  • In this paper the ball-on-disk type sliding tests with boundary lubricated steels were carried out to verify the relation between surface profiles and wear as well as scuffing. Three kinds of surface roughness and asperity radius were produced on AISI 1045 steels using the different processes of grinding and polishing. Frictional forces and time to scuffing were measured. Also, the shape and amount of wear particles were analyzed to compare with original profiles. From the tests, it was confirmed that the size of wear particles are very related to original surface profile. The time to failures and wear amounts were sensitive to the surface spacing. The large surface spacing shows much longer sliding life and smaller wear amount than the others. Time to scuffing was increased with increasing surface profile spacing. The sire of wear particles was increased and the amount was decreased with increasing surface profile spacing. Wear volume and wear rate K were decreased with increasing surface profile spacing. And after sliding tests, surface cracks of inner parts of the wear track occurred scuffing were observed and compared the differences about each specimen having the different surface profile spacing.

  • Laser surface texturing (LST) methods are applied recently to generate micro-dimples in machine components having parallel sliding surfaces such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals and piston rings, etc. And it is experimentally reported by several researchers that the micro-dimpled bearing surfaces can reduce friction force. Until now, however, theoretical results for various dimple parameters are not fully presented. In this paper, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT is used to investigate the effect of dimple depth on the lubrication characteristics of parallel thrust bearing. The results show that the pressure, velocity and density distributions within dimples are highly affected by dimple depths and cavitation conditions. Adoption of micro-dimple on the bearing surface can reduce the friction force highly and its levels are affected by dimple depth. The numerical methods and results can be use in design of optimum dimple characteristics to improve thrust bearing performance.

  • Gear transmission system is widely applied in engineering. As the problem of contact fatigue, wear, lubrication failure etc, the condition of gear teeth contacts will be worse. The vibration and sound signals in the gear system will be affected by the some failures like scuffing, abrasive wear and spalling due to the deterioration of gear teeth surface. By studying the estimation of specific film thickness, measurement of reduction in tooth thickness, visual examination of wear mechanisms on the gear teeth and their effects on the statistical parameters of vibration and sound signals, the research obtained the satisfactory results on accessing the surface fatigue wear in a spur gear system. The paper utilizes the relationship between statistical parameters obtained from sound signals and Stribeck curve to confirm the hypothesis of dependency of surface fatigue wear, specific film thickness.

  • The objective of this study was to characterize the role of synovial fluid and hyaluronan in the frictional response of bovine articular cartilage. Seven cylindrical cartilage specimens were harvested from three fresh bovine humoral heads (4-6 months old). Reciprocal sliding motion (1mm/s) was provided by a custom-made friction testing apparatus with a normal load of 22.3 N. From the measured time-dependent normal and frictional forces, the minimum and maximum frictional coefficients were calculated. Synovial fluid reduced the minimum frictional coefficient by ${\sim}75$ % and maximum frictional coefficient by ${\sim}11%$, while the reduction of the minimum and maximum frictional coefficients with hyaluronan was ${\sim}42%$ and ${\sim}24%$, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this experimental study investigates the first such comparisons of frictional response of articular cartilage with and without synovial fluid and hyaluronan, and provides significant insights into their role in the articular cartilage friction and lubrication.

  • The sliding contact interface of machine components such as bearings, gears frequently operates in lubrication at the inception of sliding failure under high loads, speed and slip. The surface temperature at the interface of bodies in a sliding contact is one of the most important factors influencing the behavior of machine components. Most surface failure in sliding contact region result from frictional heat generation. However, it is difficult to measure temperature rise experimentally. So the calculation of the surface temperature at a sliding contact interface has long been an interesting and important subject for tribologist. The surface temperature rise is related in contact pressure, sliding speed, material properties and lubrication thickness. Though roughness, load, ect all of the condition, are same, film thickness varies with velocity. In this study, surface temperature rise due to frictional heating in lubrication is calculated with various velocities. Surface film shearing and dry solid asperity contact are used to simulate the change of frictional heat in lubricated contact

  • Effect of surface topography on the water wetting nature and micro/nano tribological characteristics of Si-wafer and PTFE was experimentally studied. The ion beam treatment was performed with a hollow cathode ion gun in different argon don dose conditions in a vacuum chamber to change the surface topography, Micro/nano tribological characteristics, water wetting angles and roughness were measured with a micro tribo tester, SPM (scanning prove microscope), contact anglemeter and profilometer, respectively. Results showed that surface roughness increased with the argon ion dose. The water wetting angle of tile ion beam treated samples also increased with the ion dose. Results also showed that micro-adhesion and micro-friction depend on the wetting characteristics of the PTFE samples. However, nano-triboloSical characteristics showed little dependence on the wetting angles. The water wetting characteristics of modified PTFE samples were discussed in terms of the surface topographic characteristics.

  • The tribological role of mass transfer layer was studied with silver coatings under various ranges of load and sliding speed. Silver coating was performed with a functionally gradient coating method. Tests were performed in dry sliding conditions, using a ball-on-disk contact configuration, at the load of 0.0196-17.64 N and the sliding speed of 20-1,000 mm/s in ambient air. Optical microscope and EPMA analyses showed that contact surfaces were covered with the mass transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles depending upon the contact conditions, and they greatly influenced the tribological characteristics of the surfaces. However, the formation of mass transfer layer was suppressed as the sliding speed increased, and above a critical sliding speed, no mass transfer layer was able to form. For building up a general framework of tribological behavior of the coated silver films, all test data were summarized on a map whose axes are contact pressure and sliding speed.

  • The tribological characteristics of the swash plate surface of a compressor which is for automobile were investigated. For surface treatments, PTFE and $MoS_2$ are used as a solid lubricant, together with copper alloy. Test condition is set considering actual driving condition. Wear testing is conducted using pin on disk type tester, and the coefficient of friction and the temperature on friction surface are measured. Also, to determine the wear patterns, cross-section of friction surface is analyzed by SEM(scanning electrode microscope). The $MoS_2$, both at dry and lubricated conditions, friction surface and the coefficient of friction maintained rather stable results. But, the PTFE, at oil less condition, sample resulted in rather unstable condition. In case of copper alloy, quite higher friction coefficients(higher than 0.1) were obtained at dry condition. At the temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, seizure has occurred.

  • The tribological characteristics of TIN and DLC coated VCR drums were compared to conventional aluminum drums using a custom built accelerated testing set-up under varying temperature and humidity. It is found that the coated drums exhibit superior frictional properties at elevated temperature and high humidity compared to bare aluminum drum. Futhermore, the coated drums maintained their initial surface conditions over a wider range of temperature and humidity variation. As for the damage incurred to the tape, DLC coated drum was the most favorable of the three types of drums.
