  • This study investigated general problems concerning the food and nutrition field in the KDC 4th edition based comparative analysis DOC, NDC, and Disciplinary Classification System of Korean Research Foundation, and suggested on some ideas for the improvements of them. Results of the study is summarized as follows. First, the knowledge classification of the food and nutrition field is divided by nutrition, food, and food service management. Second, the library classification of the food and nutrition field deals separately with nutrition and food, namely the nutrition is subdivided in medical science and food is subdivided in home economics. Third, the food and nutrition field in the KDC 4th edition had to be improved to use current terminology, to choose appropriate headings, and to subdivide the subjects more to introduce new topics.

  • Cadastral Science has not been evaluated as an independent discipline according to Code of Research Fields of Korea Research Foundation. The purpose of this study is to find the problems of knowledge classification of Cadastral Science and suggest method of improvement. For the studying, analyzes the definition, objects of research, educational system and curriculum of Cadastral Science. Besides, investigates the condition of Cadastre classification on Code of Research Fields, DDC and KDC. This paper suggests that Cadastral Science can be restructured to the new Interdisciplinary Studies and moved to the upper division. The items of division and subdivision can be also added.

  • This study attempts to reorganize the knowledge classification system for the research fields and majors in education by designing a new classification schedule. Content analysis of the majors and curriculums in the universities and major areas of the academic professors in Korea, and the comparison with the various headings in several classification systems for research fields were carried out. Based upon the comparison with library classification systems and reviews and opinions of subject specialists in major disciplines, finally, a knowledge classification system composed of three parts - schedules, tables and a relative index - was presented. The proposed classification scheme was tested for classifying the research projects listed in the 1998 catalog of the academic research funded by Korea Research Foundation. Also, several ways for developing a more useful knowledge classification scheme to organize disciplinary information effectively and to encourage interdisciplinary research were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is investigate to compare with knowledge classification and library classification system of botany. First, the knowledge field of botany is mainly classified in morphology, physiology, ecology, taxonomy, genetics, evolution and others by the study object of plants. Second, the division of plants is treated in the field of taxonomy, that is, a lower subdivision study of botany, and Engler's classification is still prevalent in the taxonomy. Third, in library classification, KDC, NDC, UDC and CC adopted the Engler's classification, but DDC and LCC was taken of the Bentham & Hooker's classification. In the Engler's classification, plants are arranged by evolution's order, from lower vegetation to higher vegetation, but Bentham & Hooker's classification is arranged in the reverse order. Forth, it is desirable that every plants(482-489) of KDC' botany are subdivided by the attribute or structure of plants being treated in the general botany as if they are subdivided in the DDC or CC.

  • Since the year 2000, emphasis has been placed on a more strict evaluation of national academic societies and their journals, which has caused most societies to endeavour to produce higher quality journals and research. Korean Earth Science Society (KESS) should be such an exemplary model. Thus, the purpose of this study was to isolate characteristics of well-evaluated academic societies and explore the direction KESS should proceed to better its educational agents and strengthen its research contributions. Back in 2002, the Korean Research Foundation graded the journal of KESS as an officially qualified journal. It was bequeathed the first institute to be registered in the category of Earth Science. Furthermore, such classification was accepted as national academic classification and Scientific Citation Index through a public hearing executed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning in 2003. Currently, the Korean Research Foundation is reviewing a proposal to approve Earth Science as a unique citation index category. This proposal is quite crucial in that such an approval would be followed by increased funding and affect the future status of KESS. More support and interest from all members of KESS are required to establish the identity of Earth Science as an independent academic entity.

  • As the boundaries between disciplines have been weakened and interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary subjects have increased, there is a limitation to express subjects with DDC. This study evaluates DDC instructions using interdisciplinary numbers and classifying more than one discipline through Delphi research. As a result, it is found that there is a need for defining separately 'interdisciplinary subjects' and 'multidisciplinary subjects', based on the level of integration among disciplines, and improving the instruction to maintain the consistency in assigning and filing classification numbers. It is also discussed that to enhance the symbols' power of expression, an analytic/synthetic method could be adopted.

A New Model for Connecting the Classification Systems of Knowledge Activities - Linking Research-Technology-Industry and Research-Major-Job - (지식활동의 관계식별을 위한 연계형 분류체계에 관한 연구 - 연구-기술-산업과 연구-전공-취업 연계 -)

  • This paper suggests a new model connecting various knowledge activities through classification systems such as classifications of research, technology, industry, major and job. Although research activities are linked to technology and industry areas or to education and job areas, there is no effort to link these kinds of activities. There are a few studies to link research and technology or research and education respectively. But, there have been no studies to connect technology-industry linkage and education-job linkage. This paper suggests that research area can be a basis of link between technology-industry linkage and education-job linkage. The methods building the links are not simple, but easy; 1) setting up new science/research classification system having two dimensions of research and application, 2) building electronic systems and databases allowing fields for several classification systems, and 3) making rules using multi-dimensional classification systems following the purpose of the programs. The model is designed to meet the needs of nationwide R&D and human resources policies, and for the preparation of knowledge society to grasp the relationship between sequential activities using knowledge. If we know the interactive relationships between various areas, we can trace related phenomena in different activities with restricted information.

  • This study presents a discussion on the biomedical laboratory science (formally clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory science) with the identity of biomedical laboratory science, as well as the academic classification system for systematic approach. The field of biomedical laboratory science is not registered in the academic research area classification system of the National Research Foundation of Korea. Since the inception of the first department of biomedical laboratory science in 1963, about 52 departments were since established. Despite the scientific identity, biomedical laboratory science have not been acknowledged professionally in most institutions. Observing the academic research area classification, the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and dental hygiene science are systematically classified and approved the identities by the authorities. This study is freshly academic area classification system of the biomedical laboratory science. The contents of this study are summarized as follows. The medical laboratory technologist's discipline is considered within the medical and science category, clinical pathology in class, and biomedical laboratory science in division. Sections of biomedical laboratory science include hematology, transfusionology, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, parasitology, science, molecular biology, histology, cytology, cardiopulmonary physiology, and neurophysiology.
