  • It is experimented under rotary bending stress that the spacing of two micro hole flaws is adjacent and that it is distant. In order to observe the behavior of fatigue crack propagation, two kinds of specimens are tested under constant stress and periodic overstressing. Although the crack occurs faster when two micro-hole flaws are adjacent than when they are distant, but there is no difference of the number of fracture cycles between two. The crack propagates slower under low-high block stress than under high-constant stress, and it propagates faster under high-low block stress than under low-constant stress. The influence of two-step block stress is serious right after the stress varies.

  • SB41 material is welded automatically and is investigated some effects of the welding residual stress in the growth and propagation of fatigue crack, so as to study the fatigue behaviour in the welding residual stress field. The summarized results are as follows; 1) In case of the load amplitude is constant, as the stress ratio is changing to 0.1, 0.33 and 0.5 the propagation life is constant but the growth life decreases. And than, when maximum load or minimum load is constant as the stress ratio increases the growth life and propagation life. 2) It was shown that fatigue crack propagation ratio da/dN was almost constant regardless of the stress ratio change at constant load amplitude and that the larger stress ratio, the slower was the fatigue crack propagation ratio. 3) The opening ratio U is influenced by $K_max$ but it isn't only the function of $K_max$ because data range is very large. 4) The fatigue life of the specimens on tensile compressive residual stress field was decreased and increased respectably more than that of the base metal.

  • The lightness of components required in automobile and machinery industry is requiring high strength of components. In particular, manufacturing process and new materials development for solving the fatigue fracture problem attendant upon high strength of suspension of automobile are actively advanced. In this paper, the effect of compressive residual stress of spring steel(JISG SUP-9) by shot-peening on fatigue crack growth characteristics in high temperatures($100^{\circ}C,\;150^{\circ}C,\;180^{\circ}C$) was investigated with considering fracture mechanics. So, we can obtain followings. (1) Compressive residual stress is decreased in high temperature, that is, with increasing temperature. (2) The effect of compressive residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior in high temperature is increased below ${\Delta}K=17{\sim}19MPa\sqrt{m}$. The fatigue crack growth rate is increased with increasing temperature. The fatigue life is decreased with increasing temperature. (3) The dependence of temperature and compressive residual stress on the parameters C and m in Paris' law formed the formulas such as equations (3),(4),(5),(6),(7),(8),(9),(10). (4) It was investigated by SEM that the constraint of compress residual stress for plastic zone of fatigue crack tip was decreased in high temperature as compared with room temperature.

  • In this paper, the effect of the compressive residual stresses which were obtained under the various shot velocities of shot balls on the fatigue behaviors of a spring steel, were investigated. The examination of CT specimen test were executed with the materials(JISG SUP9) which are being commonly used for the springs of automotive vehicles. As a result, the optimal shot velocity of shot balls were acquired considering the peak values of the compressive residual stresses on the surface of specimen and effect on the speed of the fatigue crack propagation da/dN in stage II and the threshold stress intensity factor range Δ$K_{th}$ in stage I. Also the material constant C and the crack propagation index m in the formula of paris law da/dN= C $({\Delta}K^m)$ were suggested in this work to estimate the dependency on the shot velocity.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from AST SA516 Gr. 70 which was used for pressure vessel plates for room and low temperature service. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room and low temperature at 25$^{\circ}C $, -60$^{\circ}C $, -80$^{\circ}C $ and -100$^{\circ}C $ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.05, 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. At the constant stress ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor range ${\delta} K_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and stress intensity factor range $\delta $K in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) were increased in proportion to descending temperature. It was assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region. The straight line slope relation of logarithm da/dN -$\delta $K in Region II, that is, the fatigue crack growth exponent m increased with descending temperature at the constant stress ratio. It was assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate da/dN is rapid in proportion to descending temperature in Region II and the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.

  • Experimental research has been carried out to investigate the characteristics of the fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior of Tailor Welded Blank(TB) sheet used for vehicle body. We used three types of specimens which were machined of the same base metal: one is 1.4mm thick, another is 1.6mm thick, and the third(TB specimen) is laser-welded of two specimens(1.4mm and 1.6mm thick ones). The results of tensile and hardness test indicate that the yield strength of the TB specimen is the highest, and the hardness around welding bead is higher than that of base metal. Fatigue strength and fatigue limit of the TB specimen are much superior to those of the base metal up to $10^6$ cycles. The fatigue crack propagation of the heat-affected zone of the TB specimen is slower than that of the base metal. Welding bead has the fastest crack Propagation in the low stress intensity factor range$(\DeltaK)$ region, but the slowest in the high $\DeltaK$ region. The fatigue propagation characteristic of the TB specimen is relatively stable in comparison with that of the base metal in the high ${\Delta}K$ region around over $28MPa\sqrt{m}$.

  • We measured the mechanical and thermal properties of four types of cast irons used for manufacturing the brake discs of railway vehicles. It was found that these properties could be controlled by varying the composition of Ni, Cr, and Mo. Thermal fatigue tests were carried out by using a thermal fatigue tester in which thermal cycles could be controlled. Thermal crack initiation and propagation were measured on cylindrical specimens. Finally, we simulated the thermal fatigue test procedure by finite element analysis and calculated the thermal fatigue lifetimes by Manson-Coffin's equation and the maximum principal strain. The estimated thermal fatigue lifetimes corresponded to the measured lifetimes when the total crack length was $40{\mu}m{\sim}1mm$.

  • In this study rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out with the deep non-through radial holed notch specimens of low carbon steels(SM 22C). It is investigated that the behaviors of surface and interior fatigue crack propagation and the variations of the shape of the cracked surface on the magnitude of bending stresses. The Obtained results are summarized as follows. (1) The relations between [Crack length] and [Cycle ratio] are expressed by following eq. in the 0.1~0.6 range of N/ $N_{f}$ long[ crack length] = A + B [N/ $N_{f}$ ] In case of surface crack length, values of A and B are uniformed independent upon the magnitude of bending stress, but those are variable according to the magnitude of bending stress for interior crack length. (2) The following eq. is derived on the surface crack propagation rate, bending stress and surface crack length. (dl/dN)=(3.94*10$^{-12}$ ).sigma.$^{4.54}$l (3) Under small stress, interior crack propagation rate increase with the interior crack growth but it decrease for large stress. (4) The shape of cracked surface depends upon the magnitude of bending stress. Under small stress fatigue crack propagates as an semi-ellipse with semi-major axis of surface crack length with semi-major axis of interior crack length for large stress.s.

  • In this study, the effects of gas ratio($N_2:H_2$) and treatment time on the fatigue fracture behavior, fatigue crack growth behavior and corrosion fatigue fracture behavior for the ion-nitrided SM45C steel were investigated. The results show that the fatigue limit and corrosion fatigue strength increased in porportion to $N_2$ gas and treatment time for all kinds of specimen, used in the experiment. Compare to the non-nitrided specimen, the fatigue limit and the corrosion fatigue strength increased about $24{\sim}29%$ at $10^7$ cycles in air and $32{\sim}48%$ at $10^6$ cycles in 3% NaCl aqueous solution, respectively. Similar results were derived with SM45C steel under Compression-Tension $24{\sim}29%$ at $10^6$ cycles in air and $32{\sim}48%$ either in 3% NaCl aqueous solution or in tap water, respectively. Ion-nitrided SM45C steel showed a slow fatigue crack growth rate at relatively low range of ${\Delta}K$ compared to the non-nitrided specimen. To the contrary, its rate increase at higher range of ${\Delta}K$.
