  • Ultrasonic metal welding can be used to weld different metals together safely and precisely, without solder, flux and special preparation. Ultrasonic metal welding machine consists of a power supply, a transducer, a booster and a horn. This paper designed the horn needed for Ultrasonic metal welding. The horn has to be designed and manufactured accurately, because measurements such as the shape, length, mass and etc. have effects on the resonant frequency and the vibration mode. The designed horn has the feature of 40,000Hz of nature frequency, and maximizes vibration range in the Tip by resonance in the frequency of ultrasonic wave machine. In this paper, we calculated and analyzed the natural frequency to find the optimal design of the horn that had the amplitude about $12{\mu}m$ by the modal analysis and harmonic analysis using ANSYS. And we analyzed FFT analysis of the manufactured horn.

  • This study investigates the structural strength analysis due to rib thickness of lower arm. At structural analysis, model 1 has the most deformation by comparing three models. As most equivalent stress is shown at the part connected with wheel knuckle, the strength becomes weaker in cases of three models. At fatigue analysis, model 1 becomes most unstabilized among three models. Model 3 has most fatigue life and the next model is model 2. The range of maximum harmonic response frequencies becomes 140 to 175Hz in cases of three models. Because the critical frequency at model 3 becomes highest among three models but the stress exceeds yield stress, model 3 becomes most unstabilized at vibration durability. As models 1 and 2 has less than yield stress, these models become stabilized. Model 2 becomes most favorable by comparing three models at structural, fatigue and vibration analyses. This study result can be effectively utilized with the design of lower arm by investigating prevention against damage and its strength durability.

  • This study investigates structural and vibration analyses for three types of bike frame fork models. As long as the maximum equivalent stresses of these models are lower than the yield stress, the three models are considered to be safe structurally. Type 3, with a maximum equivalent stress of 169.23 MPa, has the lowest stress among the three models and the strongest strength. Types 1, 2 and 3 have natural frequencies lower than 270 Hz. Type 3, with a critical frequency of 118 Hz, has the best durability under vibration among the three models. In order to decrease the vibration transmitted to a bike rider riding on a rough road, the impact due to vibration can be relieved by selecting a Type 3 model from among the three models. The results of this study can be effectively utilized for the design of a bike frame fork as this allows the anticipation and prevention of damage caused by durability issues.

  • This study investigates structural and vibration analyses due to the change of bolt Numbers on models 1 and 2 of flange couplings connected with both sides of axis. As maximum equivalent stresses of models 1 and 2 are 122.05 and 102.3 MPa respectively by the basis of bolt, these stresses are within the allowable stress of this model and the safety of bolt design is verified. As maximum equivalent stresses of models 1 and 2 are 196.2 and 196.4 MPa respectively by the basis of body, these stresses are within the allowable stress of this model and the safety of body design is verified. Through natural frequency analysis, maximum displacements of model 1 and 2 are shown at the frequencies of 6565.1 and 6614.9 Hz respectively. Maximum displacements in cases of models 1 and 2 are shown at harmonic frequencies of 7760 and 7840 Hz at real loading conditions. By putting these study results together, the durability of vibration at model 2 with bolt numbers of 8 becomes better than model 1 with bolt numbers of 6. These study results can be effectively utilized with the design on flange coupling by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against its damage.

  • Because structural systems are becoming lighter and more flexible and have lower natural frequencies and dampings than before, coordinated rhythmic activities such as dancing, audience participation in arenas or concert halls, and aerobics result in undesirable levels of vibration. For rhythmic activities, it is resonant or near resonant behavior that result in significant dynamic amplification and hence human discomfort. The most rational design strategy is to provide enough of a gap between the natural frequency of a floor system and the dominant frequencies excited by planned human activities to assure reasonably that resonance will not occur. For the case study the vibration measurements were performed at the floor of a long-span multi-purpose hall during the rock concert of popular singer.

