  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants of different surfaces, namely, machined (untreated), etched (acid-etched), RBM (treated with resorbable blasting media) and hybrid (RBM + machined), with respect to the following criteria: physical appearance of the surface, measurement of surface roughness, and insertion pattern. Methods: Self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (Osstem implant, Seoul, Korea) with the abovementioned surfaces were obtained. Surface roughness was measured by using a scanning electron microscope and surface-roughness-testing machine, and torque patterns and vertical loadings were measured during continuous insertion of mini-implants into artificial bone (polyurethane foam) by using a torque tester of the driving-motor type (speed, 12 rpm). Results: The mini-implants with the RBM, hybrid, and acid-etched surfaces had slightly increased maximum insertion torque at the final stage ($p$ < 0.05). Implants with the RBM surface had the highest vertical load for insertion ($p$ < 0.05). Testing for surface roughness revealed that the implants with the RBM and hybrid surfaces had higher Ra values than the others ($p$ < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the implants with the RBM surface had the roughest surface. Conclusions: Surface-treated, self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants may be clinically acceptable, if controlled appropriately.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the torque resistance to removal of sandblasted large grit and acid etched (SLA) surface treated orthodontic mini-implants and smooth surface orthodontic mini-implants as well as performing histologic observations. Methods: Two groups of custom screw shaped orthodontic mini-implants (C-implant, 1.8 mm outer diameter $\times$ 9.5 mm length, Cimplant, Seoul, Korea) were designated. 22 SLA treated C-implants (SLA group) and 22 machined surface C-implants (machined group) were placed in the tibia metaphysis of 11 adult New Zealand white rabbits. Following a 6-week healing period, the rabbits were sacrificed. Subsequently, the C-implants were removed under reverse torque rotation with a digital torque measuring device and independent t-test was performed. Selected tissues were prepared for histologic observation. Results: The SLA group presented a higher mean removal torque value (6.286 Ncm) than the machined group (4.491 Ncm) which was statistically significant (p < 0.005). Histologic observation revealed a trend of more new bone formation in contact with the screw surface in the SLA group than the smooth group. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that SLA surface treatment can enhance the osseintegration potential for C-orthodontic mini-implants.

  • Objective: Surface characteristics of dental materials play an important role in bacterial adhesion. The purpose of this study was to investigate surface characteristics of 5 different light-cured orthodontic adhesives (1 fluoride-releasing composite, 3 non-fluoride-releasing composites, and f resin-modified glass ionomer). Methods: Surface roughness was measured using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Contact angle and surface free energy components were analyzed using the sessile drop method. Results: Surface roughness was significantly different between adhesives despite a relatively small variation (less than $0.05\;{\mu}m$). Lightbond and Monolok2 were rougher than Enlight and Transbond XT. There were also significant differences in contact angles and surface free energy components between adhesives. In particular, considerable differences in contact angles and surface free energy components were found between resin modified glass ionomer and the composites. Resin modified glass ionomer showed significantly smaller contact angles in 3 different probe liquids and had higher total surface free energy and stronger polarity, with notably stronger basic property than the composites. Conclusion: Resin modified glass ionomer may provide a more favourable environment for bacterial adhesion than composite adhesives.

  • Objective: The need to bond orthodontic brackets onto various alloys has increased because of the increasing demand for adult orthodontic treatment. This study tried to evaluate the shear bond strength between gold alloy and metal bracket using light emitting diode (LED) light curing after metal primer and silicoating surface conditioning. Methods: Half of the type III gold alloy plates were treated with sandblasting with aluminum oxide and metal primer containing 4-META. the other half were treated with silica and silane. Metal brackets were bonded with Transbond XT light curing adhesive on these plates and shear bond strength were evaluated 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours later. The differences of shear bond strength between groups were evaluated with two-way ANOVA. Results: The results showed higher bond strength in the silicoating group and a tendency of bond strength increase over time. Conclusions: When using LED curing lights for metal bracket bonding to alloy surfaces, long curing time and silicoating can produce a reliable bonding strength.

  • Objective: The surface roughness of orthodontic materials is an essential factor that determines the coefficient of friction and the effectiveness of tooth movement. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surface roughness change of the brackets and wires after experimental sliding quantitatively. Methods: Before and after experimental sliding tests, the surface roughness of stainless steel brackets, ceramic brackets, stainless steel wires, and beta-titanium (TMA) wires were investigated and compared using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Results: After sliding tests, changes in the surface of the wire were greater than changes in the bracket slot surface. The surface roughness of the stainless steel bracket was not significantly increased after sliding test, whereas the roughness of ceramic brackets was decreased. Both the surface roughness of stainless steel and TMA wires were increased after sliding test. More changes were observed on the ceramic bracket than the stainless steel bracket. Conclusions: AFM is a valuable research tool when analyzing the surface roughness of the brackets and wires quantitatively.

  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a self-polymerizing resin for removable orthodontic devices, has been used as a dental orthodontic device for many years because of its advantages such as color stability, volume stability, and tissue compatibility. However, such a removable orthodontic device has a disadvantage that the longer the use in the oral cavity due to the low strength of the PMMA fracture of the orthodontic device resin in use. In this study, zinc nanoparticles (ZNP) were mixed with orthodontic PMMA to introduce strength effect. Rectangular samples ($1.4{\times}3.0{\times}19.0mm$) of orthodontic PMMA (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0%) containing ZNP were prepared. The finished specimen was tested for three-point bending strength at a speed of 1 mm / min, and the Vickers hardness was measured three times using a hardness tester. The surface roughness was measured with a surface roughness. As a result, the 3-point bending strength did not change significantly (p>0.05). Surface energy increased significantly. As a result, we successfully synthesized ZNP in this study and prepared the dispersed resin specimen for calibration. It will be possible to develop high-density dental orthodontic resins.

Enamel surface of the 40 Intact premolars were treated by aicd etching and various fluoride application methods and then maintained in the patient mouth of 3 months. After extraction of all the sampled premolars, enamel surfaces were evaluated by Scanning electron microscope. The obtained results were as follow. 1. Enamel surface relate to bonded orthodontic bracket showed demineralization and damage, slightly. 2. Group 6 treated by $2\%$ NaF iontophoresis presented and almost similarity to nomral enamel surface. 3. Group 2 treated by acid etching had demineralization and damage on the enamel surface much more than other groups treated by various fluoride application methods. 4.
