  • China Coastal Waters(CCW) usually appeared from June through October every years, and it appeared very strong in August. In the harmonic analysis for Sea level anomaly (SLA), the annual amplitude of the eastern part (8~9.5cm) in Jeju Island was lower than those of the western part (over 13cm). In the harmonic analysis for Sea Surface Temperature (SST), the annual amplitude of the eastern part($7{\sim}8.5^{\circ}C$) in Jeju Island was lower than those of the western part($5.5{\sim}6^{\circ}C$). For the Power Spectrum Density (PSD), SLA and SST remarkablely peaked on the annual period, semi-annual period and 3-monthly period. In summer and autumn, SLA of 1996 to 1999 was high in comparison to other years, and then it should be considered that the appearance of CCW was closely related to heavy rainfalls. The path of CCW formed this boundary of temperature between the yellow sea and the east china sea.

  • A study on the larval fish assemblage around the front area was conducted in the Korea Strait in August, 1993. The front was found in the shelf break located in $35{\sim}36^{\circ}N$. A total of 125 species were found in the study area. Of these Engraulis japonicus was the most dominant species comprising 84.3% of the total fish larvae collected and followed by Maurolicus muelleri accounting for 7.7%. Gobiidae, Callionymidae and Pomacentridae showed higher frequency of occurrence. These five species can be divided into three groups. First group was comprised in the larval fish species such as E. japonicus and Callionymidae which were found in the whole study area. The second group was comprised of Gobiidae and Pomacentridae which were found in the warm area located in the southern part of the front area. The other species was M. muelleri found in the cold area located in the northern part of the front area including the front area. The assemblage, geological distribution and body length composition of the fish larvae in the Korea Strait would be mainly determined by the spawning ecology of the fishes, and the geological distribution and structure of the front which is formed in the ocean boundary between the Tsushima Current and the East Sea Cold Water.

  • Environmental problems and safety problems in coastal area is one of the most important factors for designing coastal structures and maintaining facilities in coastal zone. And thus study on Wave transformation around coastal area is very important to develope a new port or on industrial area. Delft 3D-WAVE is applied to Ulsan new port area and the culculated results are analysed and compared with measured data Delft 3D-wave module is based on SWAN model which considers wave shoaling and refraction for irregular wave. This module also covers wind effect, bottom friction. white-capping and wave breaking effect. The results of this study show a good agreement with measured data and thus Delft 3D-WAVE module can be applied to simulate irregular wave transformation in coastal area.

  • Seawater quality was investigated each month at 30 stations near Tongyeong, South Korea, to provide data for the effective use of coastal fisheries and the reduction of economic damage to marine products. Water temperature was lowest in January and highest at the end of August. Neither extremely low water temperature below $4^{\circ}C$ nor fish damage caused by low water temperature was observed. Salinity ranged from 24.04 to 34.39 psu in the surface layer and from 29.92 to 34.39 psu in the bottom layer. The minimum salinity, attributable to rainfall events, was observed in July; salinity increased to high of about 34 psu in November. Low dissolved oxygen (DO), below 4 mg/L, was observed at Wenmun and Buksin Bays during May to October. Concentrations of $NO_2$-N, $NO_3$-N, and $PO_4$-P were low from March to September and high from October to February. Transparency was 6 m on average and was high in Wenmun Bay. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and chlorophyll a (Chl. a) were high during summer, when the water temperature was high. With cluster analysis based on environment factors related to water quality, the study area could be divided into three main sea areas: Buksin Bay, coastal seawater, and offshore seawater. Buksin Bay was characterized by low salinity, high DO and Chl. a, and high transparency in the surface layer and by low DO and high $NH_4$-N in the bottom layer. Offshore seawater had high salinity and $NO_3$-N and low Chl. a concentration. In summer season that oyster need lots of phytoplankton, $NO_3$-N and Chl. a concentrations at this study area were low compare to Gwangy-ang and Gamak Bays. In winter, a sea squirt swallow much more than other season, the Chl. a concentrations were also low than Gwangyang and Gamak Bays.

  • The absolute clay mineral compositions and regional distribution of the 131 bulk marine surface sediments around the Jeju Island was compared to their relative compositions and distribution using quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Average absolute clay mineral composition is illite 15.3% (0.5~40.5%), chlorite 2.6% (0~7.9%), and kaolinite 1% (0~5.6%). Total contents of the clay minerals are very high in the South Sea of Korea, northwestern part and southern offshore of Jeju Island. The average relative composition is illite 70.9% (16.7~89%), chlorite 21.5% (8.4~68.5%), and kaolinite 7.6% (0~29.3%). Relative illite contents are high in the northwestern and southeastern part of study area, and southern part of Jeju Island. Chlorite contents are high in the eastern part of study area and western part of Jeju Island. Kaolinite contents are high in the western and southern part of Jeju Island, and southern offshore of Jeju Isand. Absolute Distribution patterns are very similar to those of fine-grained (from clay to silt) sediment, whereas relative distribution patterns do not show any relationship with those of fine-grained sediment.

  • A number of hydrographic studies and some recent current measurements around Chejudo Island suggest an existence of a clockwise residual flow in the west and north coasts of the island all the year round. On the eastern side of the island the Tsushinma Current flows northward and northeastward. The contribution of tide-induced residual currents to the observed residual. flow around the island was examined here through numerical solution of the two-dimensional nonlinear shallow-water equations. The calculated tide-induced residual currents show a clockwise circulation around the island. Significant residuals of 2-4cms$\^$-1/are confined over sloping bottom topography around t he island and the far-field residuals are negligibly small. The inclusion of a permanent current into the model was also attempted in order to see the effects of the Tsushima Current system on the residual circulation around the is land. It was found that combined effects of tide-induced residuals and the permanent current field associatedwith the Tsushima Current explain qualitatively not only the observed clock wise residuals in the west and north coasts but also the northward flow on the eastern side of the island.