  • In this paper, a new equivalent circuit for a defected ground structure(DGS) is proposed and adapted to design of a power amplifier for performance improvement. The DGS equivalent circuit presented in this paper consists of parallel LC resonator and parallel capacitance to describe the fringing fields due to the etched defects on the metallic ground plane, and also is used to optimize the matching circuit of a power amplifier. A previous research has also used a DGS for harmonic rejection and efficiency improvement of a power amplifier(1), however, there was no exact equivalent circuit analysis. In this paper, we suggest a novel design method and show the performance improvement of a class AB power amplifier by using the equivalent circuit of a DGS applied to output matching circuit. The design method presented in this paper can provide very accurate design results to satisfy the optimum load condition and the desirable harmonic rejection, simultaneously. As a design example, we have designed a 20W power amplifier with and without circuit simulation of DGS, and compared the measurement results.

  • Harmonic drives have attracted increasing attention with the development of materials, parts, and related equipment. Harmonic drives exhibit high deceleration, high accuracy, and light weight. The stiffness of flexible splines according to the radial load is studied using a commercial FEM program to design the structure of the flexible spline and finite element to improve the weight and price competitiveness of harmonic drives. In addition, several studies have measured and compared friction coefficients based on 3D printed tread patterns. However, owing to the characteristics of plastic materials, a decrease in stiffness in the radial direction is inevitable. To prevent a decrease in stiffness in the radial direction, we designed and manufactured flex splines with a wrinkle shape. Through structural analysis, the reaction force and stiffness in the radial direction were determined. In addition, the maximum angle of the mound was derived by theoretical calculations, and the performance of the harmonic drive was compared with the results obtained in the mound experiment. Structural analysis shows that the shape of wrinkles decreased the stress and reaction force and increased the safety factor in comparison with that of the circular shape. During performance verification through continuous experiments, the developed harmonic drive showed continuous performance similar to that of an actual tank model. It is expected that the flex spline with a compliant spring and wrinkle shape will prevent a decrease in the radial stiffness.

  • The dispersive phase velocity of a wave propagating through multilayered systems such as a soil site is an important parameter and carries valuable information in non-destructive site characterization tests. The dispersive phase velocity of a wave can be determined using the phase spectrum, which is easily evaluated through the cross power spectrum. However, the phase spectrum determined using the cross power spectrum is easily distorted by background noise which always exists in the field. This causes distortion of measured signal and difficulties in the determination of the dispersive phase velocities. In this paper, a new method to evaluate the phase spectrum using the harmonic wavelet transform is proposed and the phase spectrum by the proposed method is applied to the determination of dispersion curve. The proposed method can successfully remove background noise effects. To evaluate the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations of multi-layered systems were performed. Phase spectrums and dispersion curves determined by the proposed method were found to be in good agreement with the actual phase spectrums and dispersion curves biased by heavy background noise. The comparison manifests the proposed method to be a very useful tool to overcome noise effects.

  • Shear wave velocity (or shear modulus) of rock filled zone of CFRD is very important factor in the evaluation of performance of CFRD under the load such as earthquake. A shear wave velocity profile can be determined by surface wave method but this profile has been uncertainty caused by spatial variation of material property in rock filled zone. This uncertainty in shear wave velocity profile could be evaluated by the reliability based analysis which uses a coefficient of variation of material property to consider uncertainty caused by spatial variation of material property. In this paper, the possible 600 shear wave velocity profiles in rock filled zone of CFRD were generated using the method based on harmonic wavelet transform and 8 shear wave velocity profiles by HWAW method in the field, and the coefficients of variation of shear wave velocity with depth were evaluated for the rock filled zone of CFRD in Korea.

  • In order to design and predict the performance of the harmonic side drive motor, it is necessary to analyze the torque generated by the structure. In this paper, an analytical model is proposed for design. Conformal mapping is used to model the capacitance and torque of the motor as a function of the rotor angular position with two-dimensional approximation. Then the result of conformal mapping analysis is verified with F.E.M result.
