This study numerically carried out the propeller open water test(POW) by solving Navier-Stokes equations governing the three-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow with the turbulence closure model of the ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model. Numerical simulations are performed at various range of advance ratios. Corresponding to Reynolds numbers of $5.89{\times}105{\sim}6.47{\times}105$ based on free stream velocity and the chord length at 0.7 propeller radius. The present results give a good agreement with those of the experiment. The propeller induced vortical structures have been analyzed by visualizing the resultant vorticity. As the advance ratio increases, the magnitude and length of the resultant vorticity decrease significantly. As the main focus of present study, the numerical model to present the ($r-{\theta}$) plane-averaged resultant vorticity along the streamwise direction for various advance ratios has been suggested.

The characteristics of complicated propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated by using a two-frame PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. As the propeller is significantly affected by the hull wake in a real marine vessel, the measurements of propeller wake under the hull wake would be certainly necessary for more reliable validation and the prediction of numerical simulation with wake modeling. Velocity field measurements have been conducted in a medium-size cavitation tunnel with a hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the boundary layer of ship's hull produces the different loading distribution on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The difference of the propeller wake behaviors caused by the hull wake is discussed in terms of axial velocity, vorticity and turbulence kinetic energy distribution in the present study.

In this paper, three-dimensional unsteady computational fluid dynamic(CFD) analyses based on overset grid technique have been performed for a hand-launched unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) considering the wake effect generated by a rotating propeller. In addition, the defection of rudder is considered in order to consider to predict the equilibrium condition of yawing moment during cruise flight conditions. It is importantly shown in this paper that the wake interference effect of the propeller is significant to accurately predict the yawing moment of the UAV and the yawing moment coefficient corresponding to a flight speed can be different because of its different amount of wake effect due to the different rotating speed of the propeller.

Procedures for the development of a preswirl stator-propulsion system for a VLCC 300K are described in this paper. The preswirl stator-propulsion system is one of the compound propulsor systems, which is used for the purpose of recovering propeller slipstream rotational energy by locating a stator in front of the propeller. The preswirl stator-propulsion system can be considered as a most reliable energy saving device because of its simple mechanism. Five stators are designed for the existing hull form and propeller, and their effects are verified by model tests. Open-water test result of the preswirl stator-propulsion system at the cavitation tunnel show $4{\sim}6%$ increase of open-water efficiency compared to that of a propeller without stators. Maximum 6.5% decrease of delivered power at the design speed(15.5knots) is expected with the designed stator based on the analysis results of resistance and self-propulsion test at the towing tank.

Hull-propeller-rudder interactions are studied by the iterative computational procedures. Hull effects on the propeller are reflected through the effective velocities computed by the vortex ring method which used the measured nominal wake as input data. A potential based panel method has been developed to solve the propeller-rudder interactions using the obtained effective velocities. Steady flow characteristics around the rudder surface can be obtained by computing the induced velocities on the rudder by the propeller and vice versa are computed by the iterative manner until the converged solutions are obtained. Flow characteristics around the propeller and the rudder are measured by Laser Doppler Velocimetry(L.D.V.) in large cavitation tunnel at Samsung Heavy industries. The gap flow model is adopted to solve the characteristics of the horn rudder. Numerical results are compared with the experimental values and the computed velocity fields and pressure distributions with rudder angle on the horn rudder surface show good agreement with measured ones in large cavitation tunnel.

A new blade section of propeller is developed to obtain higher propeller efficiency and better cavitation performance. Eleven foil sections are carefully designed and manufactured to compare the lift-drag characteristics and cavitation performances. It is expected that the developed section behaves better in the vicinity of the ship's wake, where the angle of attack variation is large, because of its wider width in lift-drag and cavitation-free bucket diagrams. A propeller design method using the selected foil section is presented. Three chordwise loading shapes are selected to investigate the influence of the lift-drag ratios on the propeller efficiencies and cavitation performances. Three propellers are designed, which correspond to the selected chordwise loading shapes. Two more propellers which use existing foil sections are designed to compare the section performance.

In this study, wind tunnel test on Quad-Tilt Propeller which has tandem wings is carried out to analyze the aerodynamic interference effect of front wing and propeller on rear wing during forward flight. Using 6-axis balance system, forces and moments of whole aircraft were measured and using strain gauge at wing root, bending moments were measured to observe change of aerodynamic force of each wings. A 12-hole probe was used to measure the flow field in the wing and propeller wake. Flow characteristics were observed qualitatively through flow visualization experiment using tuft and smoke. To measure the aerodynamic interference by elements, the influence of front wing and propeller on rear wing was analyzed by changing the wings and propellers mount combination.

A Propeller design method using the newly developed blade section(KH18), which behaves better cavitation characteristics, is presented. Experimental results for two-dimensional foil sections show that the lift-drag curve and the cavitation-free bucket diagram of the new blade section are wider comparing to those of the existion NACA sections. This characteristic of the new section is particularly important for marine propeller applications since angle of attack variation of the propeller blade operating behind a non-uniform ship's wake is relatively large. A lifting surface theory is used for the design of a propeller with the developed section for a 2700 TEU container ship. Since the most suitable chordwise loading shape is not known a priori, chordwise loading shape is chosen as a design parameter. Five propellers with different chordwise loading shapes and different foil sections are designed and tested in the towing tank and cavitation tunnel at KRISO. It is observed by a series of extensive model tsets that the propeller(KP197) having the chordwise loading shape, which has less leading edge loading at the inner radii and more leading edge loading at the outer radii of 0.7 radius, has higher propulsive efficiency and better cavitation characteristics. The KP197 propeller shows 1% higher efficiency, 30% cavitation volume reduction and 9% reduction of fluctuating pressure level comparing to the propeller with an NACA section. More appreciable efficiency gain for the new blade section propeller would be expected by reduction of expanded blade area considering the better cavitation characteristics of the new blade section.

The Power Augmented Ram(PAR) effect, which blows the down stream of the propellers into the underside of the wings and hence increases the pressure between the lower surface of the wings and the sea surface, is known significantly to enhance the performance of the WIG concept by reducing the take-off and landing speeds. The aerodynamic characteristics of a 20 passenger PARWIG are investigated by wind tunnel tests with the 1/20 scale model. The efflux of the forward mounted propellers are simulated by jet flows with a blower and duct system. The lift, drag, and pitch moment of the model with various ground clearances, angles of attack and flap angles are measured for the various jet velocities, jet nozzle angles, horizontal and vertical positions of the nozzle, and the nozzle diameters. The aerodynamic characteristics of the PARWIG due to these parametric changes are compared and pertinent discussions are included. It is shown that the proper use of the PAR can increase the lift coefficient of as much as up to 4.

The complicated flow characteristics of upper propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated in detail in the present study. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was employed to visualize the upper propeller wake region. As the upper hull wake affects strongly propeller inflow, upper propeller wake shows much unstable vortical behavior, especially in the tip vortices. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The unstable upper propeller wake caused by the ship's hull is expressed in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and is identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure in it. Instabilities appeared in the eigen functions higher than the second one, giving unsteadiness to the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigen mode would be useful to find out the tip vortex positions immersed in the unstable downstream region.
