An Analytical Evaluation of Fire and Explosion Characteristics of Ethylene (에틸렌의 화재 및 폭발 특성치의 분석적 평가)

  • Explosion limit and autoignition temperature are the major properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosion limit and autoignition temperature for safe handling of ethylene were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of ethylene recommended 2.6vol% and 36vol%, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of ethylene with ignition sources recommended $420^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated crucible furnace (the whole surface heating) and recommended about $800^{\circ}C$ in the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence and the pressure dependence of the lower explosion limits for ethylene are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • The thermochemical parameters for safe handling, storage, transport, operation and process design of flammable substances are explosive limit, flash point, autoignition temperature, minimum oxygen concentration, heat of combustion etc.. Explosive limit and autoignition temperature are the major physical properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. Explosive limit and autoignition temperature of methane fur LNG process safety were investigated. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosive limits of methane recommended 4.8 vol$\%$ and 16 vol$\%$, respectively. Also autoignition temperatures of methane with ignition sources recommended $540^{\circ}C$ at the electrically heated cruicible furnace (the whole surface heating) and recommended about $1000^{\circ}C$ in the local hot surface. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence and the pressure dependence of the lower explosive limits for methane are proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • 기존 장대레일 궤도의 안정성 평가는 궤도 매개변수에 대하여 고정된 안전측의 값을 사용하는 결정론적인 해석에 의존해서 평가되어져 왔다. 그러나 실제현장의 궤도조건은 많은 영향인자들에 의해 그 특성이 불확실하게 변하고 있다. 따라서 온도하중에 의한 궤도 좌굴에 영향을 미치는 궤도 구성인자들의 불확실성 및 임의성을 보다 합리적으로 고려하기 위해서 확률론적 기법을 적용하는 것이 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 기존 본 연구진에 의해 개발된 장대레일 궤도의 좌굴확률 평가시스템을 이용하여 좌굴 취약도 곡선을 나타내었으며, 궤도 좌굴에 영향을 미치는 주요변수 중 하나인 도상횡저항력에 대한 영향을 분석하였다. 좌굴확률 평가시스템에서는 장대레일 궤도의 좌굴확률을 산정하기 위하여 구조물의 안정과 파괴를 판단할 수 있는 기준을 한계상태방정식으로 표현하고, 이 한계상태방정식으로부터 확률론적 기법 중 하나인 AFOSM(Advanced First Order Second Moment) 방법을 이용하여 파괴확률의 간접적인 지표인 신뢰도지수(${\beta}$)를 통해 좌굴확률을 계산한다. 한계상태방정식에서 구조물의 강도(보유성능)에 해당하는 부분은 궤도의 허용좌굴온도이고, 하중(요구성능)에 해당하는 부분은 레일온도하중으로써 현재 레일온도와 중립온도의 차로 반영된다. 허용좌굴온도 산정에 고려되는 주요변수는 곡선반경(Radius), 도상횡저항력(Lateral Ballast Resista nce), 연직도상강성(Vertical Ballast Stiffness), 궤도 틀림량(Misalignment), 틀림길이(Half Wave Length), 열차운행속도(Velocity)이다. 각 확률변수들이 갖는 확률분포는 모두 정규분포로 가정하였다. 궤도의 기하학적 특성은 곡선반경 5,000m에 대해 고려하였으며, 열차는 KTX의 제원을 사용하여 정지된 상태에서 고려하였다. 틀림량과 틀림길이는 이에 대한 통계적 특성자료가 부족하여 확률변수로 고려하지 않고 결정론적 값으로 취급하였다. 레일온도의 통계적 특성치는 본 연구진에 의해 구축된 기후요소 및 레일온도 DB를 근거로 결정하였으며, 중립온도는 선로관리지침에 따라 $25{\pm}3^{\circ}C$를 기준으로 결정하였다. 또한 도상횡저항력은 실측 데이터를 참고로 하여 평균값에서 10%의 변동량을 갖는 것으로 보고 통계적 특성치를 결정하였다. 도상횡저항력이 좌굴확률에 미치는 영향을 매우 큰 것을 알 수 있었으며, 레일온도 $60^{\circ}C$일 때 도상횡저항력이 증가하면서 감소되는 좌굴확률이 도상저항력이 커질수록 그 감소량이 작아지는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Generation of Pressure/Temperature Limit Curve for Reactor Operation (원자로 운전을 위한 압력/온도 한계곡선의 설정)

  • A reactor pressure vessel, which contains fuel assemblies and reactor vessel internals, has the thermal stress resulting from the cool-down and heat-up of the vessel wall in combination with the pressure stress from system pressure resulting in large stresses. The combination of the pressure stress and thermal stress along with a decrease in fracture toughness may cause through-wall propagation of a relatively small crack. Therefore, it is necessary to define the relations between operating pressure and temperature during cool-down and heat-up. In this study, theory of fracture mechanics for a pressure/temperature limit curve is investigated and a numerical procedure for generating it is developed. Plant-specific limit curves for the Kori unit 1 plant, the oldest nuclear power plant in Korea, have been obtained for several cooling and heating rates and their results are discussed.

