  • The basic purpose of grounding is for human safety and normal operation of system related to electrical shock hazard by faults of electrical equipments. A grounding electrode is defined as a conducting element that connects electrical systems and/or equipment to the earth. The lowest possible resistance connection to the earth is sought from the grounding electrode. The grounding electrode is the foundation of the electrical safety system. The resistance to ground of vertical electrodes buried in the two deference soil structures has been analyzed for a length of electrodes and soil parameters. The equation of ground resistance of vertical electrodes are Tagg's equation for uniform soil models, and modified equation of Dwight equation for two-layer soil model. In this paper, compared with results of two equations are calculated values of vertical electrode in uniform and two-layer soil models.

  • Lightning is the discharging of high-voltage charged cells within clouds to earth other or to the earth. Lightning protection grounding is essential for the protection of buildings, distribution lines, and electrical equipment from lightning surges. Equipment grounding is for the purpose of controlling the voltage to earth within predictable limits. This paper investigates the effects of lightning arrester grounding resistance by analysing the neutral to earth voltages and arrester break down voltages when the lightning strike hits the distribution line. The case study was simulated numerically and graphically through the use of the EDSA software program.

  • The grounding systems provide a low resistance path for fault or normal currents into the earth. The material for reducing ground resistance is buried around the grounding electrode to increase its effective size of the electrode and thus to obtain low ground resistance. Increasing the contacting area with the grounding electrode is effective for lowering the ground resistance in soils. Using this idea the conductive expansion ground resistance reducing material was developed. In this paper experimental data has shown that the ground resistance reduction method using proposed material is superior to using a typically available commercial ground resistance reducing material.

  • This paper presents the comparison of the earth resistivity obtained from the measurements made with the three-electrode and four-electrode fall-of-potential techniques. The ${\rho}-a$ curve obtained from Wenner four-electrode method in undisturbed earth is in good agreement with the ${\rho}-l$ curve obtained from the three-electrode method based on the fall-of- potential method. However, The ${\rho}-a$ curve in disturbed earth with moisture and freezing is significantly different with the ${\rho}-l$ curve. The ${\rho}-a$ curve is considerably sensitive to the freezing and the moisture present in the earth surface compared to the ${\rho}-l$ curve. Thus to determine the actual earth resistivity, it is necessary to take into account the earth surface conditions when measuring the earth resistivity.

  • Nuclear power provides 30% of our country's power, which acts as one of the most important power sources. But on March 11, 2011, the earthquake that hit Northeast Japan with a 9.0 magnitude, known as the Fukushima Reactor Leak Incident has created fear in the public's mind that 'nuclear power is unstable'. The reason for such distrust are many but inaccurate reports of the incident by the media has added to the fear. This paper will analyze the contents of the media report of the heavy water leakage in reactor 3 at the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant on October 4, 1999 to discover the problematic areas and ascertain a more appropriate method of media coverage.

  • Wide use of non-linear loads such as personal computers, monitors, laser printers, variable speed drives, UPS systems and other electronic equipment have led to harmonics becoming #1 issue in the electrical industry today. Commercial and Industrial building power distribution systems, designed for the old, linear-style loads especially when found in high densities. Some common power system problems include overloaded neutral conductors, overheated distribution transfOlmers, high neutral-to-ground voltage, poor power factor and distortion of the voltage waveform supplying these loads. The power quality problems, particularly high voltage distortion, have been known to cause equipment downtime due to malfunctions and component failure.

  • In order to design effectively the grounding system, it is very important to determine the optimum soil resistivity at the desired location of the connection to earth. This paper deals with the reasonable methods of measuring the soil resistivity where grounding electrodes are buried. The soil resistivity at three test sites with different resistivity of soil were measured as functions of the spacing between the test probes in the Wenner's four-point method and the length of test ground rod in the three-point method. In the case of the three-point method, the length of test ground rod of 2-10[m] in length was appropriate in two-layered soil structure. In the length range of 2-10[m], the results measured by the three-point method using the test ground rod with the length corresponding to the spacing between the test probes of the Wenner's four-point method are in good agreement with the data obtained from the Wenner's four-point method.

  • Grounding system insures a reference potential point for electric devices and also provides a low impedance path for fault currents or transient currents in the earth. The ground impedance as function of frequency is necessary for determining its performance since fault currents could contain a wide range of frequencies. In this paper, the grounding resistance, grounding impedance and transient grounding impedance are measured by using 3-point fall-of-potential method in order to analyse grounding characteristics of the stainless-steel plate grounding electrode. An equivalent transfer function model of the grounding impedance and transient grounding impedance are identified from the measured values by using ARMA method and evaluated by comparing conventional grounding impedances.

  • This study analyzed the resistivity characteristic of model block to make the good use of structure grounding and substitution grounding electrode base of building. After making the model block of mortar and concrete block, it measured resistivity in hydrous condition and dry condition and compared with the blocks that is mixed earth resistance lowering agent to decrease resistivity. The resistance value of block accepted much influence by block resistivity. When the block resistivity was same or similar value, the value of soil resistivity has occurred as different as the value of grounding resistance.
