  • A number of creep data were collected and filed for type 316LN stainless steels through literature survey and experimental data produced in KAERI. Using these data, polynomial equations for predicting creep life were obtained for Larson Miller (L-M), Qrr-Sherby-Dorn (O-S-D) and Manson-Haferd (M-H) parametric methods. In order to find out the suitability for them, the relative standard error (RSE) and standard error of estimate (SEE) values were obtained by statistical process of creep data. The O-S-D parameter showed better fitting to creep-rupture data than the L-M or the M-H parameters, and the three parametric methods did not generate the large difference in the SEE and the RSE values.

  • This study evaluates the variation of estimation error of area-average rainfall due to rainfall seasonality. Both the cases considering and not considering the spatial correlation are compared to derive the characteristics of estimation error. Similar cases with different accumulation time without considering the rainfall seasonality are also investigated. This study was applied to the Geum-river basin with total 28 rain gauge measurements haying more than 30 years of daily rainfall measurements. As results of the study we found that: (1) The absolute estimation error of monthly area-average rainfall show strong seasonality like the total rainfall amount. However, the relative estimation error normalized by its mean was estimated to have similar values about 5 to 8% except January and December. (2) The relative estimation error of annual area-average rainfall estimated was found to have the estimation error about 3% of its annual mean. (3) However, the relative estimation error normalized by the standard deviation remains almost the same for both monthly and annual rainfall amounts, which was estimated about 11% of its standard deviation. (4) Finally, the estimation error without considering the spatial correlation was found to become almost twice the estimation error with considering the spatial correlation.

  • An internal standard was used in PCID (post column isotope dilution) to improve the accuracy and precision in quantification of various chemical species. The error occurring in the column was the largest in HPLC-ICP/MS (high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry) when PCID and other traditional quantification methods were compared with each other. Internal standard was effective in correcting the loss of sample in the column to improve accuracy and precision. When applied to SeMet, using MeSecys or $Se^{4+}$ as an internal standard, relative errors were reduced from 31% and 13% to less than 1%, while standard deviations were reduced from 5.1% and 6.9% to 1.5% and 0.2%, respectively. Positive aspects of using an internal standard in PCID were compared with other quantitative techniques and discussed in detail.

  • Optimum conditions for making the Au and Al internal standards for TEM have been determined experimentally. The Au internal standard was produced by sputter coating at 9mA for 100 seconds in low vacuum $(\leq1\times10^{-3})$. The Al internal standard was produced by evaporation coating at 7kV for 10 minutes in high vacuum $(\leq1\times10^{-5})$. Measurements of the lattice parameters of andalusite and albite feldspars with this Au internal standard resulted in errors of (a) $ \leq1.2%$ in precion and $\leq0.3%$ in accuracy for andalusite: (b) $\leq0.5%$ in precision and $\leq1.1%$ in accuracy for albite feldspars. The most significant error occurred from the measuring processes of distances and angles of electron diffraction patterns. By employing systematic procedures of measurement with high precision devices, this lattice parameter determination method utilizing the internal standard should be a good alternative to the conventional powder XRD method or the sophisticated CBED method for special samples.

  • In this paper we analyze the main resources of error in GEO-satellite STFS(Standard Time & frequency Signal) dissemination system. For the case of small countries like Korea, we compare GEO-satellite STFS dissemination technique with the terrestrial network or with the GPS using LEO-satellites, and analyze its advantages over the forementioned systems. We also introduce the GEO-satellite STFS dissemination systems which are being developed or in service. Particularly, we put much efforts to develop the synchronization error calibration technique required to provide a highly accurate STFS service via KoreaSAT. We then propose the differential mode technique as the most effective and efficient calibration technique for mitigating errors in GEO-satellite STFS dissemination systems, and analyze its performance via computer simulation. We also analyze the relation between time accuracy and frequency accuracy. Our experimental results show that the time accuracy is better than 100 ns and the frequency accuracy is better than 10-13 over 7 days all around Korea peninsula. Finally, we propose methods to improve the performance of STFS dissemination system, and demonstrate that the proposed methods result in more accurate synchronization of GEO-satellite STFS.

