오늘날 인터넷과 정보기술의 발전은 정보입수 채널을 다양화시킴에 따라 과거 대학도서관이 누렸던 대학 내 정보제공자로서의 독점적 위치를 상실하도록 만들었다. 이러한 새로운 환경은 대학도서관의 역할에 있어서 새로운 패러다임을 요구하게 되었다. 따라서 대학도서관은 도서관을 둘러싼 모든 환경의 변화를 감지하고 그에 대처하는 능력을 갖출 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 Sense Making, Knowledge Creation, Decision Making, Holistic 등 경쟁정보(Competitive Intelligence) 관점에서의 정보 이용형태에 초점을 맞추어 대학도서관을 분석하고, 그에 따라 새로운 모델을 제시하고자 한다.

사회적 기구로서 도서관은 그 사회의 필요에 의해 생겨났으며 그 사회의 변화에 일조함으로 사회화 과정인 매스커뮤니케이션의 한 체계를 구성하고 있다. 본 연구는 도서관과 사회의 관계를 매스커뮤니케이션의 관점에서 이해하기 위하여 도서관과 매스커뮤니케이션의 이론적 관계를 살펴보고, 설문조사를 통하여 도서관의 사회적 역할에 대한 분석을 한 뒤, 이를 바탕으로 도서관이 사회적 역할을 다할 수 있는 방안을 찾아봄으로서 도서관과 사회와의 관계를 이해ㆍ증진시키는 데 그 목적이 있다.

디지털 도서관은 기존 도서관과 달리 시간과 공간에 구애받지 않고 원하는 정보를 보다 효율적으로 획득할 수 있도록 정보 입력/저장/출력, 정보 저작권 보호, 정보 전달 등의 핵심 기능을 제공한다. 그런데 실세계의 정보는 멀티미디어 정보이므로 디지털 도서관이 이를 지원하기 위해서는 각 핵심기능이 확장되어야 하므로, 현존하는 디지털 멀티미디어 도서관은 각 기능의 멀티미디어 지원 수준에 따라 다양하게 나눌 수 있다. 구축 사례를 중심으로 디지털 멀티미디어 도서관의 현황을 살펴보고 이상적인 디지털 멀티미디어 도서관이 갖추어야 할 필수 기능을 정의하고 이를 토대로 나아갈 방향을 제시한다.

20세기의 도서관은 확산된 인터넷의 보급으로 대출형 도서관의 연장선상에서 이용자의 요구에 따라 관종이나 지역간 협력을 통한 네트워크 운영으로의 도약을 꾀하고 있다. 이후, 도서관의 발전단계는 다양한 서비스를 즐기며 오랜 시간을 관내에 머무를 수 있는 체재형(滯在型)도서관이라고 표방되고 있다. 이는 도서관이 오랜 시간 머물며 다양한 활동이 가능한 공간으로 거듭나기를 바라는 사회적, 시대적 요청에 의한 결과라 할 수 있을 것이다. 이를 위하여 유니버설(universal) 디자인과 에콜로지(ecology) 디자인의 개념을 수용한 환경 친화적 도서관 건축에 대한 사안(私案)들을 제시하고자 한다.

이용자의 정보요구 변화와 이용자 중심의 서비스로 전환 그리고 도서관의 심화된 경쟁 등의 도서관을 둘러싼 환경의 변화는 이용자 기대의 변화와 도서관 경영이 변화를 가져왔다. 따라서 이용자에 대한 관심의 증가와 그들의 요구를 파악하기 위한 노력이 도서관 경영에 필요하게 되었으며, 도서관 품질 평가에 있어 수치적인 측면에서 탈피하여 고객 중심의 품질 평가로의 전환이 필요하게 되었다. 본 연구는 서비스 품질 측정에 관한 다수 이론들과 모형을 정리하여 도서관 서비스 품질을 측정하는 새로운 도구를 제시해 보고자 한다.

도서관 품질 평가를 위한 척도로 개발된 라이브퀼 플러스(LibQUAL+)를 국내 대학도서관에 적용하여 분석을 시도하였다. 이용자 집단별(신분, 연령, 성별, 전공, 도서관 방문횟수, 도서관 홈페이지 접속 횟수) 사전 기대와 실제 인식 사이의 갭을 평가하고 그 원인을 분석하였다. 평가 후 실제 도서관 경영에 필요한 서비스 개선방안을 마련하고 이용자의 인식 향상 및 요구사항에 대처하기 위한 활동과 책무를 밝힘으로써 도서관 서비스 품질 평가를 수행하고, 그 방안을 마련하였다.

대학도서관의 정보기술 환경과 이용자의 정보기술 이용능력이 도서관 이용행태에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 규명하고자 한다. 본 연구는 독립변인으로 선정된 도서관 집단간의 비교와 이용자 집단간의 비교를 통한 비교실험을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 대학도서관의 정보기술 환경에 따른 도서관 정보기술 이용행태는 대체적으로 차이가 없으며 개인의 정보기술 이용능력에 따른 도서관 정보기술 이용행태는 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Public library statistics can be a useful tool for measuring public library resources and services and also supporting management process including planning and policy development. This study attempts to present an advanced national public library statistics system to report accurate description of public library situation. Main user groups and useful areas of public library statistics were identified through literature review, and the emerging trends of public library statistics systems at the national and international levels were summarized. Current public library statistics system, annually collected and published by the Korean Library Association, was analyzed and ways for the improvement were suggested particularly in the aspects of validity, reliability, consistency, currency, and utility.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the state library services in the United States in order to consider what services are needed for regional libraries in Korea. The data were collected from library statistics and library web pages. The analyses particularly focused on examining the residental service and library service of state libraries. The analyses revealed that the state libraries provide funds, services, and training to local libraries, but the service levels are varied among states. State libraries provide state historical information and genealogy information to residential users, and focus on the information needs for handicapped people. Based upon the analysis of U.S. state libraries, Korea regional libraries would provide services different from local public libraries. Also, regional libraries would be operated based upon the regional characteristics.

The purpose of this study is to suggest IC concepts and some basic ideas of construction of public library's application model based of NDL IC Model. In order to successful introduction and construction of IC in public library, it should be preceded that some ideas of IC space concepts and constructual direction, physical space and facilities plan and gradual progress that introduce to the IC concepts.
