This paper analyzes the effects of trade on demand for labor of trading firms in Korea. We apply system GMM methodology to estimate the effects of imports and exports on employment of Korean manufacturing firms using firm-level data from the Survey of Business Activities of Statistics Korea between 2006 and 2014. According to our estimated results, for firms with high-productivity, exports have a positive and significant effect on the labor demand, while other firms do not show any such significant effects. Furthermore, our results show that offshoring mitigates the positive effects of exports on employment, since tasks within the firms can be relocated abroad. On the other hand, an increase in imports reduces demand for labor because labor is replaced with low-priced imported inputs. Also, when firms partake in global outsourcing, the negative effects of imports are mitigated as those firms expand their production by enhancing their efficiency in the process of offshoring. Therefore, our results suggest that it is important to consider heterogeneous firm productivity as well as offshoring in analyzing the effect of trade on labor demand of firms.

This study examines the possibility of implementing the technology financing for export-import based small and medium sized enterprises. Our sample consists of 2,753 small and medium sized enterprises, receiving financial support from the Export-Import Bank of Korea for the period of 2011-2013. We find that only 400(200) firms reserve IPs(patents) annually. Given that IPs are likely to concentrate on manufacturer industries such as electronic components, computers, video, sound and communication equipment manufacturing(KSIC 26), other machinery and equipment manufacturing(KSIC 29), manufacture of motor vehicles and trailers(KSIC 31). We also find that the total assets, sales and R&D expenses of IP holding companies greatly exceeds those of companies without IPs. In addition, IP holding companies' liquidity seems slight edge and the leverage ratio is somewhat lower. However, profitability ratios of IP holding companies are rather than harsh or similar level. 20~30% of IP holding firms show very week credit scores, implying that banks' default risk is expected to be significant.

2015년 세계 건설시장 규모는 전년대비 4% 성장한 8.8조달러에 달할 것으로 예상된다. 이후 연평균 4%씩 성장해 2018년에는 세계 건설시장 규모가 10조달러를 넘어설 것으로 전망된다. 지역별로는 아시아 개도국이 두드러진 성장을 보일 것으로 예상되는 가운데 유로존도 회복세를 나타낼 전망이다. 여기서는 한국수출입은행의 '세계 건설시장 동향 및 시사점' 보고서를 요약해 게재한다.

This study is about whether the new Project Finance scheme called "Asset Backed Short Term Bond(ABSTB)" with Project Finance Guarantee Cover provided by Korean Exim Bank(KEXIM) is an appropriate and valid financing structure, through close examinations on domestic and overseas IPP case studies. This study clearly indicates that (i) the interest rate of ABSTB with KEXIM's Project Finance Guarantee is relatively more competitive than the interest rate of other ABSTB guaranteed by EPC Companies (ii) the lower credit rated EPC companies make higher ROE(Return on Equity) through this financing structure. Lastly, Korean EPC Companies can secure profitability through this innovative financing scheme which will also lead to winning more power plant Contracts and become globally competitive.
