  • This study was conducted to evaluate fertigation effects of pig slurry (PS) and chemical fertilizer (CF) in cucumber by investigating the growth and yield, nutrient content and uptake, nutrient use efficiency, and soil characteristics in greenhouse cultivation. The cropping patterns of cucumber were semi-forcing culture and retarding culture, and the experiment involves four treatments: No fertilizer (NF), $26mg\;L^{-1}$ and $52mg\;L^{-1}$ of N application by slurry composting biofiltration liquefied fertilizer (SCBLF), and $52mg\;L^{-1}$ of N treatment by chemical fertilizer. The difference on the plant height of cucumber between SCBLF and CF treatments was no significant, but fresh weight and dry weight of stem and root were higher in $26mg\;L^{-1}$ SCBLF treatment. The Ca content of the leaf was lower in the treatments of SCBLF and the K content of the root was lower in the $52mg\;L^{-1}$ CF treatment. The Ca content of the stem was lowest in the $52mg\;L^{-1}$ CF treatment and the mineral content of the fruit showed no significant difference. In case of semi-forcing culture, the gross yield was lower in the $52mg\;L^{-1}$ CF treatment and the yield of unmarketable fruit was lower in the SCBLF treatments. The nutrient use efficiency of cucumber is as follows: K (8.3 ~ 30.9%), N (4.2 ~ 13.0%), P (1.9 ~ 2.0%). The SCBLF treatments showed higher figure in the soil pH than that of the CF treatment, while EC and the content of $NO_3$-N were higher in the CF treatment than the former. The content of exchangeable K was higher in the plot treated with $52mg\;L^{-1}$ SCBLF, and there were no significant differences in the content of Ca and Mg between the treatments. In conclusion, it is suggested that the application of liquefied manure made from pig slurry may be able to replace the use of chemical fertilizer in nitrogen and potassium.

  • Chemical properties of the soils were surveyed in the field of vinyl houses concentrated in the area of Bunpyong-dong and Shinchon-dong of Cheongju, Chilgeum-dong of Chungju and Gageum-myeon of Jungweon-gun. Chungcheongbuk-do province. 1. Content of chemical component of the soil in the vinyl house was higher than in open field. In more than half of the vinyl house soils surveyed, electric conductivity was more than 4.0 mmhos/cm and available phosphate was more than 1,000ppm. 2. Contents of availble phosphate and exchangeable potassium were increased with years of cultivation and their content of accumulation in soil were in the order of Bunpyong-dong>Shinchon-dong>Gageum-myeon>Chilgeum-dong. While their mobility was comparatively low. 3. $NO_3$-N content was remarkably higher in vinyl house soil and the older in cultivation made $NO_3$-N content higher same as the case of available phosphate content. However easy leaching of $NO_3$-N through soil profile is expected due to the fact that $NO_3$-N content was rapidly decreased by removal of polyethylene film cover from the frame of house after harvest of crops. 4. It is a tendency that various chemical contents of vinyl house soils wer higher in 1992 than in 1988~1990, especially much higher from the area of Bunpyong-dong and Shinchon-dong of Cheongju. 5. Salt accumulation in vinyl house soil has been increased with continuing cultivation. Therefore amount of fertilizer application should be controlled in order to avoid salt toxicity, quality deterioration for crop and salt contamination of ground water.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of environmental conditions and the quality and yield of melon fruit by heat fan operation in greenhouses at winter season. The average daily temperature inside the tunnels during January 1 to 31, 2017 was $0.9^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the control $17.8^{\circ}C$. The air flow rate of heater fan treatment was 4.8 times higher than the control (untreated $0.05m{\cdot}s^{-1}$) at 20cm above the ground where the korean melon grew. The temperature of the heater pan was $5.6^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the untreated at $35.3^{\circ}C$ and the relative humidity was 8.1% lower than that of the untreated at 39.1%. The flowering rate of the heater fan treatment was 96%, 5% higher than the control. The number of first harvest days of heater fan treatment was shortened by 4 days than that of untreated treatment. Fruit quality and marketable fruit yield increased by 3.4% and 38% compared to untreated respectively, the heater fan treatment increased the temperature inside the greenhouse and air flow rete, which were beneficial for growing the korean melon in greenhouses at winter season.

  • BACKGROUND: Anthracnose disease caused by Collectotrichum spp. is one of the most important worldwide devastating diseases in red pepper plants. Fungicides using plant extracts have several advantages, compared to synthetic chemical fungicides, because they are naturally occurring compounds, are usually safe for agricultural environment and are used for producing highly valuable agricultural products. Efforts for seeking an anti-fungal activities using naturally occurring compounds were mostly conducted from medicinal plant extracts. Sap of Rhus verniciflus was known to have healing effects on several human diseases. Recently, the extracts of Rhus verniciflus were actively tested for anti-cancer, anti-oxidative, and anti-fungal effects. In this study, the extract of Rhus verniciflus was tested for anti-fungal activity against Colletotrichum spp., which cause anthracnose in red-pepper. METHODS AND RESULTS: After neutralizing extracts of Rhus verniciflus (urushiol contents 70%) with autoclave, the crude extracts were used to investigate inhibitory effects for mycelial growth and spore germination of Colletotrichum spp. on PDA media. The mycelial growth and spore germination of Colletotrichum spp. were inhibited 18-39% and over 50% in response to crude extract of R. verniciflus (1.0 mg/mL). After spraying the extracts at the same concentrations above and then artificially inoculating Colletotrichum spp. on blue and red-pepper fruits, in vitro inhibition effects were examined. At 1.0 mg/mL, the crude extract of R. verniciflus showed inhibition activity in anthracnose incidence on blue- and red-pepper as 68.1-75.0%, through a artificial inoculation of Colletotrichum spp. in a laboratory. For in vivo inhibitory effects, the extracts (1.0, 0.1, and 0.01 mg/mL) were treated on red-pepper plants grown in green house 3 times at the interval of 1 week. Then inhibitory effects were determined by counting diseased fruits at 1 week after final treatment. The incidence of anthracnose was inhibited over 60% in the greenhouse by treatment of crude extract of R. verniciflus (1.0 mg/mL). CONCLUSION(s): Extracts of Rhus verniciflus were shown to have inhibitory effects on mycelial growth, spore germination of Colletotrichum spp. in vitro and on occurrence of anthracnose on pepper fruit in green house.
