  • We described a spatial distribution pattern and floral diversity on the Paspalum distichum community occurring at the ecological parks of Hwamyeong, Daejeo, Samnak, and Maekdo in the Nakdong river estuary. A total distribution area of P. distichum community was $303,462.6m^2$. Its largest area was found in Samnak eco-park ($185,910.1m^2$). The most richness of knotgrass patches in each ecological park was determined Maekdo eco-park (87). Cover class level-5 shows the largest area ($260,663.2m^2$). A total of 73 taxa (34 families, 55 genus, 65 species, and 8 varieties) were listed up on the P. distichum community. A welldeveloped population of knotgrass was found predominantly at sites linked into human impacts at the riverine floodplain, the stream courses flowing through the parks, and the man-made channels and wetlands. Finally we proposed an ecological management strategy for knotgrass population in the study area.

  • This study was carried out to grade and evaluate the intertidal mudflat by birds. The mudflat was graded by two methods such as the scoring and ranking. First, for the scoring of the mudflat, five factors were estimated; population size, the number of protected species, the individuals of protected birds, the number of species(or subspecies) over 1% level of the survival population, and 1% level of the domestic population. After scoring of these five factors, the grade was scored by total. Second, for the ranking, six factors were estimated; population size, the density of birds, the index of species diversity, species richness, species evenness, and population stability. After ranking of these six factors, the grade was relatively ranked. Five grade by scoring was the important mudflat for the value of international preservation, and the most mudflats of the estuary gained V grade. The higher grades by ranking were the mudflats of Nakdonggang and Mankyunggang river estuaries. And the inner mudflats were more valuable than the outer mudflats in Mankyunggang & Dongjingang river estuaries. The grading of the mudflat by birds can be used for estimating and appointing of the important mudflats, and suggested the objective of criteria for the effective preservation and management.

  • The Seocheon and Yubu Island mudflats in Geum Estuary are important stopover sites for migratory birds as energy supplementation area in the East Asia-Australasian Flyway. Benthic invertebrates in the tidal flats are important food resources for the migratory birds. In other words, benthic invertebrates in the tidal flats play an important ecological role in energy flow. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between benthic invertebrate assemblages and environmental factors in Seocheon and Yubudo tidal flats in the Geum Estuary. As a result of the benthic invertebrate assemblage during the fall migration season, the total species number was 147, density and biomass were $1,772{\pm}1,342individuals/m^2$ and $445.1{\pm}807.6g/m^2$, respectively. Based on the appearance species and the density data, the result of analysis of mutual similarity among sampling sites was divided into two groups. Group A was the Macrophthalmus-Heteromastus community and Group B was the Spio-Urothoe-Mandibulophoxus community. Group B showed higher mean species number, density and biomass than Group A. The BIO-ENV analysis showed that the benthic invertebrate assemblages were most affected by the combination of sand content % and sediment sorting (${\rho}=0.500$). The variables of significant relationship with species number and biomass were sediment sorting (p=0.015) and the pore water DO(Dissolved Oxygen, p=0.003) in sediment, respectively.

  • To understand the sedimentary environment of Scirpus planiculmis habitat (Myeongji and Eulsuk tidal flats) in the Nakdong Estuary, this study analyzed the statistical parameters (sorting, skewness, and kurtosis) of grain size data and the major (Al, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, Na, K, Ti, and P), minor (Li, Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Zr, Cs, Pb, Th, and U), and rare earth elements (REEs) in sediment cores. For Myeongji, the sediment structure of the upper part of the cores was poorly sorted, more finely skewed, and more leptokurtic due to construction of the West gate. By contrast, the Eulsuk cores all differed due to the contrasting floodgate operation patterns of the West and East gates. The linear discriminate function (LDF) results corresponded to the statistical parameters for grain size. At the Eulsuk tidal flat (sites ES05 and ES11), elemental distributions were representative of Al-, Fe- and Ca-associated profiles, in which the elements are largely controlled by the accumulation of their host minerals (such as Na- and K-aluminosilicate and ferromagnesium silicate) and heavy detrital minerals at the sites. Detrital minerals including the aluminosilicates are major factors in the elemental compositions at ES05, diluting the REE contents. However, clay minerals and Fe-oxyhydroxides, as well as REE-enriched heavy minerals, appeared to be controlling factors of the elemental composition at ES11. Therefore, the mineral fractionation process is important in determining the elemental composition during sedimentation, which reflects the depositional condition of riverine-saline water mixing at both sites.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate salt marsh flora and vegetation in the mouth of Mankyeong river estuary area where has a project for Sea Man Geum Reclaimed Land so that we can foster a foundation on restoration of an ecological habitat, development of applicable plants and establishment of a conservation policy after developing the reclaimed land for salt marsh vegetation which has great ecological value. As a result of this research, there are 10 families 25 genera 29 species and 3 varieties of vascular plants in the Mankyong-river estuary area. These are 0.76% among 4,191 of Korean vascular plants. There are also 5 families 6 genera 6 species and 1 varietiy of the naturalized plants which are 7 taxa in total and 3.85% of indicators of naturalized plants. Firstly, a district of low tide marsh has below 5% of vegetation coverage of Suaeda japonica and the vegetation cover was increasing rapidly while moving to a place of high tide marsh which is in the direction to a bank. In general, a range of from low tide marsh to high tide marsh is distributed with sequence of Suaeda japonica$\rightarrow$Suaeda maritima$\rightarrow$Suaeda japonica$\rightarrow$Aster tripolium$\rightarrow$Artemisia scoparia$\rightarrow$Carex scabrifolia$\rightarrow$Zoysia sinica$\rightarrow$Phragmites australis$\rightarrow$Phacelurus latifolius. Suaeda japonica has the highest dominance among the species composition and Aster tripolium, Phragmites australis, Artemisia scoparia, Carex scabrifolia and Phacelurus latifolius are distributed as zonation or patch. By the Z-M method eleven plant communities were recognized; Suaeda japonica, Suaeda japonica-Suaeda maritima, Suaeda maritima, Suaeda japonica-Aster tripolium, Aster tripolium, Phragmites australis, Carex scabrifolia, Phacelurus latifolius, Artemisia scoparia-Aster tripolium, Paspalum distichum var. indutum and Aster tripolium-Artemisia scoparia community. The actual vegetation map was constructed of the grounds of the communities classified and other data.

