  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the concepts of smartphone and app, to review the theoretical researches and the representative service examples in academic libraries' mobile services based on smartphone apps, and to propose the proper mobile services methods based on smartphone apps in academic libraries of Korea. The ways for mobile app services in academic libraries are like these: 1) Libraries need to prepare the hybrid service system based on the combination of mobile web and app for smartphone. 2) Libraries have the guidelines for choosing apps which are applied to library services. 3) Libraries develop the apps for library marketing and education services and make use of existed apps to their own services. 4) Smartphone application bibliography service(Appography service) needs to be developed and serviced as an academic library service field.

  • The roles of librarians have been changing with the paradigm shift of libraries. The paradigm of libraries has shifted from a traditional information management-centered way to a hybrid approach emphasizing a balance between collection and access. This study analyzed the internal and external changes of libraries to create Blue Ocean of special libraries by using the SWOT analysis, and adopted ERCR analysis for the reasonable management of libraries. This study researched the various changes of the role of librarians through the literature review and inter-viewing librarians working at the DaeDuck Science Research Complex.

  • Recently, the speed of changes surrounding university libraries requires a hybrid library environment that supports integrated services, combining a virtual space with physical space of traditional libraries. Through changes, university libraries have faced the need to review their missions and visions, laying stress on the core values of university libraries. This study analyzed the central keywords in the contents of mission and vision statements of university libraries in America, England, Canada, and Australia. The research was acquired from mission and vision statements containing core values of developed university libraries. Core values are present in each area such as correction and information resources, services, place, people, environment and infrastructure, community, and parent-university relations. Ultimately, this study tried to provide the directions and the basic materials for the establishment of missions and visions for university libraries in Korea.

  • This study was conducted under the premise of providing the model for the construction of the library and the digital library in PUST, the joint construction from South and North Korea. First, we determined the problems in the construction of digital libraries as well as possible issues that may rise from the construction of the digital library in PUST. The results of the research showed that there were imminent problems from the operation of a digital library with the inadequate progress in the Held of copyright. In addition, the difference in the language system and the knowledge foundations of the two countries will produce problems in the homepage access, database construction, and information retrieval. In order to overcome these predictable problems, this research proposes the following: (1) parallel operation of both digital and high-drive libraries; (2) duplexing the homepage through the application of unicode concerning the digital library; (3) development and application of converted letter codes through the establishment of NCHAR data type; and (4) construction of an authority database.

  • The purposes of the study are to design a key-frame extraction algorithm for constructing the virtual storyboard surrogates and to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. To do this, first, the theoretical framework was built by conducting two tasks. One is to investigate the previous studies on relevance and image recognition and classification. Second is to conduct an experiment in order to identify their frames recognition pattern of 20 participants. As a result, the key-frame extraction algorithm was constructed. Then the efficiency of proposed algorithm(hybrid method) was evaluated by conducting an experiment using 42 participants. In the experiment, the proposed algorithm was compared to the random method where key-frames were extracted simply at an interval of few seconds(or minutes) in terms of accuracy in summarizing or indexing a video. Finally, ways to utilize the proposed algorithm in digital libraries and Internet environment were suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a collaborative print journal preservation model for the medical libraries in Korea. After reviewing previous studies and advanced preservation practices, a survey was administered to the members of the Korean Medical Library Association to collect data about the present states of journal weeding and storage space as well as their needs and preferences for collaborative preservation. Based on the analysis, a hybrid model, consisting of centralized and distributed archives, is proposed with MEDLIS as infra structure. Detailed characteristics and three phases of implement strategies are described. Finally, recommendations for the Korean Medical Library Association to the successful substantiation are suggested.

  • It is necessary to find the practical considerations for applying RDA in building up the bibliographic records by importing RDA records from LC or OCLC in Korea. Especially, it is not easy to apply RDA appropriately because there are many alternatives and options in RDA. Therefore, this study is to grasp the way for applying RDA in building up the bibliographic records by reviewing LC RDA guidelines and analyzing RDA cataloging policies of libraries such as University of Chicago, North Carolina State University, and Standford University. As a result, these libraries have catalogued according to LC RDA guidelines and each library has its own guidelines, i.e., in statement of responsibilities, to transcribe all but exceptionally allow to transcribe only first, in publication statement, to use 264 field or 260 field, and in resource types, to transcribe all types of content, media and carrier or to transcribe 33X with GMD. Therefore followings would be considered for RDA application. First, some variations could be allowed for special situations of libraries in applying RDA and LC RDA guidelines. Second, the hybrid records that describe the core element of RDA to non-RDA records would be written in processing AACR2 to RDA. Third;the display of 33X field would be designed for expressing the resource types.

  • As the smartphone market has expanded and university students in their twenties account for the largest portion of the market, university libraries need to provide mobile library services to keep up with students' growing demand in mobile services. The purpose of this study is to analyze the status and trends of mobile services in Korean university libraries. This study investigated mobile services of 434 university libraries in Korea and 114 ones which are members of ARL during the months of September and November in 2012. As a result, this study found that university libraries in Korea were offering 55 mobile Web and 29 mobile application services with 11.2 and 10.7 contents respectively. In addition, on the basis of the identified current problems, this study suggested further steps for developing and improving mobile services in Korean university libraries.

  • Recent advancements in information technology and the Internet have caused an explosive increase in the information available and the means to distribute it. However, such information overflow has made the efficient and accurate search of information a difficulty for most users. To solve this problem, an information retrieval and filtering system was developed as an important tool for users. Libraries and information centers have been in the forefront to provide customized services to satisfy the user's information needs under the changing information environment of today. The aim of this study is to propose an efficient information service for libraries and information centers to provide a personalized recommendation system to the user. The proposed method overcomes the weaknesses of existing systems, by providing a personalized hybrid recommendation method for multimedia contents that works in a large-scaled data and user environment. The system based on the proposed hybrid method uses an effective framework to combine Association Rule with Collaborative Filtering Method.

  • A more sophisticated library collection policy is required due to the changing information environment. Both traditional resources and diversified networked information resources are increasing continuously. The National Library of Korea should construct a systematic collection development policy in order to fulfill its mission. The purpose of this study is to develop a basic framework that is intended to improve the coverage of national collection. Examining previous studies and the national collection development policies of major advanced countries, a model consisting of four sub-models has been proposed. It includes hybrid collection, cooperative linking collection, collection evaluation, and a collection policy statement. Details of the sub-models and strategies are described.
