This paper presents a dynamic crack propagation algorithm based on the Moving Least Squares(MLS) difference method. The derivative approximation for the MLS difference method is derived by Taylor expansion and moving least squares procedure. The method can analyze dynamic crack problems using only node model, which is completely free from the constraint of grid or mesh structure. The dynamic equilibrium equation is integrated by the Newmark method. When a crack propagates, the MLS difference method does not need the reconstruction of mode model at every time step, instead, partial revision of nodal arrangement near the new crack tip is carried out. A crack is modeled by the visibility criterion and dynamic energy release rate is evaluated to decide the onset of crack growth together with the corresponding growth angle. Mode I and mixed mode crack propagation problems are numerically simulated and the accuracy and stability of the proposed algorithm are successfully verified through the comparison with the analytical solutions and the Element-Free Galerkin method results.

Traffic load comprise primary input to pavement design causing pavement damage. therefore it should be proceeded suitable traffic load distribution modeling for pavement design and analysis. Traffic load have been represented by equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) which convert mixed traffic stream into one value for design purposes. But there are some limit to apply ESALs to other roads because it is empirical value developed as part of the original AASHO(American Association of State Highway Officials) road test. There have been many efforts to solve these problems. Several leading country have implemented M-E(Mechanistic-Empirical) design procedures based on mechanical concept. As a result, they established traffic load quantification method using load distribution model known as Axle Load Spectra. This paper details Axle Load Spectra and presents axle load distribution model based on normal mixture distribution function using truck load data collected by WIM system installed in national highway. Axle load spectra and axle load distribution model presented in this paper could be useful for basic data when making traffic load quantification plan for pavement design, overweight vehicle permit plan and pavement maintenance cost plan.

Seismic load is distributed to modes of a structure through the modal participation factor(MPF). The modal participation factor is essential to analyze structural response under earthquake load. MPF of a real structure differs from that of analytical mathematical model due to the error induced from analytical assumptions and during the construction. In this study, an identification method is proposed to calculate the 1st MPF of real structure based on $H^{\infty}$ optimal model reduction. The MPF is obtained from the relationship between observability and controllability matrices realized from system identification and those of a prototype 2-degree state space model. The proposed method is verified thorough numerical examples.
Active earth pressure formula, which can consider the effects of ground surface inclination, inclination of inside retaining wall face, wall friction, line load, uniform load, soil cohesion and adhesion, was derived based on the force equilibrium principle. In order to verify the accuracy of this proposed formula, the calculated active earth pressures by the proposed formula were compared with those of graphical solutions. Also, the active earth pressures determined by the proposed formula were compared with those by Coulomb's, Rankine's and Mazindrani's solution under specific conditions. The results matched quite well not only with the graphical solutions but also with those by three other methods. Also, the trend of active earth pressures by the proposed formula were corresponded with results of experimental study by Fang, et al. It can be concluded that this generalized formula not only can overcome the limitations of Rankine's, Coulomb's and Mazindrani's active earth pressure formula but also can consider the external loading conditions.

Aerodynamic influence coefficient linearly relates pressure with downwash in panel method for load analysis in which the viscosity of a flow is ignored and the compressibility cannot be taken into account in transonic region. Since the planform of an aerodynamic surface determines the coefficient, the panel method has a limit to the analysis of low Reynolds number flow. The accuracy of the pressure distribution can be improved by a direct correction to the pressure or a correction to the downwash, which is considered the change of camber or thickness, using the aerodynamic coefficients from wind tunnel test as constraints. A premultiplying correction method as well as a postmultiplying correction method is applied to a micro air vehicle to provide more accurate aerodynamic pressure for trim and load analyses. Theoretical aerodynamic pressure is obtained from the panel method. Correction factor matrix and correct pressure coefficient are computed for the conditions with two constraints in addition to single constraint. The postmultiplying correction method gives a better improvement in pressure distribution on micro air vehicle due to the flow characteristics on it.
The evaluation of the system reliability is generally quite difficult and costly as the structure becomes large and complex, especially when it is subjected to multiple time varying loads, and for redundant structures which have many possible modes of failur, e.g., system collapse through the formation of plastic hinge mechanisms. In reality most loadings acting on the structures are random in intensity as well as in occurrence time and duration. To include the load variability in time, the loads are described in terms of stochastic processes. Based on a tri-modal upper bound, a point estimate for the system reliability has been developed for more accuracy without extensive computational effort. This tri-modal point estimate also ensures the continuity of the system reliability function, which is a necessary condition in many nonlinear programming techniques. In addition, the Load Coincidence method, by which the combined effect of time varying loads are taken into account, has been modified to suitable for cases with an always-on load.
In this paper, an experimental study have been many studies on the joints of steel structure, for it has great influences on the safety of structures. Research on block shear rupture of the joint receiving pure tension have been done in foreign countries, but not in Korea. This study focuses on the propriety of block shear design code, according to limited state design criteria of steel structures recently established in Korea, by an experiment on the joint of angle tension members. The methods of this study were to compare other study results on block shear rupture mode and ultimate capacity, and to evaluate the propriety of the criteria design code. The result is that tension yield shear ruptures and shear yield tension ruptures happened at the joint, and the experimental rupture load was 15% higher than the capacity entered in the criteria design code. We conclude that it is necessary to revaluate the block shear design code presented by many studies on the limited state design criteria of steel structures.
An efficient and accurate hybrid reliability analysis method is proposed in this paper to quantify the risk of an axially loaded single pile considering pile-soil interaction behavior and uncertainties in various design variables. The proposed method intelligently integrates the concepts of the response surface method, the finite difference method, the first-order reliability method, and the iterative linear interpolation scheme. The load transfer method is incorporated into the finite difference method for the deterministic analysis of a single pile-soil system. The uncertainties associated with load conditions, material and section properties of a pile and soil properties are explicitly considered. The risk corresponding to both serviceability limit state and strength limit state of the pile and soil is estimated. Applicability, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method in the safety assessment of a realistic pile-soil system subjected to axial loads are verified by comparing it with the results of the Monte Carlo simulation technique.

Blast cleaning has been applied in steel bridges for cleaning forged surface and increasing adhesive property of applied coating systems. Blasting is the operation of cleaning or preparing a surface by forcible propelling a stream of abrasive metals against it. Blast cleaning may improve surface geometry and induce compressive residual stress, and eventually may increase fatigue life of weld joints. In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out on three types of non-load-carrying fillet welded cruciform joints, as-welded joints, blast-treated joints, and stress-relieved joints after blasting, in order to investigate effect of blast cleaning on fatigue behavior of the weld joints. By Blast cleaning, the weld toe radius was increased by 29% and compressive residual stress was induced near weld toes. Blast cleaning increased fatigue life and fatigue endurance limit of the weld joints. When the applied stress ranges decreased, the increment in fatigue life became larger. About a 150% increase in fatigue limit could be realized by using blast cleaning.

Design criteria for limit state design of underground structures have already been published overseas, and research has been conducted to revise the design method in Korea. In order to estimate the probability of failure under seismic load, the probability variable should be considered in the reliability analysis. In this study, the failure probability of the existing shield tunnel segment lining design was calculated by applying the coefficient of variation (COV) for the earth pressure and the seismic load effect in consideration of the statistical characteristics of the domestic ground properties. Based on the results of calculating the reliability index (β) from the calculated probability of failure and analyzing the reliability index according to the change in the load factor and the results of domestic and foreign research, the target reliability index (βT) during earthquakes of shield tunnel segment lining is analyzed to be "2.3", it was proposed as the target reliability index for the design of the limit state under seismic load.
