  • Many different damage models have been prolxlsed for concrete in the past. Most of these are not well suited to predict the residual strength of damaged RC members. This paper reviews some basic facts alxlut concrete damage and uses these to systematically model damage as a low-cycle fatigue phenomenon. Instead of the number of load cycles to failure the energy dissipation capacity of a member is taken as the main variable, which depends on many different factors. The model is capable of simulating reasonably well the strength and stiffness degradation of I{C members subjected to strong cyclic loads.

  • For the $\beta$=1 specimen with constant thickness, Crack growth rate is smoothly increasing in the a-N curve. On the other hand for $\beta$=2 specimen with various thickness, the inflection point is observed in crack growth rate near the thickness interface. da/dN before the inflection point is increased, and da/dN after the point is decreased, compared to the $\beta$=1 specimen. da/dN near the thickness interface is approached zero. The descending point was observed earlier as $\beta$ increased. Considering the relation between da/dN and λ, the crack propagation rates for the case of $\beta$ =1 incrased almost linearly, however, the crack propagation rates for $\beta$=2,3 decreased more rapidly near the thickness interface. Additionally, the decreased point in da/dN for $\beta$=3 is farther from the thickness interface than the case for $\beta$ =2.

  • Effects of temperature on fatigue resistance of crack zone in concrete members repaired by injecting epoxy resin was experimentally studied. First, a fatigue machine that produces small movement similar to those observed in actual cracks was developed. It was made clear that the rise of temperature changes a mode of fracture at the repaired zone and sharply dropped fatigue resistance.

  • This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of angle-ply laminates with non-woven carbon tissue. The lami- nates were made by inserting non-woven carbon tissue at the interface. Specimens were rounded near the tabs by grinding and polishing to reduce the stress concentration. Cyclic loads were applied to the specimens and the stress and fatigue life curves were obtained. The matrix crack density was also evaluated to check the effects of non-woven carbon tissue on the fracture resistance of composite laminates. C-Sean technique was used to evaluate the delamination, and SEM was used to understand the fracture mechanisms of the laminates. Experimental results show that the fatigue strength and life of composite laminates were increased by inserting non- woven carbon tissues. The results also show that the matrix crack density and delamination area were reduced by inserting non-woven carbon tissues.

  • This study has performed rotary bending fatigue testing that smooth specimen using SM45C materials and notched specimen whose radii were R6, R4 and R2, were processed in 3% NaCl aqueous solutions or in the air. The results are as followed; 1. In the air fatigue limit at 10$^{7}$ cycles remarkably reduced as notch radius goes small. 2. In 3% NaCl aqueous solution fatigue strength at 10$^{6}$ cycles also had large range of reduction as notch radius goes small. 3. Comparing fatigue strength in the air, fatigue strength at 10$^{6}$ cycles in 3% NaCl aqueous solution reduced by 46.2% at smooth specimen, 55.3% at R6 notch radius, 45.8% at R4 and 39.7% at R2 respectively. 4. The reason that fatigue strength reduced in the reduction of notch radius sire was because the surface of notch exposed in corrosion was small and consequently it was less corroded.

  • This paper deals with the behavior of surface crack growth and the characteristics of surface micro-crack distribution under creep and creep-fatigue with 1 min. and 10 min. of load holding times at 593.deg.C, in air. The test specimen is a plate type with a small artificial defect of type 304 the small defect has been carried out by the surface replica method and optical microphotography. The experimental results have been interpreted from the view-point of fracture mechanics. It can be concluded that the longer the hold time the longer the total life time. Most of surface micro-cracks initiate at grain boundaries before the specimen reaches 20% of its total life time, a few of them lead to fracture by coalescence with the main crack.

  • The welding implementation used widely in the industrial field is gradually increasing due to weight reduction. unlimited material thickness. simplified structure design. and 1 manufacturing time and cost reduction. The most significant factor that influences the fatigue crack growth rate is the residual stress generated during the welding process. Many researchers have studied the effect of the residual stress on crack growth behavior. Through a fatigue test in a various-thickness welded specimen. redistributed residual stress is measured as the crack is developed. Then. by superposing the measured residual stress on the K value obtained by the finite element method.

  • In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of fatigue fracture on TB(Tailored Blank) weldment by comparing the fatigue crack propagation characteristics of base metal with those of TB welded sheet used for vehicle body panels. We also investigated the influence of center crack on the fatigue characteristic of laser weld sheet of same thickness. We conducted an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on the base metal specimen of 1.2mm thickness of cold-rolled metal sheet(SPCSD) and 2.0mm thickness of hot-rolled metal sheet(SAPH440) and 1.2+2.0mm TB specimen. We also made an experiment on fatigue crack propagation on 2.0+2.0mm and 1.2+1.2mm thickness TB specimen which had center crack. The characteristics of fatigue crack growth on the base metal were different from those on 1.2+2.0mm thickness TB specimen. The fatigue crack growth rate of the TB welded specimens is slower in low stress intensity factor range $({\Delta}K)$ region and faster in high${\Delta}K$ region than that of the base metal specimens. The slant crack angle slightly influenced the crack propagation of the TB specimen of 2.0+2.0mm thinkness.

  • The initiation and growth of short fatigue cracks in the simulated aircraft structure with a series of rivet holes was detected by acoustic emission (AE). The location and the size of short tracks were determined by AE source location techniques and the measurement with traveling microscope. AE events increased intermittently with the initiation and growth of short cracks to form a stepwise increment curve of cumulative AE events. For the precise determination of AE source locations, a region-of-interest (ROI) was set around the rivet holes based on the plastic zone size in fracture mechanics. Since the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was very low at this early stage of fatigue cracks, the accuracy of source location was also enhanced by the wavelet transform do-noising. In practice, the majority of AE signals detected within the ROI appeared to be noise from various origins. The results showed that the effort of structural geometry and SNR should be closely taken into consideration for the accurate evaluation of fatigue damage in the structure.

  • In this paper, procedures and research results involved in the development of glass reinforced composite bridge deck of hollow section were presented. Laminate design for the 3 cell deck section was performed. Structural characteristics such as serviceability, strength, failure and stability for DB24 load were analytically studied through the finite element analysis for the composite deck plate girder bridge. Composite deck tube was fabricated with pultrusion and extensive tests such as flexural test, girder-connection test, barrier-connection test, compression fatigue test and flexural fatigue test were carried out to evaluate structural behavior experimentally. Also, field load test was conducted for the demonstration plate girder bridge with composite deck and requirements for the strength and serviceability were reviewed.