  • In this paper, we have designed and implemented a system that utilizes a radar sensor to measure distance between a sensor and objects. The sensor module creates raw data and uploads the data on the distance measuring system, which detects the presence of objects by using standard deviation and average filters. The experiment found that an algorithm using average filters measured people with error rates of up to 9.7 meters and a maximum error rate of 0.02 meters or less. While in an algorithm using standard deviations, it was found that an object is measured at an error rate of up to a maximum distance of 9.7 meters and a maximum error rate of 0.15 meters. Therefore, we have concluded that if a distance was measured by using a radar sensor, algorithms using average filters resulted in a higher accuracy than standard deviations filters.

  • Bus Information System (BIS) services are expanding nationwide to small and medium-sized cities, including large cities, and user satisfaction is continuously improving. In addition, technology development related to improving reliability of bus arrival time and improvement research to minimize errors continue, and above all, the importance of information accuracy is emerging. In this study, accuracy performance was evaluated using LSTM, a machine learning method, and compared with existing methodologies such as Kalman filter and neural network. As a result of analyzing the standard error for the actual travel time and predicted values, it was analyzed that the LSTM machine learning method has about 1% higher accuracy and the standard error is about 10 seconds lower than the existing algorithm. On the other hand, 109 out of 162 sections (67.3%) were analyzed to be excellent, indicating that the LSTM method was not entirely excellent. It is judged that further improved accuracy prediction will be possible when algorithms are fused through section characteristic analysis.

  • Understanding characteristics of claypan soils has long been an issue for researchers and farmers because the high-clay subsoil has a pronounced effect on grain crop productivity. The claypan restricts water infiltration and storage within the crop root zone, but these effects are not uniform within fields. Conventional techniques of identifying claypan soil characteristics require manual probing and analysis which can be quite expensive; an expense most farmers are unwilling to pay. On the other hand, farmers would be very interested if this information could be obtained with easy-to-use field sensors. Two examples of sensors that show promise for helping in claypan soil characterization are soil profile strength sensing and bulk soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa). Little has been reported on claypan soils relating the combined information from these two sensors with grain crop yield. The objective of this research was to identify the relationships of sensed profile soil strength and soil EC with nine years of crop yield (maize and soybean) from a claypan soil field in central Missouri. A multiple-probe (five probes on 19-cm spacing) cone penetrometer was used to measure soil strength and an electromagnetic induction sensor was used to measure soil EC at 55 grid site locations within a 4-ha research field. Crop yields were obtained using a combine equipped with a yield monitoring system. Soil strength at the 15 to 45 cm soil depth were significantly correlated to crop yield and ECa. Estimated crop yields from apparent electrical conductivity and soil strength were validated with an independent data set. Using measurements from these two sensors, standard error rates for estimating yield ranged from 9 to 16%. In conclusion, these results showed that the sensed profile soil strength and soil EC could be used as a measure of the soil productivity for grain crop production.

  • Precise and accurate measuring of tooth size is essential procedure in orthodontic diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducibility and accuracy of tooth size measurements with regard to tooth and investigator. Five investigators measured the size of one side of teeth, from central incisor to first molar, on 20 sets of casts that show a moderate degree of crowding. Mesio-distal width was measured with digital vernier calipers in each tooth and this procedure was repeated three times at two weeks interval. To obtain a standard measurement for each tooth, dental casts were cut into individual tooth, and its width was measured with micrometer. The difference between the measurement from dental cast and the standard measurement was defined as the measurement error. Through various statistical analyses, following results were obtained. 1. The reproducibility did not show significant differences with regard to tooth or investigator. 2. The measurement error showed some difference with regard to tooth and investigator. 3. The magnitude of the measurement error showed increasing tendency from anterior to posterior teeth with maximum value in the first molar. 4. While the measurements obtained on study casts generally showed smaller number compared to standard measurements, the direction of the difference showed variability according to tooth or investigator. 5. The measurement errors did not show significant correlations with the degree of crowding. The results of the present study indicate that the possibility of tooth size measurement error should be taken into consideration when diagnosing an orthodontic case.
