The technique of fretting fatigue test was developed and fretting fatigue tests of A12024-T4 were conducted under several conditions. The newly developed calibration methods for measuring surface contact tractions showed good linearity and repeatability. The plate type specimen to which tow bridge type pads were attached and vision system was used to observe the crack behaviour. The oblieque cracks appeared in the early stage of crack growth and they became mode I cracks as they grow about 1 mm. The mode I transition points were found to be longer when surface tractions are higher or bulk stress is lower. Before the crack becomes mode I crack, 'well point' where crack grow about rate is minimum, was detected under every experimental condition. The crack behaviour was found to be affected by surface tractions, contact area, bulk stress. It was also found that partial slip and stick condition is most detrimental and the crack starts from the boundary of stick and slip. For gross slip crack started at the outside edge of pad. After crack mode transition, fretting fatigue cracks showed almost same behaviour of plain mode I fatigue cracks. Equivalent stress intensity factor was used to analyze the behaviour of fretting fatigue cracks and it was found that stress intensity factors can be applied to fretting fatigue cracks.

An experiment was carried out to figure out the turbulence flow characteristics in the wake of the transom stern's 2-dimensional section by 2-frame grey level cross correlation PIV method at Re= $3.5{\times}10^3$, Re= $7.0{\times}10^3$. The angles of transom stern are $45^{\circ}$(Model "A"), $90^{\circ}$(Model "B") and $135^{\circ}$(Model "C") respectively. The depth of wetted surface is 40mm from free surface. Strong turbulence intensity appears at the interaction between the flow separation of the bottom of a model and the free surface. This study provides statistic flow information such as turbulence intensity, Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy. Model C type (Raked transom) has low Reynolds stress and turbulence kinetic energy.

Single-layer latticed domes with rigid-joint have an advantage in the construction cost and the aesthetic. But, in single-layer latticed domes, the joints are hard to discriminate between pin-joint and rigid-joint, and consisted of semi-rigid joint in practical. And the erection of large roof structures requires special techniques. As one of these special techniques is the Step-Up erection method. This paper verified buckling characteristics of single-Layer lamella domes according to the Joint flexibility under construction by Step-up method. The results are follows: As erection steps increase, the buckling strength decreases. It is occurred the joint buckling by snap through on the top of dome when the joint flexibility close the rigid. And large tensile stress distribution appeared in circumferential member of bottom boundary when the step of construction is low. As the step of construction increase, large compressive stress distribution showed in the top of dome.

Korea was recognized as a relatively safe area for earthquake. However, due to considerable damage to facilities caused by the earthquake in Gyeongju and Pohang, interest in the maintenance and repair of structures is increasing. So interest in vibration damping technology applicable to existing structures is also increasing. However, vibration damping technology has a problem in that its usability is reduced due to damage of the damping device when a strong earthquake occurs. Recently, in order to solve such a problem, study is being conducted to apply a superelastic shape memory alloys (SSMA) capable of recentering bracing. Therefore, in this study, nonlinear dynamic analysis is performed to evaluate the seismic performance of the buckling-restrained braced frame (BRBF) applied SSMA to bracing.
This paper presents the optimum design methodology for composite wing structure which automatically calculates the safety margin using optimization framework integrating failure modes. Particularly, its framework is possible to optimize sizing procedure to prevent failure mode which has the greatest effect on reducing the sizing time of composite structure. The main failure mode was set as the first ply failure, buckling failure mode, and bolted joint stress field, and the margin was calculated to minimize the weight. The design variable is a laminate sequence database and the responses are strain, buckling, bolted joint stress field. The objective function is the mass of the wing structure. The results of buckling analysis were compared using the finite element model to verify the robustness and reliability of Composite Optimizer.

For achieving economical fuel consumption, an increase in the load bearing capacity, and for environmental conservation, there is a constant demand for lightweight frames of commercial vehicles used in the transportation industry. In this study, a structural analysis of the frame of a heavy flat-bed trailer was performed to determine the optimal design of a new lightweight frame made of high-strength steel. To identify the key design parameters of the trailer frame, Taguchi's orthogonal array was used in the experiments. Using ANSYS, a commercial FEA program, the frame structure was optimized with respect to stress, deflection, and torsional stiffness by performing stress and vibration analyses. A physical model of the trailer was also built to verify the validity of the numerical analyses. Finally, an on-road fatigue test of the new lightweight frame made of the high-strength steel, ATOS80, was performed to confirm the durability of the new design.

Analysis of nonlinear behavior of prestressed concrete frame structures on PC is a time-consuming computing job if the problem size increase to a certain degree. Cluster system has emerged as one of promising computing environments due to its good extendibility, portability, and cost-effectiveness, comparing it with high-end work-stations or servers. In this paper, a parallel nonlinear analysis procedure of prestressed concrete frame structure is presented using cluster computing. Cluster system is configured with readily available pentium III class PCs under Win98 or Linux and fast ethernet. Parallel computing algorithms on element-wise processing parts including the calculation of stiffness matrix, element stresses and determination of material states, check of material failure and calculation of unbalanced loads are developed using MPL. Validity of the method is discussed through typical numerical examples. For the case of 4 node system, maximum speedup is 3.15 and 3.74 for Win98 and Linux, respectively. Important issues for the efficient use of cluster computing system based un PCs and ethernet are addressed.

Governing parameters for determination of the location of crack initiation and direction of crack initiation were investigated by performing fretting fatigue tests and analysis on Al 2024-T351. Fatigue tests were carried out using biaxial fatigue machine. It was shown that the dominant fatigue crack tended to initiate at the outer edge of one of the four bridge pads, growing at an angle beneath a pad, before turning perpendicular to the orientation of the axial load. Distribution of stresses generated during fretting fatigue loading along the interface was calculated by elastic FE simulation. It can be known that the location of crack initiation can be predicted by using the maximum tangential stress range. Futhermore, the crack initiation direction can also be predicted by a maximum tangential stress range.

A three-dimensional finite element model of a 20-pin plastic dual-in-line package(PDIP) plugged into a PCE has been developed by using the finite element code ANSYS. The model has been used for thermal characterization of the package during its normal operation under natural convection cooling. Temperature distributions in the package and PCB are obtained from numerical analysis and compared with experimentally measured data. Various cases are assumed and analyzed to study the effects of package and PCB materials on thermal characteristics of PDIP with and without aluminum heatspreader. Thermal dissipation capability of PDIP is greatly increased due to copper die pad/lead frame and heatspreader. However, thermally induced stresses in the package and fatigue life of chip are improved for PDIP with Alloy 42 die pad/lead frame and no heatspreader. It is also found that the role of PCB on thermal characteristics of PDIP is very imporatant.

Recently, for the development of vehicle structures and components there is a tendency to increase using numerical simulation methods compared with practical tests for the estimation of the fatigue strength. In this study, an integrated powerful methodology is suggested for fatigue strength evaluation through development of the interface program to integrate dynamic analysis quasi-static stress analysis and fatigue analysis, which were so far used independently. To verify the presented evaluation method, a single and zigzag bump run test, 4-post road load simulation and driving durability test have been performed. The prediction results show a good agreement between analysis and test. This research indicates that the integrated life prediction methodology can be used as a reliable design tool in the pre-prototype and prototype development stage, to reduce the expense and time of design iteration.
