This paper investigates fretting wear damage in aerospace, biomedical, and nuclear components. Experimental parameters are identified that affect fretting wear damage. The parameters observed in industries are directly compared. The magnitudes of frequency, relative displacement, and normal force are found to differ depending on the contacting components where fretting wear occurs. In addition, recent solutions to minimize fretting wear damage are reviewed. The solutions include depositing of a low-friction coating, surface treatment, selection of substrate material, and optimal design of contact geometries. This comparative study suggests useful methods and solutions for analyzing fretting wear damage and for designing tribo-components.
The prediction of fretting wear is a significant issue for the design of contacting mechanical components such as flexible couplings and splines, jointed structures and so on. In our earlier study, we developed a numerical model to predict the fretting wear using boundary element method. The developed algorithm needs experimental fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients between two moving materials to get more reliable results. In this study, therefore, we demonstrated the measurement method of the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients using disk on plate tribometer with piazo actuator and gap sensor. For four different material combinations, the fretting wear coefficients and friction coefficients are acquired through the fretting wear experiment and the analysis of the measured values. Thess results are useful to predict the quantative fretting wear rate in the developed algorithm.

Inconel alloys are generally used as steam generator tubes in nuclear power plants. These alloys are highnickel chromium alloys that exhibit excellent resistance to aqueous corrosion. In this paper, the effects of elevated temperatures such as an operating temperature of $320^{\circ}C$ on the fretting fatigue behavior of inconel 600 and 690. We observed that the plain and fretting fatigue limits at $320^{\circ}C$ were slightly lower than those at room temperature. The frictional forces varied depending on the number of load cycles. After each test, we studied the fretting fatigue mechanisms via SEM observations. These results can be used for structural integrity evaluations at elevated temperatures and for studying fretting damage in steam generator systems.

Nuclear fuels are always exposed to hot temperature and high speed coolant flow during the reactor operation. Thus the fuel rod accompanies small amplitude vibration due to the turbulent flow. The random vibration causes friction between the fuel rod and the grid structure which provides the lateral supports. The friction is critical to the fuel rod fretting wear, and it degrades fuel performance when a severe wear is developed. LuGre friction model is introduced in the paper, and the performance was evaluated comparing to the classical Coulomb model. It is shown that the developed friction force considering the Coulomb friction is not enough to stop or delay the motion while the stick-slip can be simulated using LuGre friction model. Numerical solutions of the two dimensional spacer grid cell model with the modern friction are also reviewed, and it is discussed that the new friction model simulates well the nonlinear mechanism.

Inconel 690 for nuclear steam generator tube has more Chromium than the conventionally used Inconel 600 in order to increase the corrosion resistance. To evaluate the tribological characteristics of Inconel 690 under fretting condition the fretting tests were carried out in air and elevated temperature water. Fretting tests of the cross-cylinder type were done under various vibrating amplitudes and applied normal loads in order to measure the friction forces and wear volumes. From the results of fretting wear tests. the wear of Inconel 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. The amounts of friction forces were proportional to relative movement between two fretting surfaces. The friction coefficients were decreased as increasing the normal loads and deceasing the vibrating amplitudes. Depending on fretting environment, distinctively different wear mechanisms and often drastically different wear rates can occur It was found that the fretting wearfactors in air and water at 2$0^{\circ}C$, 5$0^{\circ}C$, and 8$0^{\circ}C$ were 7.38 $\times$$10^{-13}$$Pa^{-1}$, 2.12 $\times$$10^{-13}$$Pa^{-1}$, 3.34$\times$$10^{-13}$$Pa^{-1}$and 5.21$\times$$10^{-13}$$Pa^{-1}$, respectively flexibility to model response data with multiple local extreme. In this study, metamodeling techniques are adopted to carry out the shape optimization of a funnel of Cathode Ray Tube, which finds the shape minimizing the local maximum principal stress. Optimum designs using two metamodels are compared and proper metamodel is recommended based on this research.

In this paper, a fretting testing machine is developed using ball-on-flat test apparatus. Precise micro-slip motion is produced by a linear stage. A relative displacement between a ball and a flat specimen is measured with a laser displacement sensor. Dry friction tests are conducted with AISI 52100 steel balls and cold-rolled high strength steel plates at room temperature and ambient humidity. The evolution of the kinetic friction coefficient is determined. Comparison between measured friction coefficients and those found in the literature is then carried out. Fretting tests with an electro-deposited coating are employed at an amplitude of 0.05 mm. Slip regime is identified with slip ratio. It is demonstrated that a developed testing machine allows determining the friction coefficient under fretting condition.

Fretting is a kind of surface damage mechanism observed in mechanically jointed components and structures. The initial crack under fretting damage occurs at lower stress amplitude and lower cycles of cyclic loading than that under plain fatigue condition. This can be observed in automobile and railway vehicle, fossil and nuclear power plant, aircraft etc. In the present study, railway axle material RSA1 used for evaluation of fretting fatigue life. Plain and fretting fatigue tests were carried out using rotary bending fatigue tester with proving ring and bridge type contact pad. Through these experiments, it is found that the fretting fatigue limit decreased about 37% compared to the plain fatigue limit. In fretting fatigue, the wear debris is observed on the contact surface, and oblique cracks at an earlier stage are initiated in contact area. These results can be used as useful data in a structural integrity evaluation of railway axle.
Fretting is a potential degradation mechanism of structural components and equipments exposed to various environments and loading conditions. The fretting degradation, for example, can be observed in equipments of nuclear, fossil as well as petroleum chemical plants exposed to special environments and loading conditions. It is well known that a cast stainless steel(CF8M) used in a primary reactor coolant(RCS) degrades seriously when that material is exposed to temperature range ken $290^{\circ}C{\sim}390^{\circ}C$ for long period. This degradation can be resulted into a catastrophical failure of components. In the present paper, the characteristics of the fretting fatigue are investigated using the artificially aged CF8M specimen. The specimen of CF8M are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique holding 1800hr at $430^{\circ}C$ respectively. Through the investigations, the simple fatigue endurance limit of the virgin specimen is not altered from that obtained from the fatigue tests imposed the fretting fatigue. The similar tests are performed using the degraded specimen. The results are not changed from those of the virgin specimen. The significant effects of fretting fatigue imposed on both virgin and degraded specimen on the fatigue strength are not found.

Plain and fretting fatigue tests were carried out using rotary bending fatigue tester with proving ring and bridge type contact pad. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) it is found that the fretting fatigue limit of standard specimen decreased about 37% compared to the plain fatigue limit. 2) The early crack of Shinkansen type specimens initiated in contact area and final fractured below samp=214 MPa. 3) The early crack of all TGV type specimens initiated in rounded area and fractured. 4) Tire tracks and rubbed scars were observed in the oblique crack region and fatigue crack growth region of fracture surface. 5) The wear debris is observed on the contact surface, and oblique cracks at an earlier stage are initiated in contact area. These results can be used as useful data in a structural integrity evaluation of railway axle.
