  • We investigate new polyols based on castor oil for polyurethane. In order to introduce primary alcohol groups, which exhibit higher reactivity with isocyanate than secondary alcohol groups, the secondary alcohol groups on castor oil were modified with maleic anhydride and aminoalcohol derivatives ($H_2N$-R-OH). The reactions with various molar ratio of castor oil and maleic anhydride were done at relatively low reaction temperature in the absence of catalyst. The polyols based on castor oil with flexible side-chains exhibit better miscibility with conventional synthetic polyols.

  • The enzymatic hydrolysis of Castor oil for the mass production of ricinoleic acid was studied to find out the optimum conditions such as solvents and the weight ratio of substrate to enzyme. Three different lipases were tested for the hydrolysis of castor oil: lipase from Porcine Pancrease(lipsase PP), lipase from Candida cylindracea(lipase CC), lipase from Candida Rugosa(lipase CR). The poor mass transfer in water caused a low degree of hydrolysis of castor oil. To overcome this problem, organic solvents were used. Among organic solvents tested, hydrophobic solvents gave better results of hydrolysis than hydrophilic solvents. Organic solvents also lowered or changed the effect of pH. Isopropyl ether made complete hydrolysis of castor oil. The ratio of water to isopropyl ether and the ratio of weight ratio of lipase to castor oil were important for the hydrolysis of castor oil. At 30$^{\circ}C$ castor oil was completely hydrolyzed by 4 wt% of lipase in the mixture of isopropyl ether and water(1:1 in volume).

  • The characteristics of enzymatic methanolysis of castor oil were investigated as a clean technology. Among 16 lipases tested in this study, Novozym 435 showed the highest activity in methanolysis. Solvents had different effects on the methanolysis of castor oil according to weight percent (wt%) of Novozym 435. Heptane showed best activity with 1 wt% of Novozym 435, while isopropyl ether gave the best yield of ricinoleic acid methyl ester with 0.5 wt% of that. Ricinoleic acid methyl ester was obtained in 86% of yield through the methanolysis of castor oil catalyzed by Novozym 435 (1.0 wt%) during 24hr.

  • Unmodified castor oil (CO) was used to obtain a castor-based aqueous polyurethane (CPUD) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was used to obtain a transparent film. The mixing effect of polypropyleneglycole (PPG) was analyzed to increase flexibility. In addition, ethylenediamine (EDA) was used as a chain extender. Tensile strength, elongation, and abrasion resistance were measured according to the change according to the castor oil content and the change in the chain extender, respectively. The tensile strength of the sample containing a lot of castor oil was 1.112 kgf/㎟, and the elongation was 88%. The tensile strength of the sample containing a lot of chain extender was 3.33kgf/㎟, and the elongation was 99%. The surface strength was visually confirmed through SEM. The surface strength was visually confirmed through SEM.

  • The cure behavior of epoxy resin with a conventional amide-type hardener(HD) was investigated in the presence of castor oil(CO), cashew nut shell liquid(CNSL) and CNSL-formaldehyde resin(CFR) by using a dynamic differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The activation energy of curing reaction was also calculated based on the non-isothermal DSC thermograms at various heating rates. An one-stage curing was noted in the case of epoxy resin filled with CO, while the epoxy resin with CNSL and CFR showed a two-stage curing process. A competitive cure reaction was noted for the epoxy resin/CNSL(or CFR)/HD blends. In the absence of HD, the CFR showed lower values of curing enthalpy than that of CNSL. The activation energy of epoxy resin curing increased with increasing the CNSL and CFR loading.

  • Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) are defined as substances that are likely to create a significant impact on human health and marine ecosystem when they are released into the marine environment. Recently, as the volume of HNS transported by ships increases, the rate of leakage accidents also increases. Therefore, research should be conducted to control and monitor sunken materials from the viewpoint of technology development for hazardous material leakage accident response. In this paper, acoustic detection experiments were carried out using HNS substitute materials in order to confirm the possibility of acoustic detection of sunken HNS on the sediment. The castor oil, which has a similar acoustic impedance with chloroform, is used as a substitute. 200 kHz high frequency signals were used to discriminate the reflected signals and measure reflection loss from the interface between water and castor oil. The reflection loss measured is in good agreement with the modeling results, showing a possibility of acoustic detection for sunken HNS.

  • Polyurethane foams were synthesized by substituting a portion of petroleum base polyether polyol with castor oil-derived polyol(COP). Contact angle tester and surface tensionmeter were used to examine the compatibility of petroleum base polyether polyol and COP. To investigate the optimum content of COP and surfactant, the content of COP has been changed from 0 wt% to 80 wt%. From the results of polyurethane foams synthesized by surfactant L-580K, DC-5950 and BF-2470, the best mechanical properties was observed when the content of COP was 30wt% and surfactant BF-2470.

  • The thesis covers the trend of research on bio-based polyurethane which is made from polyols derived mainly from plant oils and isocyanates. Castor oil is a triglyceride of ricinoleic acid containing hydroxyl group. Hydroxylation is done on the unsaturated bonds of the oils by the reactions of epoxidation/ring opening, hydroformylation/hydrogenation, ozonolysis/hydrogenation, and thiol-ene reaction. Polyols from hyperbranch, primary alcohol, polysaccharide have been studied to control the reactivity of the polyol and morphology of the microdomains. Besides, researches cover biodegradable polylactic acid polyol for medical use, fatty acid dimer polyol for the prevention of hydrolysis, and polyol with ionic group for water-borne polyurethane. Bio-based polyurethanes are being used in flexible and rigid foams, coatings, sealants, and elastomers.