  • We estimated aboveground primary productivity of Salix nipponica based on biomass using allometry and basal area at Janghang wetland in Han River estuary. In addition, we estimated secondary production of sesarmine crab (Sesarma dehaani) living under the Salix community to interpret relationships between Salix nipponica and Sesarma dehaani. Salix nipponica showed primary productivity of 4,777 g DW $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, which appear to be the highest primary productivity in South Korea. The estimated amount of autochthonous organic matter from S. nipponica and allochthonous organic matter from the Han River into sediment was 359 g C $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$ and 347 g C $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, respectively. The secondary productivity of Sesarma dehaani was 100.2 g FW $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, which was 2.1% of the primary productivity of S. nipponica. The biomass of Sesarma dehanni was average 140 g FW $m^{-2}$, which consumed their prey of approximately 2,140 g FW $yr^{-1}$, which is equivalent to approximately 208 g C $m^{-2}yr^{-1}$.

  • The contamination loadings generated in Changwon City are coming into Masan Bay through the Bongam tidal flat except the loadings collected and transferred by sewer lines to the wastewater treatment plant. The recovery of waterbirds, shellfishes, and fishes has been quite well recognized in recent years after the first implementation of Masan Bay TPLM (Total Pollution Loads Management) in Korea. This tidal flat has been conserved by the cooperation of several stakeholders and utilized as an ecosystem field site for in situ education. A large industrial complex has been operated since 1970's, therefore increasing the level of pollutants in estuary and costal sediments, especially by heavy metals. Zinc, copper, and lesd contamination of sediment was revealed at higher level by Clean-up guideline (MOMAF) or heavily polluted level by SQC (USEPA). There was a significant difference between two sites at the 95% confidence level, which implies no homogeneity in the processes of transport and deposition even at 500 m of distance. The heavy metal concentrations in the Bongam sediments have been gradually decreased with comparing the data of 2006, and 2009.

  • Seasonal biomass and carbon, nitrogen contents change of marsh club-rush (Schoenoplectus trigueter) was investigated in Nakdong river estuary, located near Busan, Korea. New shoot of S. trigueter sprouted from tuber in April and fast growth season was followed until mature in August. Mature lengths of shoot and root were 60 and 9.4 cm, respectively. The increase of biomass showed similar seasonal trends with length. Mature biomass were $3.5gind^{-1}$ in wet weight and $0.6gind^{-1}$ in dry weight. The biomass of S. trigueter in areal basis was also highest during July and August ($186gDWm^{-2}$). The shoot of S. trigueter was disappeared in October from the ground but the biomass of shoot was maintained as a form of detritus in sediment. The amount of S. trigueter detritus was about 30~50% of the biomass in August. During winter, the amount of detritus decreased with time but the biomass of root+tuber remained same, implying the root+tuber part is alive. The net productivity of S. trigueter estimated from biomass change were $538gDWm^{-2}yr^{-1}$, $240g-Cm^{-2}yr^{-1}$, $8.2g-Nm^{-2}yr^{-1}$ in dry weight, carbon and nitrogen equivalent respectively. During winter, carbon to nitrogen ratio in detritus increased implying the preferred remineralization of nitrogen during microbial degradation.

  • Recently, various efforts and research are being conducted to integrated management of the estuary in Nakdong River. As one of such studies, measurement of opening discharge amount for each floodgate using a three-dimensional fixed ultrasonic flow meter is being conducted, but studies on hydraulic and statistical processing procedures and techniques using actual measurement results for calculating discharge amount by opening remain at the basic level. Therefore, in this study, a data processing technique using three-dimensional fixed ultrasonic flow meter measurement data was developed, the flow coefficient was calculated based on the measured data, and the applicability of the discharge amount calculation formula development was reviewed.

  • In this study, the flow characteristics of Han River Estuary were investigated by using a two-dimensional numerical model according to the assumption of shift and modification of the Shingok submerged weir. The two-dimensional analysis has contributed to our understanding of the hydraulic effects induced by shift of the weir on the topography, especially wetlands. The tide and flow discharge of 2007 were adopted as an input data for the simulation. The tidal data contained both spring and neap tide, and the flow discharge condition was divided into monsoon and normal seasons. The boundaries of this study were Hangang Bridge, Tongil Bridge, and Yu island. The simulation results showed that influence area of seawater changed depending on the weir shift, and the water level at particular station fluctuated according to the condition of tide and flow discharge.
