최근의 현대 건축에서는 재료의 물성과 구축성이 두드러지는 프로젝트를 많이 발견할 수 있다. 이러한 경향의 배경에는 사양한 요인들이 있을 수 있다. 그 중에서도 공간성(性)에 대한 근본적이고 회귀가 중요한 바탕이라고 할 수 있다. 피터 줌터의 건축은 현란한 조형적 효과, 표현만을 위한 기술적 장식을 사용하지 않는다. 대신 그의 건축은 장소와의 관계, 문화적 context 상에서의 맥락, 그리고 공간의 근원적인 경험을 주요한 매체로 사용한다. 그리고 이러한 특수성은 대체적으로 빛과 재료의 고유한 적용으로 나타난다. 이는 장소와 문화의 특성을 관습적인 형태나 화려한 표현으로 재현하는 것이 아니라 '공간감'의 구현으로 구축하는 방식이다. 본 논문은 피터 줌터의 건축에 나타나는 빛과 재료의 구축 방식, 그리고 공간의 경험에 대하여 살펴본다. 그의 건축 구축 방식은 일견 간단해 보일 수도 있으나 실제로는 프로젝트마다 고유한 빛과 재료의 적용과 텍토닉(tectonic)이 내재되어 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 점들을 자세히 살펴보고 그러한 구축방식이 궁극적으로 어떻게 공간의 경험과 관계를 하는지 고찰하는 것에 있다. 구체적인 사례는 Bruder Klaus Chapel과 Kolumba Museum으로 한정된다. 프로그램은 다르지만 빛을 사용하여 관람자의 공간경험과 공간인지가 어떻게 형성되는지를 다루면서 결론 맺는다.

Even though the importance of emotional aspects in design has been discussed and researched actively, researches mainly focusing on the emotional aspects expressed through architectural materials have been rare. Thus, Previous researches were investigated to draw typical categories to express emotional characteristics through architectural materiality. Case study shows Zumthor's practical methodologies in these state: tectonic expression with creative tectonic methods and local residents' voluntary-participation in construction; enhancement of intimate emotional ties with the local heritage through the usage of local materials and traditional construction techniques; coexistence of past and present materials, and showing the change of materiality via weathering; activation of synesthesia by touching multiple senses; sustainability by using environment friendly materials and construction methods. The results can be hopefully helpful to future researches related to emotional aspects on spatial design.

The aim of this study is in emphasizing the importance of the use of material and the tectonic and their influence on the spatial quality by analyzing Peter Zumthor's projects as case studies. In the research, Zumthor's choice of material, construction method (detail and structure) and the relationship with the context were analyzed in order to illustrate Zumthor's approach in making a strong tie with the locality. Three of Zumthor's projects of different sizes and programs were chosen to heighten the sensitivity of Zumthor's unique working method for each project. Peter Zumthor's architecture is neither superficial nor visually complex. On the contrary, he aims to express through the use of material and construction method, a unique relationship with the physical context, social context and most importantly the actual experience of the space itself. This study aims to contribute towards increasing the awareness and the interest in the materiality and the tectonics which are the fundamentals in spatial experience and spatial identity.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$ characteristics to direct an emotional atmosphere. It also analyzed whether these characteristics are reflected in how the work of Peter Zumthor. First, a theoretical consideration base on the distinction between montage and mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$, the research on space directing techniques in film. In particular, research on the mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$ around the technique of deep focus, long-take, charade. It also examines the mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$ tendencies that appear in the painting art, philosophy and psychology to deepen understanding. It should understand the mechanism by going to complete the meaning. Based on this, in terms of mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$ to analyze the space directing of Peter Zumthor. And the features of mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$ has its significance in having a look at whether there is any correlation in the 'Atmospheres' directing of Zumthor. As a result, the mise-en-$sc{\acute{e}}ne$ is active, multi-layered, ambiguous, uncertain, becoming and enables an open interpretation in terms of audience.

The Therme Vals is a hotel and spa which combines a complete sensory experience designed by Peter Zumthor. This study aims to find emotional design approaches of the Therme Vals through references, observation from site visit, interview and discussion related to this topic. This space was designed for visitors to luxuriate and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. The combinations of light and shade, open and enclosed spaces and linear elements make for a highly sensuous and restorative experience. The study observed the emotional design characteristics of the Therme Vals through space approach, aesthetic and experiential sides. For space approach side, emotional experience in gradual process to approach the space was mentioned, for aesthetic side, mystical combination of light, stone and water was observed, for experiential side, 5 senses experience and space programing for adjusting the density of the space were observed. This study found that the spa has the quality of spiritual, soul-touching delight like religious experience. The fascination for the mystic qualities of a world of stone within the mountain, for darkness and light, for light reflections on the water or in the steam saturated air, pleasure in the unique acoustics of the bubbling water in a world of stone, the ritual of bathing-all these notions were explained in Peter Zumthor's construction details. In the result of the interview and discussion, people love the space and praised it highly for the emotional design regardless of space experience, age, sex or ethnicity. Emotional design approaches based on human nature, materiality, and memory of the places is more powerful than other emotional design ideas with technical devices, special themes, digital effects, vivid colors and shapes.

The philosophers think that the increase of loneliness in technological society is caused by the reduced feeling to some extent. They started to think the integral feeling in terms of existentialism away from Visualcentrism. It is apparent that in architectural design a concrete feeling(sense) out of Visualcentrism of modern architecture is reflected in a architecture. In particular, the architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Steven Holl, Peter Zumthor, Kuma Kengo think that the existential value of the objects is important and would like to reflect the existence of materials on architecture. This study is to analyze the common points and different points regarding how in these works sensible experiences are approached. The results show that these works have common features containing escape from visual formativeness in the space, pursuit of locational connection, study on pure essence of the materials, and reflectance of the feeling of depth and motility. In addition, the actual beings of the materials for this feeling were mainly used and showed some difference in terms of the usage of local materials, natural environment, five senses of body. This study is important in the point of view that there are few researches that compared with the characteristics of architects' works while there were many researched that treated architecture as sensible view.

The development of modern industry and the production of new materials of architecture have recognized as an important aspect. This study intended to discuss about the meaning of main elements of the architecture materials, its implications for properties, and, highlighted meaning of the properties of modern interior design. The purpose of this study is to analyze the case studies of Place and Physical materials of synaesthesia of modern architecture as well as modern architecture is not only concentrated in the visual aspect but also the larger ramifications of sensory. Synesthesia in architectural space can be called experiential existence that built in the space of human perception and based on the human emotion that targeted by physical architectural space. Accordingly, these case studies are to consider about how the materials being passed by any effect in a modern interior space presented, In order to find the essential meaning in modern interior space, this studies focused on Swiss architect Peter Zumthor's cases. Following analyze of Peter Zumthor's place of architectural space and materials, this study structured by the six kinds of synesthesia characters. First, time and remember to infer changes, Second, traditional and regional ingredients involve the substitution of one empirical space, Third, non-materiality through the neutralization, Fourth, auditory memory through the embodiment of everydayness, Fifth, trail through the sense of smell for the presence, Sixth, the relationship of natural and industrial products. Peter Zumthor's characteristics of these works are result of factors on the synesthetic relationship with the human response to architecture, the five senses, memories, experiences, and temperature. Also it is a synesthetic result of all human emotion to clarify of the architecture materials and non-material mediums by which light by a compound.
