Increase in dental hygienists' competency and self-directed capacity after capstone design course on community dental hygiene (캡스톤 디자인 지역사회치위생학 수업이 치과위생사 역량 및 자기 주도력 증가에 미치는 효과)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to verify the effect on students' competency and self-directed capacity after a capstone design teaching method with community dental hygiene class. Methods: The study participants were 34 dental hygiene students taking a 4-year community dental hygiene course at a university located in City C. The research tool consisted of 52 questions on major competency and 20 questions on self-directed capacity. Results: After the capstone design class, overall dental hygienists' competency increased (p<0.05), and competencies of clinical dental hygiene and community health promotion showed a high increase (p<0.001). As a result of analyzing the increase in dental hygienists' competency according to self-directed learning ability, the group with low self-directed capacity showed high improvement in clinical dental hygiene competency and community oral health promotion competency. Conclusions: This study confirmed that the capstone design course in community dental hygiene improved students' competency and self-directed capacity, and suggests that it is an excellent teaching method for training competencies required for future society.

Factors affecting the number of citations in papers published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene (한국치위생학회지 게재논문의 피인용수에 영향을 미친 요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that affected the number of citations for articles published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene based on previous studies. Methods: Information on papers including the number of citations was collected using a web crawling technique. The effect of the number of author keywords, the number of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) keywords, MeSH match rate, abstract word count and keyword-abstract ratio on the number of citations was analyzed by multiple regression analysis. Results: The use of the MeSH keyword did not have a significant effect on the number of citations. Among the other factors, only the keyword-abstract ratio was statistically significant. Conclusions: Select a topic of constant interest in the field, write the title in detail using colons or asterisks if necessary, and do not repeat the words used in the title in keywords. Select specific keywords deeply related to the topic. In particular, choice words or phrases that are frequently used in the abstract. If the MeSH keyword selection contradicts the previous strategies, boldly give up the MeSH keyword.

The Study on Academic Definition and Developmental Direction of the Dental Hygiene Science in Korea (치위생학의 학문적 정의와 위상에 따른 발전 방향에 관한 연구)

  • It has passed 40 years since dental hygiene was introduced to Korea. At this time, We hereby demonstrate the findings from the survey on the academic definition and developmental direction of dental hygiene. This survey has been conducted on dental hygiene majoring students, dental clinic hygienists of health & medical care and related professors in the dental field. The findings show that there exists a big disparity in defining the academic scope of dental hygiene among students, clinical dental hygienists of health & medical care and university professors. Accordingly, we suggest that the academic scope of dental hygiene should be explained in a uniform definition. In addition, the results of this survey suggest that they feel that the status of dental hygiene is really behind other study fields, in view of such high response thereto. For development of dental hygiene study and enhancement of its social status, the joint professional study by private, government and scholars should be immediately promoted and a wide variety of programs for dental hygiene should be continuously implemented under the auspices of government and academic world.

Analysis of authors' key words published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene across 3 years (2016 to 2018) (한국치위생학회지 게재논문의 저자 키워드 분석(2016-2018년))

  • Objectives: This study aimed to identify authors' key words as published in recent articles in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene from 2016 to 2018. Methods: Authors' key words published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene were compared with MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms. We analyzed appearance frequencies of authors' key words via SPSS (Ver. 21.0). Results: A total of 1,259 key words and 315 articles were included in the analysis. The most frequently used key words were dental hygienist (40 times), oral health (27 times), dental hygienists (23 times), and elderly (14 times). One hundred and eighty-three articles (58.1%) were found, in which at least one key word matched the MeSH terms, and 132 articles (41.9%) were found in which key words did not match the MeSH terms. Two hundred and ninety-three headings (23.3%) of authors' key words published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene completely matched the MeSH terms. Conclusions: Researchers should be educated in the use of authors' key words to accomplish quality improvements.

