  • In the meantime, the study of traditional and contemporary house had been produced so many achievements in korea, but modern house is yet to be solved, Accordingly, It is necessary to develop and present the basic research data in order to build up an objective study for urban house in the modern age(1910-1945), Following to a study on the foreigner's house in grid-type settlement of Open Ports, in this research is to investigate and analyze modern houses of urban areas in korean inland, and then clarify types and changes of them. In the first year($1995{\sim}96$), the modern houses of Central Inland Districts(arrounding river Kumgang)-Kunsan kanggyong Puyo Kongju Pugang Chongju were investigated by the layout of room, the construction and materials, the design and style, etc. In the second year($1996{\sim}97$), the modern houses of Open Market(開市場)-Seoul Taegu Kwangju Taejon Chonju were conducted to investigate as above. The traditional house transformed by differentiation and addition of room(kan), the various types were respectively adopted for the korean reforming and western cultural house. In the layout of room, the types of plan were gradually concentrated from the single wings of korean traditional house. The korean traditional house was later improved through the introduction of entrance, corridor, and internal toilet/bathroom. But the korean under-floor heating system(andal) and a series of three rooms had been entirely maintained, composed of master bedroom/living room(daechung)/room. And the traditional town house with shop and storage, being built closely to each other and walled up both sides, it had taken gradually the extensive characteristics in itself. By the displacement of shop/dwelling/ storage. the various types were respectively adopted for the separated, multi-storied, and complex type. The type of them was gradually changed to the narrow and linear form. And so with the stockpile of fundamental datas about modern houses in korean urban areas, we expect these results contribute to the knowledge of the spatial characteristics of urban house at present which are required to the understanding of transition as well as types.

  • Cities developed by prosperity of industrial activities are inflated due to the rapid influx of the urban population. In the process, their structure was reorganized with overall urban redevelopment methods. As the a results from the propulsion of overall redevelopment plan, the city environment exposed uniform urban landscapes, absence of sense of place for permanent abodes and other urban problems. At the beginning of the 21st century, people with introspections on the problems focused their attention on making their places attractive using their place's unique identity so that people could feel like to stay there for a long time. They tried to regenerate buildings and cities while still maintaining spatial and historical context of their living environment. This study looks into the regeneration of Shikumen Linong House as a fine example of such a redevelopment in order to provide with a practical resource for urban redevelopment plans in Korea. The study in the first content examines the formation processes of the city of Shanghai as the gateway of the modern China. In the second, it looks into the formation processes and characteristics of Shikumen Linong House in the Xintiandi complex between 1920 and 1930's. In the end, it analyses spatial and formational characteristics and the applied dwelling regeneration method for the of Shikumen Linong House in the Xintiandi complex.

  • This study starts from the genealogical analysis of the urban public spaces through local history of Seoul which is significantly different from western countries. The analysis targets the discourse on the urban street, the basic unit of urban tissue and the settlement condition in urban life, which defines urban space-structure among the urban public spaces. And this research classifies and categorizes the value recognition and policy value occurred each period. Based on these, this research defines the progress levels of urban public design policy in Seoul as follows. Results Firstly, 1890's and 1900's was the period of development in commerce and industry, which caused congested and crowded streets. The open port policy allowed the experience of the foreign circumstance, and thus the identity of the urban streets and the value of symbolism come to realize among the society. During the Japanese colonization, urban streets put on modernized images through the urban remodeling out of the context according to the colonization policy. The brand-new values such as publicness and amenity are injected as well as modern regulations by system and authority. From Liberation to 1950's, it performed only street restoration as a repair from war with Japanese colonial system because of the political confusion and administrative vacuum. Finally, each period can be defined as follows. 1890's and 1900's can be defined as 'spontaneous finding the modernization' because urban street was intentionally transformed by the empire. Period of the Japanese colonization can be defined as 'the formation of modernized urban street concept and the compulsion of modernized regulation.' And period of from Liberation to 1950's, can be called as 'the absence of value recognition and maintenance of colonial system.' methodology.

  • A survey was made to ascertain the indigenous folkcrafts preserved in "Hwajeon" farms in deep mountain areas with the following findings: The folkcrafts which had been handed down from generation to generation of "Hwajeon" farms were very scarce presumably because of the dwellers' frequent moves from place to place owing to their insecure liveli-hood. Moreover, the surges of modern civilization and especially the recent New-community Movement could not have by-passed the "Hwajeon" areas; nowadays, the modernization surge has all but extinguished the folkcrafts that had come down from their forefathers. The recent government policy of farm community electricalization has further helped to transform these "Hwajeon" hamlets into the modernized communities. However, in the isolated hamlets rooted deep in the trackless mountains, we can still, though very rarely, find the folklore and folkcrafts closely associated with the inhabitants' livelihood, through which we can deepen our understanding about their versatile adaptability to the desolate environment.

