Temperature and salinity were observed in Kugum Suro Channel in February, April, August and October 1993. Temperature ranged from $7.0^{\circ}C\;to\;25.0^{\circ}C$ throughout the year and its variation was about $18^{\circ}C$. The maximum temperature difference between surface and bottom was less than $0.75^{\circ}C$ for a year, which meant that the temperature stratification in Kugum Suro Channel was considerably week. Salinity had also a small variation range of less than $0.5\%_{\circ}$. Salinity varied from $34.0\%_{\circ}$ in April to $30.0\%_{\circ}$ in August and its fluctuation patterns were quite similar to the seasonal variations of the precipitation and the duration of sunshine observed at Kohung Weather station. Seasonal variation of sea water density in T-S diagram showed that the water mass in Kugum Suro Channel could be largely affected by regional atmospheric conditions. Temperature increased in ebb tide and decreased in flood tide, but salinity decreased in ebb tide and increased in flood tide for a day. The period of fluctuations in temperature and salinity measured for 25 hours was nearly coincident with the semi-diurnal tide which was predominant in that region. Stratification parameters computed in Kugum Suro Channel areas were less than $4.0J/m^3$ the year round, which indicated that vortical mixing from the bottom boundary caused by tidal current played an important role in deciding the stratification regime in Kugum Suro Channel. In estimating the equation which defines stratification and mixing effects in the observed areas, the tidal mixing term ranged from $4.7J/M^3\;to\;14.1J/m^3$ was greater than any other terms like solar radiation, river discharge and wind mixing.

To assess the influence of environmental factors on the phytoplankton community structure and total phytoplankton biomass during four seasons in 2014, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors at 25 stations in the Busan coastal region. The phytoplankton community and total phytoplankton biomass were strongly dependent on the discharge from the Nakdong River, and the high density of phytoplankton was related with the introduction of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), particularly in the thermohaline fronts of the fall season. The relationship between the salinity and nutrient (Dissolved inorganic nitrogen=DIN: R2=0.72, p<0.001 and Dissolved inorganic silicon=DSi: R2=0.78, p<0.001) highly correlated with the river discharge, implying that those nutrients have played a crucial role in the growth of diatom and cryptophyta. The total phytoplankton biomass was highest in the summer followed by autumn, spring, and winter. Diatom and cryptophyta species were dominant species during the four seasons. Additionally, there were strong positive correlations between Chlorophyll a and total phytoplankton biomass (R2=0.84, p<0.001), cryptophyta (R2=0.76, p<0.001) and diatom (R2=0.50, p<0.001), respectively. In particular, we found that there were significant differences in the nutrients, phytoplankton community compositions, and total phytoplankton biomass between the inner and the outer coastal region of Busan, depending on the amount of river discharge from the Nakdong River, particularly during rainy seasons. Therefore, the seasonal change of TWC and river discharge from the Nakdong River serve an important role in determining phytoplankton population dynamics in the Busan coastal region.

A recording current meter was deployed in the shallow western part of Deukryang Bay from 1 July to 7 August 1992 during which the wind was weak. Principal component in NNE-SSW direction parallel to the axis of the bay had $98.7\%$ of the total variance and the orthogonal component of only $1.3\%$. Spectral analysis of the principal component revealed that the semidiurnal component comprised about $91.2\%$ of total energy. Whereas the diurnal and longer components were less than $2.5\%$ the shallow water tide was about $6.3\%$ . Weak mean current of 0,8cm/sec in SSE direction implies that the slow circulation in the bay is counterclockwise having the northward net flow in the deep eastern part.
CTD, light transmission and tidal current data obtained off the Keum estuary in August, 1991 and 1992 were analyzed to look into the plume movement and the vertical structure of the plume changing with tidal currents. When the river plume was developed by a localized torrential downpour, the initial plume showed a surface lens of low salinity in the section south of the Yeon-Do. The axis of surface lens moved with tidal currents which flows mainly northeastward and southwestward tn the study area and the excursion of the lens axis reached 7 km. The plume during the ebb period showed a symmetric lens structure of low salinity which extends vertically to 3 m below the surface. During the flood period the plume deepened to 6 m below the surface in its northen side forming a sharp salinity front, which results in an asymmetric lens. We suggest that the salinity front with deepened plume moved to the north repeatedly, resulting in temperature increase and salinity decrease in the northern region off the estuary. When the river discharged continuously the large volume over 20 days, the plume forming surface lens extended to the Sybidongpa-Do and deflected to the north.
The formation and structure of tidal front in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea were studied based on the oceanographic data compiled during the periods of $1982{\sim}1983$ and $1966{\sim}1970$. Well-defined fronts occurring in the Yellow Sea in summer mark the boundary between the stratified and vertically mixed regimes. The occurrence of vertically mixed regimes may be interpreted in terms of available turbulent kinematic energy of tidal currents. The tidal frontal regions were determined by horizontal gradients of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, and were verified by water colour and transparency. In summer the tidal fronts were found at depths of $15{\sim}25m$ at about 20 miles from the shore. Potential energy of vortical stratification in the tidal frontal region was 10 $Joule/m^3$. The stratification parameter in the frontal region computed from the numerical tidal model was $S_p=1.0.$ Tidal front is formed in regions with $S_p=1-1.5,$ if surface heat flux are constant. Waters in the stratified region have the layer structures of wind-mixed surface layer, thermocline and tidal-mixed bottom layer. In the vertically mixed region, however, sea water is nearly homogeneous. in winter no distinctive tidal front was seen.

