. In the case of a 9-inch propeller, the thrust from the product company is corresponding to the results between the laminar and turbulent flow conditions. In the 16-inch case, the predicted thrust at turbulent flow conditions conformed well with reference one. The predicted torque shows a big difference with the reference data.

  • A comparative study on ground boundary conditions for the airfoil in ground effect has been carried out. The objective of the present study is to clarify effects of the ground boundary conditions so that it will be helpful to analyse results of wind tunnel tests using the fixed ground board or the image method. A low Mach number preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver using the overlap grid method has been applied. It has been turned out that results with the symmetric boundary condition are almost the same to those with the moving boundary condition. Results with the fixed ground boundary show discrepancy to those with the moving boundary condition when flow separation on the ground board takes place.

  • Numerical analysis of the flow field in the reactive medium of End-Burring combustor is studied in order to investigate the combustion characteristics of hybrid combustion. The main part of this study is focused on the port diameter effects of oxidizer injector on the temperature distribution within the reactive field. It is found that the case having the largest port diameter(25 mm) delivers the optimum conditions for the design of End-Burring combustor where the predicted temperature field showed the most acceptable distribution.

  • An experimental study was quantitatively carried out in order to investigate the influence of flow conditions on a boundary layer in the near-wake of a flat plate. Tripping wires attached at various positions were selected to change flow conditions of a boundary layer in the vicinity of trailing edge. The flows such as laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layer at 0.98C from the leading edge are imposed to investigate the evolution of symmetric and asymmetric wake. Measurements were made at freestream velocity of 6.0m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds number is $2.8{\times}10^5$. An x-type hot-wire probe(55P61) was employed to measure at 8 stations in the near-wake region. Test results show that the near-wake of the flat plate for the case of a laminar and transitional boundary layer is sensitive to mean flow shear generated after separation but for the case of turbulent boundary layer is insensitive.

  • In this study, transonic flutter response characteristics have been studied for the AGARD 445.6 wing considering various turbulent models and several angle of attacks. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for flutter computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. The flutter boundaries of AGARD 445.6 wing are verified using developed computational system. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, DES turbulent model using the structured grid system have been applied for the wing model. Characteristics of flutter responses have been investigated for various angle of attack conditions. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.

  • Even though the benefit of flight at high angle-of-attack is to be able to reduce the speed of flight and maneuvers in complex flight environment, the flight at high angle-of-attack, however, is easy to be in stall which is characterized by sever unsteady flow separation over an airfoil. Current unsteady numerical analysis using DES was conducted to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of a NACA 0021 airfoil at high angle-of-attack conditions. And this provides the comparison with the steady numerical one with the typical turbulence models. The unsteady calculation by DES is appropriate in terms of predicting the aerodynamic performance of NACA 0021 airfoil at high angle-of-attack conditions.
