Screenhouse experiments were conducted to find out the varietal difference in ovipositional preference of the striped rice borer moths (Chilo suppressalis W.) on eight varieties of rice and its association with several plant morphological characters. The results indicated the strong preference of the moths for ovipositing on several varieties. The varieties Tongil (Suweon 213-1), Yushin, Jinheung and TKM-6 had comparatively more egg masses and more eggs than the varieties IR-26, IR-747, Rexoro and Juckna. The strong ovipositional preference of moths of Tongil, as compared to the resistant variety TKM-6 and the susceptible variety Rexoro, was. always consistent in this study whenever the number of tillers were uniformed and each two varieties were paired. It could be concluded that the moths definitely preferred Tongil among the test varieties. There was not any significant correlations between the ovipositional preference and the plant characters; such as number of tillers per plant, plant height, external diameter of stem, and size of leaf. The cause of strong perference of the moths for ovipositing on short type varieties Tongil and Yushin were still suspectable.

The objective of the experiment was to determine the sprout emergence and asparagus seedling growth characteristics of six cultivars ('Apollo', 'Atlas', 'Grande', 'Purple Passion', 'UC157', and 'Walker Deluxe') according to growth stage to select suitable cultivar in the Korean climate condition. As a result of examining the growth characteristics of the seedlings of each cultivar during the dormancy, bud break, early fern growth and fern establishment stages, green asparagus cultivar 'UC157' had a higher number of spears, number of roots and buds, root length, and fresh and dry weights of root than the other cultivars. Green asparagus cultivars, 'Atlas' and 'UC157' were released from dormancy considerably earlier than other cultivars. In contrast, a purple asparagus cultivar 'Purple Passion' was showed to lower growth characteristics than those of other cultivars. Proper thermal insulation will be required when the seedling stage of asparagus is damaged by low temperature in winter. These results indicated that the 'UC157' cultivar showed characteristics of good seedlings and bud break compared to other cultivars and is thus expected to have the highest yield among all cultivars tested.
Some biochemical features of varietal variation in seed protein and their implications for soybean breeding for high protein were pursued employing 86 soybean varieties of Korea, Japan, and the U.S.A. origins. Also, studied comparatively was the temporal pattern of protein components accumulation during seed development characteristic to the high protein variety. Seed protein content of the 86 soybean varieties varied 34.4 to 50.6%. Non-existence of variety having high content of both protein and oil, or high protein content with average oil content as well as high negative correlation between the content of protein and oil (r=-0.73$^{**}$) indicate strongly a great difficulty to breed high protein variety while conserving oil content. The total content of essential amino acids varied 32.82 to 36.63% and the total content of sulfur-containing amino acids varied 2.09 to 2.73% as tested for 12 varieties differing protein content from 40.0 to 50.6%. The content of methionine was positively correlated with the content of glutamic acid, which was the major amino acid (18.5%) in seed protein of soybean. In particular, the varieties Bongeui and Saikai #20 had high protein content as well as high content of sulfur-containing amino acids. The content of lysine was negatively correlated with that of isoleucine, but positively correlated with protein content. The content of alanine, valine or leucine was correlated positively with oil content. The seed protein of soybean was built with 12 to 16 components depending on variety as revealed on disc acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The 86 varieties were classified into 11 groups of characteristic electrophoretic pattern. The protein component of Rm=0.14(b) showed the greatest varietal variation among the components in their relative contents, and negative correlation with the content of the other components, while the protein component of Rm=0.06(a) had a significant, positive correlation with protein content. There was sequential phases of rapid decrease, slow increase and stay in the protein content during seed development. Shorter period and lower rate of decrease followed by longer period and higher rate of increase in protein content during seed development was of characteristic to high protein variety together with earlier and continuous development at higher rate of the protein component a. Considering the extremely low methionine content of the protein component a, breeding for high protein content may result in lower quality of soybean protein.n.
The fruit yield and morpholgical characters of F$_{1}$ hybrids between Capscium annuum L. 'California Wonder', four native Japanese cultivars, and three Korean F$_{1}$ cultuvars were evaluated and the results compared with parental cultivars. The F$_{1}$ hybrids obtained by crossing 'California Wonder' and native Japanese cultivars flowered 3 days earlier on average compared to parental cultivars. The yields of F$_{1}$ hydrids were higher than those of the parental cultivars, especially when one of the parents was 'California Wonder'. Also F$_{1}$ hybrid whose one parent was 'California Wonder' and 'Fushimi Amanaga' gave the highest fruit yield. The number of locules and seeds per fruit from of the 'California Wonder' hybrids whose one parent was 'California Wonder' was more than of the native Japanese cultivars. The plant height in F$_{1}$ hybrids obtained by crossing between 'California Wonder' and four native Japanese cultivars tended to be higher than that of the parental cultivars.