Validity assessment for competency development in clinical dental hygiene education based on dental hygiene process of care (치위생과정에 기반한 임상치위생학 교육과정 역량 개발을 위한 타당도 평가)

  • Objectives: Before implementing a competency-based clinical dental hygiene curriculum, it is essential to establish competency development as a foundational educational objective. Therefore, this study aimed to develop the competency of clinical dental hygiene with secured validity using the Delphi survey method. Methods: Dental hygiene competencies were categorized within the dental hygiene process stages, and questions were formulated accordingly. A Delphi survey involving ten qualified experts was conducted to refine the final items based on their review opinions. Results: The expert Delphi survey confirmed that all items met stability criteria, with CVI values of 0.80 or higher, CVR values of 0.60 or higher, and a CV coefficient of variation of 0.5 or less. In total, 42 items were derived. Conclusions: Clinical dental hygiene can contribute to developing specialized dental hygienists if the competencies derived from this study are well applied to the standardized curriculum and operations.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze in depth the standardized Clinical dental hygiene curriculum of the Fones School in the United States. We investigated the clinical dental hygiene curriculum in 2015~2016 including title, credit, hours, contents, goals, competencies, and evaluation. We obtained the course syllabus and data related to each subject, for each grade, from the professors and students at the university. The goals and competencies, of the clinical dental hygiene program, which were based on the goals of the Fones School and the mission of the University of Bridgeport, were developed in accordance with the dental hygienist practice standards proposed by the American Dental Hygienists Association. The curriculum consisted of theory to teach proper dental hygiene care procedures and incorporated practical exercises that modeled an actual clinical setting. The students had to document the procedures performed for each client/patient and improve their clinical competency through discussion with the professors. Dental hygiene care should be provided for children, adolescents, adults, elderly, and patients, which includes patients with moderate or severe periodontal status. Students were evaluated by a paper test or case study presentation and their clinical evaluation was based on their clinical competency. In particular, professors evaluated students on a rotational basis, so they could evaluate the level of achievement of clinical competency of all students and find ways to improve any weaknesses. Therefore, the current study suggested that clinical dental hygiene program in Korea could be improved if based on the curriculum of Fones School in the United States.

Current Status of Clinical Dental Hygiene Education Based on Dental Hygiene Process of Care (치위생과정에 근거를 둔 임상치위생학의 교육 실태)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational status of dental hygiene process of care and to provide foundation for introducing curriculums focused on it. Questionnaire (14 questions) on educational status of clinical dental hygiene based on dental hygiene process of care was distributed in 50 dental hygiene schools with full classes. Research was performed with structured questionnaires on the basis of previous literatures, and interview and email survey was conducted. Collected data were analyzed with Frequency analysis, Descriptive statistics, and Chi-square test using SPSS 12.0, and the results were as follows. The average student to clinical dental hygiene faculty ratio of 22 to one regardless of year of curriculum. Sixty two point five percent of dental hygiene school reported having a curriculum about comprehensive dental hygiene process. Regarding the distribution of lecture and practical curriculums, they were less focused on dental hygiene diagnosis (68.8%), planning (65.6%) and evaluation (68.8%) than on assessment and implementation. Just over half (56.7%) reported having education of dental hygiene process of care during the course of curriculum. In conclusion, it is most desirable to provide integrated education based on dental hygiene process of care by reinforcing dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, and evaluation step.

Trend analysis of articles published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene, from 2016 to 2018 (한국치위생학회지 게재논문 분석을 통한 치위생학 연구 동향 탐구(2016년~2018년))

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to analyze papers published in the Journal of Korean Society of Dental Hygiene (JKSDH) and to identify the current state of dental hygiene research and recommend directions for future research. Methods: A total of 315 articles published between 2016 to 2018 were reviewed using analysis criteria. Results: The number of grant research and experimental studies during 2016-2018 was higher than that before 2015. Quantitative studies were dominant and oral health was the most common research topics. The number of published papers, the proportion of reported reliability of instrument studies, reported ethical consideration and studies that described criteria for sample size had increased. The most common sampling of quantitative studies were convenient sampling and questionnaire and big data of data collection methods were the most. Conclusions: Findings of this study indicate that the recent trends in dental hygiene research and the direction of dental hygiene research and will improve the quality of papers and promote the reputation of JKSDH as an international journal.
