In this study, the antioxidative effects, inhibitory effects on tyrosinase and elastase of Rhododendron brachycarpum D. Don extracts were investigated. And the moisturizing effect of cream containing R. brachycarpum D. Don extract were investigated by clinical trial. The ethyl acetate fraction of R. brachycarpum D. Don extract (1.83 ${\mu}g/mL$) showed the most prominent the free radical (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) scavenging activity ($FSC_{50}$). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities ($OSC_{50}$) of R. brachycarpum D. Don extracts on ROS generated in $Fe^{3+}$-EDTA/$H_2O_2$ system were investigated using the luminol-dependent chemiluminescence assay. The 50 % extract fraction (0.064 ${\mu}g/mL$) showed the most prominent ROS scavenging activity. The protective effects of extract/fractions of R. brachycarpum D. Don on the rose-bengal sensitized photohemolysis of human erythrocytes were investigated. The R. brachycarpum D. Don extracts suppressed photohemolysis in a concentration dependent manner (1 ~ 10 ${\mu}g/mL$). The inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) of R. brachycarpum D. Don extracts on tyrosinase were determined with ethyl acetate fraction of R. brachycarpum D. Don extract (70.5 ${\mu}g/mL$) and aglycone fraction of extract (122.40 ${\mu}g/mL$). The inhibitory effects ($IC_{50}$) on elastase were determined with ethyl acetate of R. brachycarpum D. Don extract (43.50 ${\mu}g/mL$) and aglycone fraction of extract (20.73 ${\mu}g/mL$). The cream containing the ethyl acetate fraction of R. brachycarpum D. Don extracts was formulated for skin hydration effect and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The cream containing R. brachycarpum D. Don extract was applied to the right lower arm. After 180 min, the water contents in skin were increased by 1 ~ 4 % than the placebo cream. And TEWL of parts was decreased as 7.7 $g/m^2h$ (experimental cream) and 8.9 $g/m^2h$ (placebo cream) respectively. These results indicate that extract/fractions of R. brachycarpum D. Don can function as antioxidants in biological systems, particularly skin exposed to UV radiation by scavenging $^1O_2$ and other ROS, and protect cellular membranes against ROS. And inhibitory activity on tyrosinase of the aglycone fraction could be applicable to new functional cosmetics for whitening and anti-wrinkle products. Also the increase of skin hydration of the cream containing extract could be applicable to new functional cosmetics for antiaging.

In this study, we created pupal stage extracts of Apis mellifera L. drones for use in cosmetic materials. The effect of the drone pupae extract (DPE) on HDF cells was assessed for analysis of anti-wrinkle activity by collagen or collagenase gene expression, and the skin-lightening effect was studied by in vitro tyrosinase inhibition and B16F10 melanoma assay; the two cells were found to be non-cellular when the concentration of DPE was 100 ㎍/ml. Albutin concentration (positive control) in the whitening test was set at a capacity of 100 ug/ml and m-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). A melanin-producing induction material was set at a concentration of 100 nM, and the expression of collagen type I and MMP1 collagenase was measured using HDF cells. MMP1 expression was seen to reduce in a concentration-dependent manner in treatment with DPE. Inhibiting melanin generation with B16F12 cells indicated a tendency to decrease in the DPE treatment group. Both L-Tyrosine and L-DOPA as DPE were used in an in vitro tyrosinase induction test to demonstrate the effects of tyrosinase suppression on concentrations. The higher the concentration of DPE, the greater the wrinkle reduction and whitening effect. In conclusion, it was found that DPE is an effective smoothing and whitening material by increasing collagen generation and inhibiting collagenase expression and reducing melanin production.

