  • This study aims to analysis of suspended-load concentration in related to those data by measuring vertical sediments distribution with rainfall using the ASM (Argus Surface Meter)- IV at the channel reach of a upstream and a downstream in small river. The watershed, small river basin where had taken for experimental study was selected, which is a drainage area lied at Walha in Yunkee-Gun, Chungnam Province. Measured data of suspended-load concentration consists of two groups with 2,145 data during 1hr 11min 30sec and 1,216 data during 40min 32sec for measuring time of 2 second in the study reaches at river, respectively. In order to analyze of the vertical concentration distribution, using the data sets are selected the measuring time 16 sets one of these data by random in the study reaches. As a results, the Rouse number of a measured and a calculated value show that a rang of $0.00129{\sim}0.02394$, averaged value of 0.01129 md, a rang of $0.00118{\sim}0.00822$, averaged value of 0.00436 in upstream reaches, and also a rang of $0.065115{\sim}0.065295$, averaged value of 0.06521, and a rang of $0.057315{\sim}0.059109$, averaged value of 0.05795 in downstream reaches, respectively. These difference show that measured Rouse number compared with downstream reach errors of less than in upstream reach, but between measured and calculated of the Rouse number compared with downstream reach errors of more than in upstream reach, respectively. It seems to will be included one of the occurrence errors of variable estimations when Rouse number of calculated value to be made computed by the fall velocity with a high temperature of water using equation of empirical kinematic viscosity was derived in this study.

  • Recently, forest soil sediment disasters resulting from locally concentrated heavy rainfall have been occurring frequently in steep slope areas. The importance of landslide hazard map is emerging to analyze landslide vulnerable areas. This study was carried out to develop HyGIS-Landslide based on Hydro Geographic Information System in order to analyze forest soil sediment disaster in the mountainous river basin. HyGIS-Landslide is one of HyGIS components designed by considering the landslide hazard criteria of Korea Forest Service. It could show the distribution of landslide hazard areas after calculating the spatial data. In this system, the user could reset the weight of hazard criteria to reflect the regional characteristics of the landslide area. This component provided user interface that could make the latest spatial data available in the area of interest. HyGIS-Landslide could be applied to the surveyor's compensation score and it was possible to reflect the landslide risk exactly through it. Also, it could be used in topographic analysis techniques providing spatial analysis and making topographical parameters in HyGIS. Finally the accuracy could be acquired by calculating the landslide hazard grade map and landslide mapping data. This study applied HyGIS-Landslide at the Gangwon-do province sample site. As a result, HyGIS-Landslide could be applied to a decision support system searching for mountainous disaster risk region; it could be classified more effectively by re-weighting the landslide hazard criteria.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suspended solids and eutrophication processes relationships in Chungju lake using CE-QUAL-W2, two-dimensional (2D) longitudinal/vertical hydrodynamic and water quality model. For water quality modeling, the lake segmentation was configured as 7 branches system according to their shape and tributary distribution. The model was calibrated (2010) and validated (2008) using 2 years of field data of water temperature, suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and algae (Chl-a). The water temperature began to increase in depth from April and the stratification occurred at about 10 m early July heavy rain. The high SS concentration of the interflow density currents entering from the watershed was well simulated especially for July 2008 heavy rainfall event. The simulated concentration range of TN and TP was acceptable, but the errors might occur form the poor reflection for sedimentation velocity of nitrogen component and adsorption-sediment of phosphorus in model. The concentration of Chl-a was simulated well with the algal growth patterns in summer of 2010 and 2008, but the error of under estimation may come from the use of width-averaged velocity and concentration, not considering the actual to one side inclination by wind effect.

  • Morphological and population characteristics of the Cottus koreanus were investigated at Hoam stream from October 2015 and April 2016. This is the first record on C. koreanus not only from Hoam stream (the upstream region of Daejong stream, Gyeongsangbuk-do Gyeongju-si Yangbuk-myeon Hoam-ri) but also from the stream flowing into the Samcheogosip stream, in the southern part of East Sea, Korea. The distribution of C. koreanus ranged from Girim temple to Yongyeon waterfall, about 1.2 km, and the water surface were about $3,600m^2$. The population size was assumed to 1,656 individual number, 46 object per $100m^2$. The morphometric characteristics of C. koreanus in the Hoam stream and the Han river are very similar except that the population at Hoam stream shorter head length, ventral fin ray length, pectoral fin ray length and mouth width when compared with the population at Han river. Other than that, the two populations showed the same meristic characters. Frequency analysis of total length indicated that the group with 40~59 mm in total length was one year old, the 60~79 mm was two years old, and the group over 80 mm was three years old. The average number of eggs in the ovaries was estimated as 361 (239~468) per matured female. The number of matured eggs size in ovaries was $2.6{\pm}0.21$ (23.~3.1) mm and this species was large eggs type. Calculation of the length-weight relation of C. koreanus showed the value of constant a as 0.00001 and b as 3.01, and the Condition factor (K) was 1.26 an on average.

