  • This study attempted to examine the relationship between college students' participation in the learning community according to the characteristics of learners. To this end, the learning community divided the subject-linked learning community into a foundation learning community and an advanced learning community. Learner characteristics were classified by gender, grade, and major. A cross-analysis was conducted to examine the difference between participation in the foundation learning community and the advanced learning community according to the learner characteristics. The results are as follows. First, the participation of female students in the foundation learning community and the advanced learning community was higher than that of male students, but it was not statistically significant. Second, it was found that there was a significant difference in participation in the learning community according to the grade. In the case of the foundation learning community, the participation rate of the first and second year students was relatively high, and in the case of the advanced learning community, the ratio of the third and fourth year students was relatively high. Third, as a result of examining the differences by major, it was found that the participation rate of health and welfare universities was high in both the foundation learning community and the advanced learning community. Based on these results, discussions and suggestions are presented.

  • The current study seeks to understand the multi-faceted desires of language learners through the theoretical lens of imagined communities (Norton, 2001). Particularly, the study focuses on the learners of Korean language-one of the less commonly taught languages in the U.S. that has received relatively less attention in previous literature on second language motivation. The study analyzed and compared the narratives told by eleven Korean language learners in a post-secondary language program, and identified four types of imagined communities: Communities of K-pop Culture, Communities of Professionals, Communities of Korean Family and Relatives, and Communities of ethnic Koreans. The study found that these imagined communities were not restricted to a specific region or an ethnic group but encompassed various populations connected through the use of Korean language. The study also found variability within what has been readily labelled as heritage motivation (or motivation related to heritage), as well as striking differences between heritage language learners and non-heritage language learners in terms of their scope of imagination.

  • As the limitations of professional development programs and individual attempts to improve teaching expertise have been reported, mathematics teachers have operated various types of teacher learning communities as alternative teacher professional programs. A teacher learning community can be considered a Community of Practice(CoP) in that it satisfies three factors of Cop, which are common purpose, mutual participation, and shared repertoire, so the 'learning' of a teacher community can be interpreted based on the theory of CoP. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of identity development of five mathematics teachers who have been continuously involved in teacher communities. For this, the researcher collected data on the entire process of community activities through participant observation and conducted individual follow-up interviews to explore mathematics teachers' narratives and personal experiences. Results indicated that mathematics teachers experienced the development of practical knowledge related to mathematics teaching and learning, improvement of teaching practice through continuous reflection and introspection, and recognization the shared value of togethering through community immersion. Based on these experiences, implications for the effective operation of learning communities such as national support of teacher learning communities and horizontal and cooperative teacher norms were discussed, and follow-up research was proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a professional development system for elementary teachers who wish enhance mathematical teaching. The learning community on elementary mathematical teaching was composed of fourth grade teachers in a elementary school and an expert from education university. The activities was processed as establishing of objectives and contents of the learning community, discussing and seeing good lesson video, planning the lesson in collaboration with members, practicing the lesson, and reflecting on activities. To analyze these activities, record materials of meetings, lesson videos, member's writing were used. The results reported that the learning community lead teachers to search the method of professional development and showed itself as the effective media to enhance elementary mathematical teaching professionalism.

  • The concept of Communities of Practice (CoPs) has been highlighted as an effective method for knowledge sharing in Knowledge Management (KM) and has been utilized strategically by many organizations. Therefore, the need to diagnose knowledge sharing activities in CoPs has increased. Previous studies of CoP strategies has generally suggested broad guidelines without diagnosing the current knowledge sharing status of individual CoPs. Furthermore, diagnosis methodologies are not connected to the strategic direction and require considerable time and effort to conduct regularly. The purpose of this paper was to develop a sustainable diagnosis framework for identifying knowledge sharing activities in virtual CoPs and to suggest strategies for CoPs-based on the proposed diagnosis framework. Finally, the proposed diagnosis framework was applied to an educational service case.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze convergent effects of team interaction and team metacognition of participants on a continuous participation in the university learning community. We developed 19 items of team interaction and 17 items of team metacognition through literature review. The subjects were 113 students who participated in learning community in A university. The results are as follows. First, team interaction level and team metacognition level can affect a continuous participation in learning community. The higher team interaction is and the lower team metacognition is, the higher continuous participation is. Second, among team interaction factors that affect a continuous participation in learning community, the more number of learning is and the more encouragement of one another is, the higher continuous participation is. But the less participation of members is, the less flow to learning is, and the less learning time is, the lower a continuous participation is. Third, among team metacognition factors that affect a continuous participation in learning community, the more number of learning is, the higher continuous participation is. But the more use of various learning tools is and the more learning time is, the lower continuous participation is. Based on these results, the convergent ways of support for continuous participation in the university learning community are as follows. First, supporting system is needed to induce students to experience the positive atmosphere of learning community by increasing number of learning to facilitate team interaction and urging them to encourage one another. Second, providing the effective utilization method is necessary for students to fully acknowledge the necessity and value of team metacognition activity.

To this end, in the second semester of 2018, pre and post surveys were conducted on 296 students at A University and analyzed using SPSS. The main research results are as follows. First, there was a significant difference in the participation of the learning community program in the cooperative learning capacity of college students. Second, in the analysis by sub-factors, there were significant differences before and after the program in the factors of cooperative learning competency learning participation and learning satisfaction. Third, the differences between grades showed significant differences between the 2nd and 3rd grades before and after the program. Fourth, based on the results of this study, suggestions were made for learning community program activities and follow-up studies. The results of this study analyzed the effects of learning community activities conducted at universities on the communication skills and cooperative learning capabilities of college students, and presented practical measures for the systematic operation and support of learning community activities.

  • This study investigated the effectiveness of the learning community for the development of convergence on self-directed learning and problem-solving. One hundred ninety-nine university students participated in the study. In specific, one hundred twenty-three among them participated learning community program at the center for teaching and learning for nine weeks while the others were are not as a control group. Pre-post survey with 62 items was conducted regarding self-directed learning(35 items) and problem-solving(27 items). To analyze the data statistically, ANCOVA(Analysis of Covariate) was used. As results, university students in learning community program showed significant difference in all areas of the survey. In other words, university students in learning community program improved self-directed learning and problem solving more than those who were in the control group. Suggestions and ideas of further studies were discussed.
