Objectives: This study reports the effects of Korean medical treatment, including the administration of Yanghyeolgeopung-tang, on tension headache. Case presentation: A 48-year-old man with headache and neck pain caused by tension-type headache was managed with Yanghyeolgeopung-tang, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture for 15 days. To evaluate the improvements, a numeric rating scale (NRS), the Korean Headache Impact Test-6 (KHIT-6), and Neck Disability Index (NDI) were used. After treatment, the symptoms were relieved, and there were no particular side effects. The NRS scores reduced from 6 to 3, KHIT-6 from 64 to 48, and NDI from 46 to 22. Conclusion: These results suggest that Korean medicine may be effective for treating tension-type headache.

Objective: This study investigates the efficacy of Korean medical treatment for a patient with peripheral facial palsy caused by cerebellar artery infarction. Methods: A 45-year-old male patient with right facial palsy and left side numbness from cerebellar artery infarction was treated with herbal medicine (ligigeopoongsan), acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and cupping therapy for 37 days. The effects were evaluated using the House-Brackmann (H-B) and Yanagihara's unweighted grading systems. Results: Following treatment, the patient's H-B grade decreased and Yanagihara score improved. Conclusion: Korean medical treatment improved peripheral facial palsy in a patient with cerebellar artery infarction.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to report a case of a woman diagnosed with post hysterectomy syndrome treated with combined Korean medical treatment. Methods A combination of treatment including chuna manual therapy, pharmacopuncture at the lumbar facet joints, acupuncture, cupping, and herbal medicine was provided for 1 month. Progress was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale, Oswestry Disability Index, EuroQol-5Dimension, and Hot Flush Score before and after treatment. Results After treatment, the symptoms were reduced and the quality of life was enhanced, although there was no improvement in the abnormal sensation in the anterior part of the thigh. No adverse events were observed. Conclusions The findings indicate that a combination of Korean medical treatment can be a safe and effective alternative treatment in reducing LBP and hot flushes after hysterectomy.

Many patients have difficulties after stroke. Spasticity is an important one of that difficulties. So in these days, its management is becoming a major issue in rehabilitation. Gagamyounjo-tang was administered to a patient have had spasticity after stroke include Hyulhu(血虛) symptoms. And check the modified Ashworth Scale, Motor grade and VAS for being in the hospital. After treated with Gagamyounjo-tang, Modified Ashworth Scale, Motor grade and VAS have improved, and most of all symptoms about hyulhu(血虛) was disappeared. Based on this result, this study shows that Gagamyounjo-tang was effective in spasticity after stroke especially included Hyulhu(血虛) symptoms.

Objectives The purpose of this review was to investigate clinical treatment trends of Achilles tendinopathy. Methods Clinical studies about Korean medicine treatments on Achilles tendinopathy were searched in 5 databases. The included studies were classified according to the authors, published years, study designs, purposes of study, methods, interventions outcome measures and adverse event. Results In 23 studies, total number of patients were 1,135. The included studies consist of 14 randomized controlled trials (RCT), 5 non-RCT, 2 retrospective study and 2 case reports. Patients were conducted with 9 kinds of treatment, which is acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, acupotomy, moxibustion, cupping, Chuna, herbal medicine, physiotherapy. Most studies used visual analogue scale as primary outcome. Conclusions Based on the results of the collected studies, the use of Korean medicine treatment on Achilles tendinopathy seem to be effective. Despite the large number of RCTs, the level of research cannot be guaranteed, so it is considered that more rigorous researches are needed in future studies.

Objective: The aim of this study was to report the effects of traditional Korean medicine as a treatment for the pain of a compression fracture in a patient with metastatic prostate cancer. Methods: A 60-year-old male patient with a compression fracture was treated with herbal medicines, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture for 25 days. His chief complaints were severe low back pain, pain and numbness in both legs, and right groin pain. The effect of treatment was evaluated by the numerical rating scale (NRS) score for pain, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score, and blood test results (CBC-diff count, CRP, ESR, etc.). Results: After 25 days of inpatient treatment, the patient's pain was controlled. The NRS and ODI scores were lower and most pathological symptoms had decreased. Conclusions: Traditional Korean medicine can be a solution for patients with compression fractures arising from metastasis of prostate cancer to the spine.

Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of using Nokyonggunbi-tang and other Korean medical treatments for a patient with consumptive disease and chronic fatigue. Methods: A 59-year-old female patient with fatigue, headache, dizziness, and neck pain due to consumptive disease and chronic fatigue was treated with herbal medicine (Nokyonggunbi-tang), together with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping, and chuna manual therapy, for 22 days. The treatment effects on the pain were evaluated using the scores for the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5d) Scale, Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Results: Following treatment, the patient showed a decrease in the FSS, NDI, and NRS scores and an improvement in the EQ-5d score. Conclusions: Nokyonggunbi-tang and Korean medical treatment significantly improved fatigue symptoms in a patient with no substrate disease.

Objectives The purpose of this review is to analyze the trends of Korean medicine treatment for trigger finger. Methods Clinical papers using Korean medicine to treat trigger finger were searched in five online databases-Koreanstudies Information Service System, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, ScienceON, Research Information Sharing Service, and PubMed. Nine studies were selected, and we analyzed their characteristics according to the author, year, number/gender/age of patients, duration of disease, duration of treatment, intervention method, measurement methods, and results. Results Seven case report studies, one prospective observational study, and one randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected in online databases, and there were no review studies. The most frequently used therapies were pharmacopuncture and acupuncture treatment. visual analogue scale, Quinnell's classification of triggering, was frequently used for measurement methods. All nine studies had therapeutic effects. Conclusions We reviewed studies of Korean medicine treatments for trigger finger, in this study. However, there are limitations that seven of the nine selected papers were case papers, and the number of papers was small. This paper suggests that a higher level of research and more studies on Korean medicine treatments of trigger finger need to be conducted.

Objective: This study was performed to report on the effects of traditional Korean Medicine as a treatment for a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, with lower limb pain as the chief complaint. Methods: We treated this patient with traditional Korean medicine and measured symptom severity using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) as well as measuring the length of the patient's self-exercising time. Results: After about 7 weeks of treatment, most pathological symptoms had decreased. There was a gradual decline in the VAS and a gradual increase in the length of the self-exercising time. Although there was an increase in the ODI scale during the first 2 weeks, it eventually showed a decline in the rest of the period. Conclusions: Traditional Korean medicine can be a solution for the patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease suffering from peripheral neurological symptoms.

Objective: This study examined a case in which insomnia and pain due to herniated intervertebral disks were improved by treatment with an oriental herbal and the administration of Uhwangchungsim-won. Case Summary: Three patients with insomnia diagnosed with herniated intervertebral disks were treated with a series of Korean medical therapies, including the herbal medication Uhwangchungsim-won, acupuncture, herbal acupuncture, and physical therapy. We used the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) to measure subjective sleep states and the European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5d) Scale to evaluate the therapeutic effect. Following treatment, subjective sleep states and the overall scores for pain had improved. Conclusion: The results indicate that Korean medical therapies with Uhwangchungsim-won have beneficial effects on insomnia for patients with herniated intervertebral disks.