Recently, the number of customers who want natural cosmetics without petroleum originated cosmetic ingredients is increasing over the world, however, there are few natural cosmetics that claim functionality in the products. Because there are few functional cosmetic ingredients from nature and though so, it is very difficult to stabilize the final products manufactured by using those functional cosmetic ingredients in the long period. This study is on stabilization of oleanolic acid, insoluble anti-wrinkle cosmetic ingredients from nature, with hydrogenated lecithin in the solubilization product, aiming for developing a formulation of solubilization products which can be certified as organic cosmetics. In case of other synthetic solubilizers, they showed unstability at $45^{\circ}C$ within 2 ~ 3 days, however, for natural origin hydrogenated lecithin a stable product was made without particle size change during 4 weeks. The stability of oleanolic acid in the solubilization product was measured for 24 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, both samples showed over 90 wt% value of the initial one, which can prove that oleanolic acid was stabilized in the product without any degradation. Also through clinical tests, the effect of moisturizing, anti-wrinkle, safety were confirmed.
objectives: We investigated the moisturizing and cooling effects of the cosmetic product with Scrophularia Buergeriana, Poria Cocos, Lonicera Japonica, Portulaca Oleracea and Ginko Biloba extract on human skin by using non-invasive instrument. Methods: We measured physiological effects after volunteers(female, n=5) applied the cosmetic product containing the extract of oriental herbs. The forearm skin moisturization was measured with $Corneometer^{\circledR}$ CM825 after 15min, 3hr, and 6hr. The forearm skin surface roughness was with Scanning electron microscopy after 15min, and 6hr. The face skin temperatures cooling and microcirculation effects were measured with ThermaCAMTM PM525 and LDl-Periscan PlM II after 15min, and 30min. Results: The forearm skin moisturization was imcreased 108% after 15min. The forearm skin surface roughness was decreased significantly after 15min. The face skin temperatures were cooling down to $30.7^{\circ}C$. The face skin microcirculation effect was normalized time-dependently. Conclusions: We concluded that cosmetic product containing the extract of Scrophularia Buergeriana, Poria Cocos, Lonicera Japonica, Portulaca Oleracea and Ginko Biloba had a moisturization effect and improving the surface roughness, temperature and microcirculation on the human skin.
For the experiment, to develop new materials for cosmetics, the Celosia cristata L. plant ethanol extract were used for physiological effect and cosmetics application research. The Celosia cristata L. is a Korean traditional variety grown. To investigate the effect of Ethanol extract of Celosia cristata L. on skin care, we measured anti-oxidant activity and anti-aging activity. Celosia cristata L. ethanol extract itself had anti-oxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner in 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging. Ethanol extract had anti-oxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. Silica dose-dependently increased the intracellular ROS generation in RAW 264.7 cells. Celosia cristata L. ethanol extract inhibited silica-induced intracellular superoxide anion generation and $H_2O_2$ generation and hydro-peroxide generation in RAW 264.7 cells. For anti-aging effects, the hyaluronidase inhibition effects, were relatively strong and they also showed elastase activity inhibition effects, which suggesting the Celosia cristata L. ethanol extract might be used as hydration and anti-wrinkle agents. From the above results, it is referred that Celosia cristata L. ethanol extract appears to have potent anti-oxidant activity and anti-aging activity.

The study is on the cosmetic solubilizing power of organic plant surfactants. The blended high purity polyglyceryl-10 oleate and polyglyceryl-10 stearate mixtures were synthesized using organically certified raw materials to develop surfactants having excellent solubilizing power. The mixture is called "Solubil ORG-1300". The appearance of this material is a pale yellowish paste, with a specific odor. The specific gravity was 1.12 and it was high purity that acid value was 0.072±0.1. The HLB value of this natural surfactant was averaged = 15.1 and calculated through the Griffin equation. Mechanically it is explained how organic surfactant are available with fragrance and oils. The solubilizing test was determined by eye evaluation method through the dissolving performance test for the two oils and measured the transmittance at 890 nm using a UV spectrophotometer to measure the transparency. The results showed that the concentration of surfactant needed to make Bergamot oil available requires approximately more 2 times. It was also found that the concentration of surfactant needed to make the tocoperyl acetate available was about 8 times higher. Experiments on the solubility resulting from pH changes showed stabilized usable solubilizing power even in acidic areas of pH=3.5, neutral areas of pH=7.2, and alkaline areas of pH=1.5. Experiments on the solubility according to pH variation showed good solubility stabilized in acidic areas of pH=3.5, neutral areas of pH=7.2, and alkaline areas of pH=11.5. As an application of cosmetics, the company successfully developed a prescription for moisturizing activity based on these results, it is expected that a wide range of applications will be available for skin care, baby lotion, sensitivity or atopic skin cosmetics.