The spatiotemporal distribution of resuspended solid on the shelf of the southern Yellow Sea and the northern East China Sea was studied. The sea surface reflectance imageries obtained by remote sensing using satellite at channels of red (620~670nm), green(545~565nm) and blue(459~479nm) from Terra MODIS were used to explain the front of the high concentration suspended solid(SS) on the shelf in the East China Sea. The horizontal distribution of the resuspended solid was depended on the wind force, tidal current and stratification of water. The horizontal distribution areas of the resuspended solid in winter season during January~April, 2002 were three times wider than those in summer season during June~September, 2001.
Algal growth potential test (AGPT) has been used as a tool for assessing biological productivity potential in the aquatic ecosystems. This study was conducted to compare the productivity potentials of large reservoirs (Lakes Andong, Hapchon and Jinyang, and Naktong estuarine dam) and river sites (Sangju, Koryung, and Samlangjin) located in the Naktong River watershed. AGPT was conducted in both non-monsoon and mosoon season (February, April, July and September) of 2003, using Microcystis aeruginosa as a test alga. The AGPs in the reservoirs were relatively much lower than those of river sites. The river AGPs increased towards upstream close to the influent streams, while it generally decreased towards downstream. Immediately after the abrupt increase in influent discharge in summer, the AGP became similar between midstream and downstream sites. The water quality of river and reservoirs deteriorated during the drought period in accordance with AGP: it was the highest during this period. The AGPs showed the closest correlation with the P concentration, leading to the conclusion that bioavailable P is highly influential to the algal growth in both lentic and lotic ecosystems in the Naktong River watershed. Based on the AGPs, the water quality of tested sites was likely eutrophic. Our results suggest that AGPT be a useful tool in evaluating the productivity potential and trophic state of the water body as well as determining the nutrients that limit the growth of algae.
The phytoplankton ecology of estuarine waters was investigated in the Kyeonggi Bay from May 1981 to September 1982 on monthly basis. In this study area, a total of 228 phytoplankton species was identified. Among these taxa, the most dominant species are diatoms in this area. Tychopelagic plankton occupies 40.4% of total species. The percentage of tychopelagic plankton density ranged from 10.2% in September to 92.7% in March of monthly standing crops. From late autumn to early spring, the percentage values are more than 72%. They play an important role from late autumn to early spring in this estuarine plandton community. These tychopelagic planktons are induced from benthic diatoms. Because the bottom shear stresses generated by the tides and winds are stronger than the adhesive and tractive force of benthic diatoms, most of benthic diatoms must be resuspended into tychopelagic suspensions during autumn and winter. Paralia sulcata is the most important tychopelagic plankton as an indicator species of water mixing in the eastern coastal area of Yellow Sea. This species seems to have even broader tolerance to the environmental stress than Skeletonema costalum, and tends to fill the gaps in winter, when the phytoplandton is relatively unsuccessful. Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros debilis are dominant in other seasons. Typical blooms of phytoplankton occur in spring and early autumn, The first bloom is started by Skeletonema costatum in early May, second peak is formed by various diatom population in September.
Seasonal changes of the phytoplankton and the periphyton community were investigated from August 1998 to April 1999 at five stations at the Suer stream in Kwangyang. A total of 112 species of phytoplankton were identified. Of those, the diatoms were present at all stations but the green algae, the bluegreen algae, and the dioflagellates were present at Station 4 and Station 5 more frequently than the other stations. The phytoplankton standing crops varied from 10,100 cells/1 at Station 4 in April 1999 to 1,489,100 cells/1 at Station 4 in October 1998. The seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton standing crops were different among stations as well as the pattern of presence. The dominant species were as follows: Achnanthes minutissima, Aulacoseira distans v. alpigena, Cocconeis placentula v. lineata, Cymbella minuta, C. silesiaca, Fragilaria arcus v. recta, Peridinium cinctum, Rhizosofenia longiseta, Synedra rumpens and filamentous algae. Of those, Achnanthes minutissima, Rhizosolenia longiseta, Synedra rumpens and filamentous algae showed the highest rate of occupation in the phytoplankton standing crops during the investigated periods. A total of 99 species of periphyton were identified. Among those, the diatoms of the periphyton community were observed frequently rather than those of the phytoplankton community. The ecological indicator values showed ${\bate}$-mesosaprobous in saprobity and was close to eutraphentic in trophic state. There were no considerable differences between the ecological indicator values by planktonic diatoms and periphytic diatoms.
For a biological assessment of Pyeongtaek Reservoir and its major influent streams, an algal growth potential test (AGPT) was conducted with the blue-green algae Microcystis aeruginosa in March, June, September and December, 2000. The range and average value of AGPT were from 0 to 463 mg dw/l and 90 mg dw/l, respectively. For the influent streams in particular, the average of AGPT was the in the Hwangguchi Stream (343 mg dw/l). It decreased to 158, 66, 29, 21, and 21 mg dw/l in the Sojong Stream, Songhwan Stream, Osan Stream, Chinwi Stream, and Ansong Stream, respectively. The AGPT values in the reservoir ranged from 0 to 138 mg dw/1(mean 54 mg dw/1) with a tendency to increase in the upstream, which was close to the influent streams. In general, the AGPT values decreased further in the downstream. Immediately after the abrupt increase in influent discharge in summer, the AGPT value in the downstream almost doubled due to the proliferation of blue-green algae. The water quality of Pyeongtaek Reservoir and its influent streams further deteriorated during the drought period. Similarly, the AGPT value was the highest during this period. The AGPT values showed the closest correlation with the content of P (r = 0.999, p<0,001). Thus, it could be concluded that the content of P is highly effective in the growth of algae. In the Pyeongtaek Reservoir Watershed, the AGPT values varied in space and time. It was also closely related to the nutrient content of influent streams. The AGPT values revealed that the water quality state was hypertrophic (> 20 mg dw/1). Thus, control of the aquatic environment is essential. AGPT is very useful in evaluating the fertility and pollution state of the water as well as determining the nutrients that limit the growth of algae.
