  • The purpose of study was to assess the influence of acidic drinks on the erosion of tooth enamel and the effect of fluoridated saliva on the remineralization. Twenty five drinks were sampled. The erosive potential and remineralizing effect were measured by the tooth surface microhardness test. The pH of most drinks were below pH 5.5. Reduction rates of enamel surface hardness by the flavored carbonated drink were 16.90%, 25.11%, 35.10%, and 41.62% after 5, 10, 30, and 60 minutes of demineralization, and recovery rates by remineralizaing solution were 61.52%, 67.96%, 72.13% and 75.93% after 1, 24, 48, and 72 hours of remineralization, respectively. The results suggest that the most drinks in the markets have the potential to erode the teeth and that erosion occurs fast but remineralization proceeds slowly.

  • Many operations have been carried out using the fluoride ion to prevent and reverse dental caries. It certainly encourages remineralization and also prevents dental caries. However, the remineralization developed by these means is superficial only leaving lower levels of demineralized lesion with a degree of porosity and incomplete mineralization. We must consider its toxic effects when it is ingested for overdose. The CPP-ACP paste is able to remineralize the incipient lesion and has no harmful effects when it is ingested, because it was made form casein which is from the protein of milk. The purpose of this article is to compare the remineralization effects between APF gel and the CPP-ACP paste. we applicated the APF gel and CPP-ACP paste on the artificial enamel carious lesion. After 14 days, we measured the surface microhardness and observed the remineralized lesion under polarized light microscope. The results were as follows : 1. The surface microhardness of group III was the highest, followed by group II, and I(p<0.05). 2. The surface microhardness of group III was significantly higher than those of group I, and II(p<0.05). 3. We could observe thin and irregular remineralization layer of group II, and regular and moderate remineralization layer of group III under polirized light microscope.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the effects on the resistance to demineralization by the frequency and method of fluoride application in vitro. ninety-one human enamel specimens were embedded in acrylic resin with the labial surfaces exposes. The specimens were divided into 7 groups; (1) non-treated; (2) 1.23% APF gel 1 time; (3) 2% NaF sol 1 time; (4) 2% NaF sol iontophoresis 1 time; (5) 1.23% APF gel 4 time; (6) 2% NaF sol 4 time; (7) 2% NaF sol iontophoresis 4 time. All the groups were immersed in the remineralizing solution (RS) before baseline and divided into 7 test groups of 13 specimens each. All the specimens were exposed to a pH-cycling model which consisted of demineralization (6 hours) and remineralization (18 hours) for 5 days. The Vickers surface micro-hardness number of all the specimens was measured using microhardness tester and the specimen surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed a Tukey's multiple comparison at a significance level of 0.05. The group 7 showed higher level of microhardness after Fluoride application. The group 1 showed lowest level of microhardness but group 7 showed higher level of microhardness after pH-cycling model, there were significant differences between groups. After the modified pH-cycling, the 2% NaF solution with the iontophoresis group showed the best resistance to demineralization(p<0.05). These results were also confirmed by SEM. The fluoride iontophoresis method was the most effective of the regimens in increasing the acid resistance of the enamel.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate tooth whitening and microhardness after treatments with tooth bleaching agents containing dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) which were used in-office bleaching. Thirty enamel specimens were obtained from human premolars and randomly divided into 3 groups(n=10). Tooth bleaching agents were prepared with DCPD (0 g for controls, 0.1 g and 1 g for experimental groups) and HP solution (35% HP). All groups were applied to enamel surfaces for 60 min for 1 day. The pH of each tooth bleaching agent was measured. Tooth color, microhardness of enamel surfaces were also measured. The tooth bleaching agents containing DCPD showed a significant increase in pH compared to the ones without DCPD(p<0.05). Paired t-tests showed significant difference in color values of enamel before and after bleaching in all the groups(p<0.05). As a result, changes in color, containing DCPD group does not contain a statistically significant difference between groups was observed.(p>0.05). In all groups, tooth hardness after bleaching showed a significant decrease in microhardness (p<0.05). However, the DCPD concentration increased in the bleaching, microhardness values slightly decreased. Based on the above results, tooth bleaching agents containing DCPD and 35%HP were equally effective. Due to increases in pH and effective reduction of tooth surface decalcification, the surface characteristics are exposed to a reduced degree of negative effects, resulting in fewer constituent enamel alterations. Thus, commercial availability of the constituents of tooth whitening materials can be achieved.

  • Plasma Transferred Arc Spray process was used to make modified surface for wear and corrosion resistant by using Co system powder type alloy. The modified surface was produced by changing only spray current and other process variables were constant. The current range was from 80 amp to 140 amp as inclosing 20 amp. It was appeared that the geometrical shape, microstructures and microhardness of the modified surface were affected by the different cooling rate of base metal. The modified surface that produced by 120 amp current exhibited the fine microstructure and the highest microhardness number impling good surface characteristics. It was also found that the spray current affected the width but not the height of the bead as increasing current.

  • Newly developed curing units(plasma arc curing units) operate at relatively high intensity and are claimed to result in optimum properties of composite resin in a short curing time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microhardness and microleakage at the resin-tooth interface of two types of composite resins polymerized with visible light and plasma arc curing units. The results from the present study can be summarized as follows 1. Microhardness in each depth was shown to be higher in group AHL than AP3 & AP6. Group ZHL was lower than AP6 at surface(p<0.05) and had no statistically significant difference at 1mm and 2mm(p>0.05). In other depths, group ZHL was higher than ZP3 and ZP6(p<0.05). 2. The incremental reduction in microhardness with depth was shown to be in all group except in surface-1mm of group AHL and $1{\sim}2mm$ of group ZHL(p<0.05). 3. Degree of microleakage in all oops were shown to be higher in gingival margin than occlusal margin but no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 4. Differences between curing methods in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant difference(p>0.05). 5. Differences between composite resins in microleakage were shown to be no statistically significant differ once(p>0.05).

  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of Nd:YAG laser irradiation and fluorides on acid drink demineralized enamel. The materials were 30 freshly extracted permanent premolars with intact smooth enamel surfaces. They were demineralized with Coca-cola at $37^{\circ}C$ for 12hours and then irradiated by Nd:YAG laser with 6W power, $50mJ/cm^2$ energy density, and 20Hz pulse repetition. After laser irradiation, teeth were treated by three kinds of fluorides; (1)0.05% NaF fluoride solution (2)1.23% APF gel and (3)0.1%F fluoride varnish, microhardness(VHN) and Diagnodent scores were measured and the surfaces of each treated specimens were also observed with SEM under 1500 magnification. The results were as follows: 1. In the change of microhardness(VHN), it decreased to 34.68% from the initial micrhardness, increased to 78.37% after laser irradiation and increased to 82.62% after fluoride treatment, there were significant differences except when it was irradiated and treated with fluoride(P<0.05). 2. In the change of Diagnodent scores, it was decreased to 28.08% from the initial scores after demineralization, and then increased to 59.81% after laser irradiation, and increased to 82.17% after fluoride treatment. Scores were different significantly between the scores of initial, demineralization, laser irradiation and fluoride treatment(P<0.05). All the scores were not different significantly between fluoride types. 3. SEM observation showed that the lased enamel surfaces after demineralization were thermally degenerated and showed molten lava-like appearance and crater with cracks and many microholes.