An Experimental Study on the Application of Fireproof Panel in Tunnel Duct Slab (터널 풍도슬라브에 사용된 내화패널의 적용성에 관한 실험연구)

  • Purpose: In this study,fire-resistance test were executed to evaluate the effectiveness of the fireproof panel attached to the PSC slab in tunnel. Method: For the fire resistance test, the RWS curve was applied and the furnace of the KICT was used. Result: As a result of the experiment, the maximum temperature measured on the concrete surface of the PSC slab with the fireproof panel was 321.8℃, which was lower than the damage limit temperature of 380℃ for concrete. Also, at the t=25mm, the maximum temperature was 35.2℃, which was lower than the damage temperature of steel, 250℃. The use of precast fire resistance panel(t=30mm) improves fire resistance of PSC structures. Conclusion: As a result of the test, a reinforcement method for attached a fireproof panel in case of fire in a tunnel or an underground roadway is provided to protect a structure from fire. In the future, it is necessary to perform the static performance test of the slab to which the fireproof panel is attached, and to confirm the adhesion performance of the fireproof panel by performing the pull-off test and the fatigue test.

  • The spontaneous ignition of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC) was investigated at constant ambient temperature in the oven and minimum ignition temperature of dust clouds with Godbret-Creenwald Furnace respectively, In the experiments of the vessel filled with sample. the larger the vessel was the lower the spontaneous ignition temperature and ambient temperature was calculated from the Frank-Kamenetskii thermal ignition theory. The minimum ignition temperature for the dust cloud state was found under 21% oxygen concentration. At the experiment with the change of oxygen concentration, HPMC was not ignite at 10% $O_2$and so the limiting oxygen concentration was obtained at 10%.

The Effects on the Atterberg Limits of Clays with Heat Treatment (열처리에 따른 점토의 애터버그 한계 영향)

  • This study examines the effects of heat treatment under laboratory conditions for mixtures of two types of clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite). Clay samples were burned with different temperatures ranging from $100^{\circ}C\;to\;500^{\circ}C$. The Atterberg limits such as liquid and plastic limits were influenced with heat treatment. According to the experimental results, the liquid limits slightly decreased between $100^{\circ}C\;to\;300^{\circ}C$, whereas rapid decreases were observed after $300^{\circ}C$. The plastic limits did not show noticeable differences in the interval $100^{\circ}C\;to\;400^{\circ}C$. But the clay samples showed non plastic behavior at $500^{\circ}C$. The amount of NaCl was getting decreased with temperature. It also revealed that the pH values were also influenced with heat treatment, and the cation exchange capacity (C.E.C) values decreased with temperature.

A Study on the Spontaneous Ignition Characteristics of Wood Pellets related to Change in Flow Rate (공기유량의 변화에 대한 우드펠릿의 자연발화 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Uses of fossil fuels like coal and oil increases with industrial development, and problems like abnormal climate come up as greenhouse gas increases. Accordingly, studies are actively conducted on eco-friendly renewable energy as a replacement for the main resources, and especially, wood pellets with high thermal efficiency are in the limelight as an alternative fuel in thermal power stations and gas boilers. However, despite a constant increase in their usage, few studies are conducted on their risks like fire and spontaneous combustion. Thus, this study found the auto-ignition temperature and critical ignition temperature of wood pellets with a change in flow rate in a thermostatic bath, using a sample vessel with 20 cm in length, 20 cm in height and 14 cm in thickness to predict their ignition characteristics. Consequently, at the flow rate of 0 NL/min, as the core temperature of the sample increased to higher than the ambient temperature, they ignited at $153^{\circ}C$, when the critical ignition temperature was $152.5^{\circ}C$. At the flow rates of 0.5 NL/min and 1.0 NL/min, it was $149.5^{\circ}C$, and at the flow rate of 1.5 NL/min, it was $147.5^{\circ}C$. Consequently, at the same storage, the more the flow rate, the lower the critical ignition temperature became.