  • In today's environmental engineering practice, many technologies such as GIS have been adopted to analyze chemical and biological process in water bodies and pollutants movements on the land surface. However, the linkage between spatially represented land surface pollutants and the in-stream processes has been relatively weak. This lack of continuity needs to develop a method in order to link the spatially-based pollutant source characterization with the water quality modeling. The objective of this thesis was to develop a two-way(forward and backward) link between ArcView GIS software and the USEPA water quality model, WASP5. This thesis includes a literature review, the determination of the point source and non-point source loadings from WASP5 modeling, and the linkage of a GIS with WASP5 model. The GIS and model linkage includes pre-processing of the input data within a GIS to provide necessary information for running a model in the forms of external input files. The model results has been post-processed and stored in the GIS database to be reviewed in a user defined form such as a chart, or a table. The interface developed from this study would provide efficient environment to support the easier decision making form water quality management.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the seasonal prevalence of adult mosquitoes and occurrence of anopheline larvae in Gimpo, Gyeonggi province, Republic of Korea. Sampling of adult mosquitoes was carried out 18 times from May to September in 2008, using light traps at six sites. A total of 48,919 individuals belonging to 16 species and 8 genera were collected. Aedes vexans nipponii (43%) was the most frequently collected, followed by Anopheles sinensis (34%) and Culex tritaeniorhynchus (14%). The seasonal prevalence of anopheline mosquitoes had a different occurrence compared to that of Cx. tritaeniorhynchus. Anopheline larvae were collected using a standard dipper (size = of 350 ml) at eight habitat types of 203 point locations. Anopheline larvae were confirmed from 138 points (63%). The average larval population per dipper was highest in the lotus plantation (6.9 individuals), followed by irrigation channel (4.5 ind.), dropwort field (3.4 ind.), fallow field (3.1 ind.), paddy field (1.8 ind.), swamp (1.4 ind.), and stream (0.2 ind.). There was no significant relationship observed between larval density and DO, pH, salinity, or distance from blood meal hosts (cowshed, pigsty, chicken-house). In the results of average nearest neighbor analysis (ANNA), the distribution of whole points for mosquito larval collection was clustered, and points with over 4.0 larvae per dipper were randomly distributed. Within the study area Haseong-myeon, those points where over 3.0 larvae were collected were of a dispersed distribution.

  • The distribution status and habitat characteristics of the endangered species, Lethenteron reissneri were investigated in 2011~2012 in Korea. During the study period, L. reissneri were collected 60 stations among 755 sampling stations investigated. The total numbers of ammocoetes and adults were 208 and 435, respectively from eight stations of the Han River drainage system, four stations of Geum River drainage system, 32 stations of Seomjin and Yeongsan River drainage systems, and 16 stations of Nakdong River drainage system. The Han and Geum river drainage systems, the Sapkyo Stream and independent streams running toward the East Sea were estimated to have suffered sudden reductions of population density, whereas the Seomjin River drainage system showed increased population density compared with historic occurrence records. L. reissneri inhabited the middle-upper stream of clean water with well-developed rapids and lots of aquatic organisms. According to IUCN Red List categories and criteria L. reissneri was assessed to be vulnerable (VU) [B2ab (ii,iii,iv,v);D1] because of the rapid reduction of the occupying areas and the small number of mature individuals. Besides the distribution status and habitat characteristics we discussed the conservation strategies of L. reissneri.

  • A statistical characteristics, relations of calendar and water year, and frequencies of precipitaion which are necessary for water resources planning were analyzed with long historical data(1905-1991 years). And the analysis of precipitation of the drought periods in 1967-1968 years was carried out. The study basins are the five major rivers in Korea. As a results of this study, annual precipitation shows an increasing trend but its variation has no statistical significance. The rellations of calendar and water year precipitation is presented, it shows that there are little difference of the total precipitation between them. The annual minimum series of total precipitation for the periods of 3, 6, 9, and 12 months by water year are constructed, and frequency precipitation for each periods using 2-parameter lognormal distribution is presented. The analysis of the precipitation in 1967-1968 years shows in a natural river basins that it would be a moderate drought, if dry seasons(Oct-May) or wet seasons(Jun-Sep) has 75 percents of historical mean precipitation of the same periods. And if it has less than 60 percents of historical mean precipitation, it would be a severe drought.

  • In recent, increasing of the impervious area gives rise to short concentration time and high peak discharge comparing with natural watershed and it is a cause of urban flood damage. Therefore, we have performed for structural and non-structural plans to reduce the damage from inundation. The Gulpo-cheon basin had been frequently inundated and damaged due to the water level of Han river. So, the Gulpo-cheon floodway was constructed with 20 meters width for flood control in the basin but it was not enough for our expectation and now we have a plan to expand the floodway to 80 meters. We use a XP-SWMM model developed based on EPA-SWMM version for analyzing the capacity of flood conveyance by the expansion of Gulpo-cheon floodway with the same 100 years return period design storm and the same tidal conditions of the Yellow sea. The flood conveyance after the expansion of floodway becomes three times comparing it with before the expansion. Also we simulate the flood discharge at the diversion point of Gulpo-cheon for the expanded condition of floodway and know that the discharge of about 300 m3/sec is flowing backward to the expanded floodway. Therefore we may need some kinds of hydraulic structures to prevent the back water.
