  • This study aims to suggest lesson plans and evaluation methods for primary pre-service teachers by reviewing the concept of computational thinking(CT) skills and its sub components. To pursue this goal, a literature review has been conducted in regards to CT and the effectiveness of programming courses. In addition, the Scratch educational programming functions were analyzed yielding six CT elements(data representation, problem decomposition, abstraction, algorithm & procedures, parallelization, simulation). With these six elements, one semester lesson plans for 15 weeks that represent the connections with six CT elements were designed. Based on the PECT(Progression of Early Computational Thinking) model and the CT framework a rubric to evaluate learners' proficiency levels(basic, developing, proficient) revealed in their final projects was developed as well. Upon a follow-up empirical study, the lesson plans and the rubric suggested in the current study are expected to be utilized in teachers' colleges.

  • As the importance of software to society has grown, more and more schools worldwide teach coding basics in the classroom. Despite the rapid spread of coding instruction in grade schools, experience in the classroom is certainly limited because there is a gap between the curriculum and the existing computing environment such as the mobile and cloud computing. We propose an approach to fill this gap by using a mobile environment and the robot on the cloud-based platform for effective teaching. In this paper, we propose an architecture called Cloudboard that enables knowledge sharing and collaboration among knowledge providers in the cloud-based robot platforms. We also describe five representative architectural patterns that are referenced and analyzed to design the Cloudboard architecture. Our early experimental results show that the Cloudboard can be effective in the development of collective robotic systems.

  • Given the background of so-called 'the 4th industrial revolution', universities practice computing education for non-majors to equip them with computational thinking(CT). Universities apply different courses but researches analyzing effectiveness of the courses based on CT are limited. This research is conducted to understand a computing course for non-majors is effective in terms of CT. A CT based evaluation framework is designed referring to AP Computer Science Principles. Questionnaires are developed based on the framework and applied to the course participants. As results, students' post scores are significantly higher than pre scores. In addition, there are significant differences in pre-test scores by major category while there is no difference in post-test. Humanity & social science group showed the largest difference between pre and post results with science & engineering and computer in order. In sum, it is found that this course is effective to facilitate students abilities in terms of CT, particularly for the non-computer majors.

  • As the knowledge and information society has emerged, paradigm of school education has moved to improvement of creativity and problem-solving skills of a learner. However, up to the present, ICT education in schools has shown distorted features, which are focusing on the use of application programs, out of its original purpose. This study also allows digital technology to be displayed in analog ways by applying the paper prototyping technique, which can be substituted for the programming phase that elementary school students feel difficulty to handle with. In addition, It enables practical and useful ideas to be designed, constructed and evaluated as a system, based on User Centered Design (UCD), which encourages users actively to participate in the development, rather than focus on developer. To verify the effects of education, we evaluated and analyzed concept models of a learner before and after the application development activity by applying the mental model theory. The framework suggested in this study can be applied to courseware of programming in elementary schools.

  • Robots have been recognized as effective tools to promote high level thinking such as creativeness and problem solving that are crucial in Intelligence & Information era. However, robot education in Korea is more concerned with assembling, traveling and programing, while robot education in foreign countries are incorporated with educational courses, being utilized in various ways. Essentially, robot is a multifunctioning device of planning, assembling, operation and problem solving. As it is able to provide practical educational experience, it will positively influence in motivation and accomplishment if being incorporated with educational courses. Therefore, this study compared domestic and foreign robot education cases, while establishing the framework of course incorporated robot education based on analysis of robot mechanism, the 7th curriculum and its activities. We developed robot utilizing educational program by each grade and subject. In addition, this program is reviewed by experts to verify its adequateness, reality and usefulness based on which it was revised and supplemented.