Natural safflower oleosomes are small ($1{\sim}3{\mu}m$) spherical shaped "reservoir", inside which the seed stores triglycerides for use as a future energy source. The surface of the oleosome is covered with a high molecular weight ($20{\sim}24$ KDa) oleosin protein which has been demonstrated to have emulsification properties. Traditionally, oleosomes from oil bearing seeds such as safflower were simply crushed to liberate the oil within. Our patented DermaSphere technology allows for the isolation of oleosomes in the intact state. Once isolated, these materials can be used in skin care formulations to deliver the emolliency, occlusivity, and anti-oxidant effects typically associated with safflower oil. However, because of the presence of the emulsifying oleosin protein covering the spherical oil body, oleosomes have self-emulsification property as well as can emulsify other oil phase in typical oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. The oleosomes can literally serve as the entire non-active portion of the oil phase of a typical skin care product. Most importantly, natural oleosomes can be loaded with other oil-soluble active materials and can therefore be used as delivery systems for improved cosmetic efficacies. Oleosomes can be loaded with various actives, such as fragrances, vitamins, inset repellents, and UV chromophores. The loaded oleosomes can be utilized to either protect the active ingredients within the formulation itself or to allow for control release of those actives over time.
In this study, six kinds of rice grown in Cheongwon area were extracted using glycolytic and proteolytic enzymes, and also antioxidant effects and water holding capacity of rice protein extracts were compared and analyzed. Protein contents of rice cultivars protein extract showed that black rice (BR) extract was the highest at 4,900 ㎍/mL, and flavored brown rice (FBR) extract was the lowest at 3,700 ㎍/mL. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate free radical scavenging activity was confirmed the superior activity of more than 80.0% at a concentration of 2 mg/mL with BR and red brown rice (RBR) extracts. 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity at a concentration of 2 mg/mL with BR and RBR extracts was more than 70.0% The water holding capacity for extracts using RBR, red-kerneled brown rice (RKBR), BR and FBR was more than 110.0%. Overall, the rice protein extract using BR has excellent antioxidant and water holding capacity which can be used as a potential skin moisturizer and antioxidant functional cosmetic material.

Melaleuca alternifolia contains terpineol-4, cineol, sesquiterpenes etc., and has a germicidal effect and skin moisturizing effect. It also has the characteristics of relieving acne inflammation, treating dandruff, relieving pain, and relieving depression. In this study, an antimicrobial substance extracted from tea tree using an organic solvent (methanol, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate) and hydrothermal extraction method. And confirmed the antimicrobial activity of each extract. In order to verify the antimicrobial activity, nine pathogenic bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) were used. The antimicrobial activity of each extracts were confirmed by the commonly used disc diffusion method. The results showed that the fraction extracts of ethyl acetate and methanol had antimicrobial effects against V. parahaemolyticus and S. aureus. Using these results, we confirmed the antimicrobial activity of each fraction extracts and hot water extracts against V. parahaemolyticus. After the treat of samples, we confirmed at over 99.9 % of antimicrobial activity. In case of antifungal activities, we confirmed of preservation effect during over 45 hours. Based on the results of this research, further studies will be conducted to confirm the possibility of development as a new antimicrobial agent.
This study evaluated the characteristics of rice cookies with varying amounts (0, 250, 500, and 750 mg) of dandelion complex powder. Dandelion powder is considered a functional food with skin-moisturizing and atopic skin improvement effects by KFDA. Quality characteristics of AF343 and rice cookies were measured by determining antimicrobial activities, physical characteristics, sensory evaluation values, and antioxidant activities. An antibiotic susceptibility test of the powder showed positive activities in Escherichia coli (O157:H7), Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, and Listeria monocytogenes. Rice cookie containing 250-500 mg powder showed significantly increased antioxidant activities compared to controls (p<0.05). However, sensory intensities between the two sample groups were not significantly different. Thus, rice cookies containing 250-500 mg dandelion complex powder were successfully developed to improve antioxidant and antimicrobial qualities. These products may attract the attention of health-conscious consumers in the highly competitive cookie industry.