The hardwood cutting of Hibiscus syriacus was studied by using 54 different cultivars. In the evaluation of rooting ability and shoot growth, there were much differences between cultivars or groups classified by flower types. The outstanding rooting ability was found in cultivars such as 'Comte de Haimont', 'Hanol-tanshim', 'Hyangdan', 'Nabora', 'Saimdang', whereas 'Ilpyontanshim', 'Lucy', 'Paedal', 'Sohoyang' and other several cultivars showed poor characteristics in their rooting. The longest shoot was observed in 'Hanoltanshim', 'Kreider Blue', 'Nabora', 'New Hamabo', 'Nunbora', while 'Chossarang', 'Lucy', 'Shintaeyang', 'Youngkwang', etc. showed very short shoots. As a result of comparison among three different flower types, semi-doubled flower type showed the most extent of rooting ability and shoot growth.
Quality characteristics, such as moisture content, pH, acidity, sugar content, salinity, flavor, taste, color, and overall acceptance of apple Jangachi prepared with different apple cultivars were investigated after different times in storage. The initial moisture content of apple Jangachi was 14.19-16.94% according to cultivar. After 5 days of storage, the moisture content increased to 23.26-26.91%. The pH was 3.98-4.55 regardless of cultivar. Total acidity decreased at first and then increased slightly after 10 days in the range of 0.8% to 1.3%. The sugar content of apple Jangachi decreased from 60-68% to 27-34% on the 5th day and was maintained at 23-25% after 5 days regardless of apple cultivar. The salinity of apple Jangachi increased from 0.94-1.64% to 3.5-3.8% after 15 day regardless of cultivar. In the sensory evaluation, apple Jangachi prepared with the Gala cultivar was given the best ratings in overall acceptability.
To clarify the varietal differences of resistance to complete flooding, physiological characteristics in relation to flooding resistance in each growth stage of rice plants, the present study was carried out. The rate of survival after flooding at seeding stage of rice plants of the cultivar 'FR 13A' and Ind. X Jap. cultivars were 91.8% and 33.8% to 40%, respectively, while the Japonica varieties were completely dead. The tolerant varieties which has higher rate of survival showed the higher $O_2$ release, the higher catalase activity and lower peroxidase activity according to flooding treatment. Japonica type varieties showed the higher elongation of plant during flooding, lower recovery of flooding damage and the abrupt decrease of yield according to the increase of flooding periods in comparision to Ind. X Jap. crossed varieties when they were flooded at the active tillering stage. When rice plants were flooded at the booting stage, Ind. X Jap. crossed varieties had the higher photosynthesis, respiratory rate, root oxidizing power, ethylene evolution and lower yield reduction in comparision to japonica varieties.varieties.

Six japonica and three Tongil type cultivars that were released in different years and planted to a large area during different periods were grown at the experimental farm of Seoul National University in 2001 and compared for traits related to dry matter production and grain yield. The varieties chosen were Jodongji released in 1896, Paldal in 1944, Jinheung in 1962, Nagdong and Tongil (Tonsil type) in 1971, Milyang#23 (Tongil type) in 1976, Hwasung in 1986, Ilpum in 1991, and Dasan (Tonsil type) in 1996. The more recent cultivars tended to have lower canopy light extinction coefficients (K). The K value was 0.601 in the oldest cultivar, Jodongji, and decreased below 0.5 in the cultivars released since 1971. Radiation use efficiency (RUE) was significantly different among cultivars before heading stage, showing no consistent tendency with the year of release and not significantly different after heading. Leaf area duration (LAD) was significantly different among varieties, and LAD values tended to be higher in the more recent cultivars. In particular, this tendency was more obscure in Tongil type cultivars. LAD of whole growth period had a significantly positive correlation with dry matter yield at harvest $(r=0.776^*)$. Dry matters measured at heading and harvest tended to be higher in recently released cultivars, but not significantly. The grain yield of Jodongji was the lowest but there was no significant difference among the other varieties in japonica, while higher yield occurred in the more recent Tongil type. Grain yield was correlated with grain number per square meter, and the more recent Tongil type cultivars had the greater grain number per square meter, In conclusion, not only the dry matter and grain yield but also related traits except K value showed no clear changes when compared with the year of their release in japonica cultivars. However, the increased grain yield in the more recent Tonsil type cultivars might have resulted from the enhanced LAD that lead to the higher dry matter production and in turn to the enlarged sink size.
The significance of environment change and genetic safety has been recently recognized by many genetically modified (GM) plants. This study was to evaluate the safety of drought-tolerant rice and to identify the environment variance. The GM rice of drought-tolerant rice and four check cultivars were analyzed the data on agronomic characters and principal component in large-GM crop field. There was no significant difference in agronomic characters between the drought-tolerant rice and donor plant, 'Ilmi'. Grain yield showed the standard deviation of the difference, did not significant statistically. Related to grain characters, grain appearance were similar to the drought-tolerant rice and donor plant, 'Ilmi'. In Chemical characters, brown rice of the drought-tolerant rice and a donor plant, 'Ilmi' did difference in starch and protein, however, was similar as 'Ilpum'. These results indicated that drought-tolerant rice may perform to detect genetic safety in GM plants progeny.
