  • This paper introduces the results of acoustic loads test conducted on the upper stage assembly of KSLV-I, which is the first Korea space launch vehicle. A launch vehicle and its payloads are subjected to severe acoustic pressure loading when they lift off and ascent during the transonic periods. Acoustic loadings are spreaded out broad frequncy-spectrum up to 10,000Hz. Acoustic loads are a primary source of structural random vibration of the upper stage and payloads. Therefore, in order to verify the structural integrity of the upper stage assembly of KSLV-I and the survivability of its components under severe random vibration environment, acoustic loads test is conducted in the high intensity acoustic chamber with 142dB (overall SPL). The results show the structural design and component random vibration specifications well meet with the environmental requirements.

  • The motor case for the KSLV-I KM is the first satellite launch vehicle ever to be developed by Korea to deliver the 100 kg class satellite into Earth's low orbit. This SLV is made of two stages, and the 2nd stage is made of solid rocket motor. The motor case of the KM is made of all composite materials except for the interface structures. Manufacturing process for the motor case such as insulation, filament winding for the motor case, fabrications for the interface structures will be discussed in this paper.

  • We are developing a compact ignition device that can provide a multi-ignition capability for an upper stage methane engine of a two staged small satellite launch vehicle. Firstly, the multi-ignition device is designed and built as an integral part of an additively manufactured mixing head. Secondly, the ignition device requires no separate high-pressure vessels to store ignition propellants as they are branched out from the main feed lines for the mixing head. We performed experiments at various levels, including igniter autonomous tests, thrust chamber ignition and combustion tests on the new compact ignition device which is integrated in the thrust chamber of one-tonf class liquid oxygen/liquid methane engine, and confirmed stable ignition performance.