  • Minimal architecture is generally expressed in a simple and pure form, this characteristic of minimal architecture was first introduced by the architect, Mies Van der Roche, in the beginning of 20th century. The objective of this study is to identify wether minimal architecture is just a reappearance of the beginning of 20th century's modern architecture or a suitable form for contemporary aesthetics. As a result, it can be concluded that minimal architecture is based on human emotion and one's experienced perception which is very different from the modern architecture which is more focused on functionality and mechanical esthetics. Minimal architecture uses two systems which are multi-sensual perception and conceptual perception; however, it focuses more on conceptual perception which is also used in comtemporary architecture. In conclusion, simplicity is just one of the necessary conditions which is not sufficient enough to represent minimal architecture.

  • The Chos$\hat{o}$n society witnessed internal unrest that culminated in popular uprisings during the years of 1700~1870, and this circumstances in Korean society offered a good opportunity to reorganize the relationship between production and society. However, it is not clear whether this pointed toward a modern capitalist society. Nevertheless, Korean society and agriculture developed under various difficult circumstances. In the view of the increase of land productivity and population during this period. Despite such tribulations, alter WWII the country underwent rapid industrialization, but it is not clear how lar the historical experience aided this development. The educational investment which builds upon the peasants' work morale and thriftiness certainly transforms the human capital and thus exerts important influence on the development of Korean modernization.

  • 'Bukpo' is called 'Tongpo' or 'Balnaepo,' which respectively mean hemp fabric that goes into a small bamboo tube and women's table utensil 'bari' in Chosen. It is fine hemp fabric produced in Yukjin, Hamgyeong province. Korea has been divided into North and South since the Korean War in 1950. As it is hard to get information about Northern life style or their traditional technology, their hemp fabric production is also left unknown. This study demonstrates characteristics of the production of 'Bukpo' through "Ojuyeonmunjangjeonsango", the only document that marked about 'Bukpo' making process of the late Chosen dynasty. It aims to analyze the transition of the technique and the meaning by comparing the characteristics of the production of 'Bukpo' with the modern era's documents. In this process, I discovered that the hemp fabric production technique at 19th century shares some sort of similarities with that of Europe or Chinese Miao(hmong). But the hemp fabric production technique changed before the 20th century. The evolution of Northern hemp fabric production technique can be a good example to examine the context of the traditional craft technique.

  • This study is about the research of living environment in residential areas created by the land readjustment projects in the modern era, and recently lifted from Residential Environment Improvement district at the same time. The five criteria for evaluating the residential area are safety, health, convenience, comfort, and sustainability. The level of resident satisfaction in general is as follows. [completely dissatisfy as 5.30%, dissatisfy as 16.29%, neutral as 49.62%, satisfy as 16.29% and completely satisfy as 6.82%]. The results of the five survey items on the residential areas show that residents are aware of the area not as an old residential area to be demolished, but as a comparatively excellent residential area, namely very different results from the designation criteria of the redevelopment area designated by the Urban and Residential Environment Improvement Act. If the road conditions and the deterioration of the buildings are judged to be designated as the redevelopment area and to be removed these settlements, the residential areas with social sustainability could demolished. Based on this study, it is necessary to conduct the research to find out the reason for deriving the results of each evaluation item in the succeeding study. These studies are needed to rediscover, to develop and manage the value of many old residential areas scattered in the city centers of local areas.

  • The study of the modern age period folk house is still insufficient in the Korean folk house study. The study subject had a tendency towards mainly on the plan in the field of the traditional folk house which had been studied relatively lively. We were going to grasp the formation and the actual situation of the folk house in this paper targeting at Yeosu city where the folk houses were left relatively a lot. Specifically, we examined it how the composition and dimensions of timber framework changed according to period. The division of period from before 1910 to the 1960s classified it at 4 periods on the basis of the sociocultural change. However, as a result of investigation analysis, the change of the composition and dimensions of timber framework was classified at 3 periods not 4 periods. The division of 3 periods is "traditional era", "modern age 1", and "modern age 2" not "traditional era", "modern age", and "contemporary age". The folk house group came as a common name for folk house without doing the division of period until now. There is a meaning in that this paper subdivided the period of the folk house group by the change of the timber framework technology. The timber framework is the effective index to investigate the actual condition because the change is difficult after building. Therefore, we examined it including the dimensions as well as the composition of timber framework in this paper comprehensively and systematically.

  • This study is to investigate the recurrence possibility of consecutive dry years such as the long dry period around 1900 in the annual rainfall data at Seoul station. The truncation levels, as the criterion for the dry years, are decided such as to make the occurrence of dry years follow the Poissonian distribution, which assures independent occurrence of dry years. For the truncation level of mean-0.5stdv, the occurrence of dry years is found to satisfy the Poissonian distribution weakly with 99% significance level, but for those of mean-0.75stdv and mean-stdv with 95% significance level. For these truncation levels, the long dry period around 1900 is divided into several short consecutive dry years. The Poisson process has then been applied to derive the occurrence probability of consecutive dry years. For the truncation level of mean-0.75stdv or below, the Poisson process was found to reproduce similar occurrence probabilities to the observed. Especially for the lowest truncation level used in the study (mean-stdv), we could see that the occurrence probability of consecutive dry years estimated for the data collected before the long dry period around 1900 was higher that those for the data collected after the long dry period, thus, it could be concluded that the possibility of long dry periods is decreasing recently.cently.
