Plastics are comparatively new polymeric materials that are manufactured by chemical synthesis, making them different from natural materials such as wood, paper, stone, metal, and glass. Due to a wide range of properties, including processing capabilities and duration, plastics have become rapidly ubiquitous, being used in all industries, and have improved our quality of life. However, it is true that plastics cause environmental contamination problems that have become important social issues, such as environmental hormone leakage due to incineration or reclamation, difficulty in securing reclamation sites, and deadly poisonous dioxin generated by the incomplete incineration of waste plastic materials. To solve these problems, it is urgent to develop and commercialize degradable plastics that can be stably and conveniently used just as general plastics, and that are easily decomposed by sunlight, soil microbes, and heat generated from reclaimed land after use. This review presents recent worldwide trends in the development and marketing of environmentally degradable plastics.

As environmental issues are emerging, bio-plastic suppliers in leading countries have been foreseeing the strong needs for environment-friendly materials such as eco-packing materials due to increased attention and regulation on recycle. To catch up with the demand, various types of bio-plastics based on natural feedstocks were developed and released on a market. These bio-plastic products drew the great attention even in domestic industries. At present, international oil price fluctuation and heavy charge on waste raise the unit cost of production and disposal expense of conventional plastic materials. These conditions make bio-plastic an alternative, because it is not restrained by oil prices and problem in the disposal. It is also expected that bio-plastic will be applied to various types of products including containers, industrial supplies, disposables, and medical supplies. However, the bio-plastic is still in its infancy, thus more research and understanding should be followed to put it to application. Bio-plastic is considered as environment-friendly material with high potential which has the advantages of production and disposal.

This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of resource recovery for municipal solid waste(MSW) that sorted by a MBT system. First, physical property of MSW was similar to wastes carried into Sudokown landfill site. However, moisture of MSW was little higher than that. As a result of BMP test using organic fraction of MSW(OFMSWs), approximately 60 ~ 80 mL $CH_4/g$-VS of methane was occurred. Compared to the other studies, the value of methane is lower. It seems to be caused that high ratio of vinyl/plastic in OFMSWs. The other BMP test using sample of MBT system located in Sudokwon landfill was conducted each physical properties. According to the result of experiment, food waste makes 193 mL $CH_4/g$-VS, and paper is 102 mL $CH_4/g$-VS. However, there was not methane production in vinyl and rubber. Additionally, others that can't sort no more show 30 m $CH_4L/g$-VS of methane production. From the result of experimental data OFMSWs has high fraction of vinyl, rubber and other substance that difficult for biodegradation. Therefore it is need to sort of them.
A standard plastic garbage bag which was discarded from Incheon Metropolitan City was composed of 4.5% recyclable resources (aluminum cans 0.2%, steel cans 2.5%, glass 1.8%), 92.5% resources with recoverable energy (papers 23.0%, plastics 15.5%, combustible etc. 54.0%) and 3.0% non-combustible etc. Recycling is more effective than landfilling for aluminum cans, steel cans, and glass. The energy recovery process using solid refuse fuel (SRF) is more effective than incineration for papers and plastics. Incineration is more effective than recycling for combustible etc. 2,068,948 Million Btu of total energy savings and 21,008 $MTCO_2E$ of total GHG reductions were obtained by the application of the proposed scheme. The total energy savings were equivalent to an economic benefit of 422 billion won per year. The total GHG reductions were equivalent to a GHG benefit of 4,119 passenger cars not running per year. The lower calorific value of the combustible materials was obtained to be 1,936 kcal/kg of papers, 5,079 kcal/kg of plastics and 2,462 kcal/kg of combustible other resources, respectively. If papers and plastics are properly mixed, the mixture can be used as SRF. The lower calorific value of combustible other resources does not meet the quality criteria for refuse derived fuel, therefore its components are inappropriate to used as solid refuse fuel.

As a waste management tool, the prohibition of landfilling of food waste has enforced since 2005. the composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) has changed dramatically. In this study, MSW generated from a small city collected once a year in 2004, 2005 and 2007, to qualify the characteristics of MSW before and after implementation of the tool. The prohibition of landfilling of food waste dramatically reduces food waste in MSW to 5.5 weight %, and on the other hand results to increase papers to 50.6 % and plastics to 22.6 %, The bulk density lowers to 50 %, which newly propose the necessity of volume reduction and incineration of MSW to ensure efficient transport and disposal. As water content of MSW reduces to 15.9 %, lower heat value of MSW after prohibition of landfilling of food waste increase to 3565.6 kcal/kg. Mitigation of bad smell and waste leachate with lower contaminants are recommendable as a kind of positive effects benefited by the tool.
Recycling of red mud from the aluminium manufacturing process was investigated to be utilized as plastic fillers. High density polyethylene(HDPE), low density polyethylene(LDPE) and polypropylene(PP) were found to be the suitable plastic material for which red mud can be used as fillers. With the addition of red mud the plastic showed red brown color. As the ratio of amount of red mud to plastic increased, the tensile strength increased while the Izod impact strength decreased. About five percent of ethylene vinyl alcohol(EVA) was needed as an additive to prevent the lowering of impact strength. Maleic anhydride modified polypropylene was effective for reduction of impact strength lowering of PP. Mixed waste plastics containing LDPE, HDPE, PP, polystyrene and ABS could also accommodate red mud as fillers. In this case, significant loss in mechanical properties were observed due to immiscibility between the components. Ethylene propylene rubber(EPR) and styrene butadiene styrene block copolymer (SBS) could be used to improve the impact properties of the commingled waste plastics.
Advances in food packaging play an important role in keeping food manufacturing and food supply safe. Food packaging facilitates the storage, handling, transportation and preservation of food, and also contributes to the minimization of food waste. On the other hand, food packaging materials have high production volumes, short usage times, and accelerate the occurrence of environmental problems related to waste. The circular economy has already been introduced to pursue sustainability through resource conservation and recycling, and to reduce waste and carbon emissions. By activating an eco-friendly economic system that minimizes resource depletion and environmental pollution, reducing, reusing, recycling and redesigning the goals of the circular economy will reduce the impact of food packaging on the environment. This review focused on the safety aspects of recycled food packaging as recycling is currently considered an important means of packaging waste management. Assessing the safety of recycled packaging is very important because recycling can increase the levels of potentially hazardous chemicals in packaging and in the food after they are migrated. Various food packaging materials such as plastic, paper and cardboard, aluminum, steel, and multi-material multi-layers packaging are commonly used, but only the recycling safety of plastic food packaging materials, which is the most used and has a significant increase in post-use problem, is discussed in this review.

Remote detecting system for a radiation contamination using a plastic scintillator and an optical fiber was developed. Using a commercially available silica optical fiber and a plastic scintillator, we tested then for a real possibility as a remote monitoring detector. Also, a plastic scintillator was developed by itself, and evaluated as a radiation sensor. The plastic scintillator was made of epoxy resin, a hardener and an organic scintillation material. The mixture rate of the epoxy resin, hardener and organic scintillator was fixed by using their emission spectrum, transmittance, intensity etc. In this study, in order to decrease the light loss of an incomplete connection between an optical fiber and a scintillator, the optical fiber was inserted into the scintillator during the fabrication process. The senor used a plastic optical fiber and was estimated for its detection efficiency by an optic fiber's geometric factor.
