An experimental investigation was performed under steady flow condition to assess hydrodynamic performance of floating-type monoleaflet polymer valves (MLPV) withdifferent leaflet thickness. The St. Jude Medical valve (SJMV) was also used for comparison test. Pressure drops of MLPVS are larger than those for other types of polymer valves and mechanical valves. Furthermore, the thicker is the leaflet thickness of the polymer valve, the larger are the corresponding pressure drop. The velocity profiles for MLPs reveal a large reversed flow region downward to the valve position. The maximum wall shear stresses of MLPVS at a flow rate of $30{\ell}$/min are in the range 50-130 dyn/$cm^2$, and the corresponding maximum Reynolds shear stresses are in the range of 100-500 dyn/$cm^2$, respectively, which are beyond the allowable limit clinically. In contrast, floating-type monoleaflet polymer valves show better hydrodynamic performance in leakage volume. From the designing point of view, it may be concluded that the optimum thickness of leaflet for better hydrodynamic performance is one of the Important parameters.

The PSP technique has been used to measure pressure distribution on model surfaces ins high-speed flows. The objective of this study is to develop a PSP technique which can be applied to low-speed aerodynamic flows. Four different PSP formulations including two porphyrins (PtOEP and PtTFPP) and two polymers (Poly(TMSP) and RTV-118) were tested and the performance of each combination was evaluated. In a static calibration, the luminescent intensity of the PSP coatings was measured from 0kPa to 11kPa with 0.5, 1, 2kPa increments. Among 4 PSP formulations tested, the combination of PtOEP and RTV-118 shows the best performance. The developed PSP technique was applied to an oblique impinging jet to measure the pressure field distribution on the impinging plate.
Polyalphaolefin (PAO) is a synthetic lubricant that is superior to mineral-based lubricants in terms of physical and chemical characteristics such as low pour point (PP), and high viscosity index (VI). This paper first reports a novel preparation route for a synthetic lubricant via alkylation of isoparaffins using a peroxide initiator without olefin. Alkylation of three kinds of isoparaffins such as i-$C_{16}$, i-$C_{18}$, and i-$C_{23}$ as well as alkylation of i-$C_{18}$ with 2-pentene using di-tert butyl peroxide initiator were conducted under various conditions to confirm alkylation reaction from isoparaffins themselves i.e; Single-molecule alkylation. Various properties of each alkylates (VI and PP) were investigated as a synthetic lubricant. Single-molecule alkylation made from i-$C_{16}$ a,nd i-$C_{18}$ showed ultra high VI (>140) and low PP (< $-30^{\circ}C$).

Polyalphaolefin (PAO) is a synthetic lubricant that is superior to mineral-based lubricants in the terms of physical and chemical characteristics such as low pour point, high viscosity index (VI), and thermal and oxidation stability. Several kinds of PAOs have been synthesized by using 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, or 1-dodecene as monomer with three kinds of aluminum-based Lewis acid catalysts via cationic polymerization. The control of the catalytic performance and physical properties of PAO such like molecular weight, kinematic viscosity, pour point, and viscosity index was done by changing polymerization parameters. The alkyl aluminum halide-based catalysts show better catalytic activity than that of the conventional $AlCl_3$ catalyst. The microstructure of PAO was investigated by means of TOF-MS (time of flightmass spectroscopy) analysis in order to elucidate the correlation between the performances of the lubricant (VI, pour point) and the molecular structure of PAO. The VI of PAO increases with increases in the carbon number of ${\alpha}$-olefin. In other words, the performances of PAO as a lubricant strongly depended on the branch length of PAO.

The objective of this study is to develop analytical techniques of polymer impregnated concrete flexural members for its proper applications. crystalline methylmethacrylate(MMA) is chosen as a monomer of polymer impregnants, On the basis of members. fracture toughness, fracture energy , critical crack width, and tension softening relations near crack tip are formulated in terms of member depth, initial notch length and the flexural strength of normal concrete. The structural analysis rocedure and the finite element computer program developed in the study are applicable to evaluate elastic behavior, ultimate strength, and tension softening behavior of MMA type PIC structural members subject to various loading conditions. It is concluded that the developed structural analysis procedure and the finite element computer program are applicable to analysis and design of in-situ and precast PIC structural members.

Non-proportional loading tests of Nylon 66 at room temperature exhibit path dependent behavior and plasticity-relaxation interactions. The uniaxial formulation of the viscoplasticity theory based on overstress (VBO), which has been used to reproduce the nonlinear strain rate sensitivity, relaxation, significant recovery and cyclic softening behaviors of Nylon 66, is extended to three-dimensions to predict the response in strain-controlled, comer-path tests. VBO consists of a flow law that is easily written for either the stress or the strain as the independent variable. The flow law depends on the overstress, the difference between the stress and the equilibrium stress that is a state variable in VBO. The evolution law of the equilibrium stress in turn contains two additional state variables, the kinematic stress and the isotropic stress. The simulations show that the constitutive model is competent at modeling the deformation behavior of Nylon 66 and other solid polymers.

The Hot Embossing Lithography(HEL) as a method fur the fabrication of the nanostructure with polymer is becoming increasingly important because of its simple process, low cost, high replication fidelity and relatively high throughput. In this paper, we carried out experimental studies and numerical simulations in order to understand the viscous flow of the polymer (PMMA) film during the hot embossing process. To grasp the characteristics of the micro patterning rheology by process parameters (embossing temperature, pressure and time), we have carried out various experiments by using the nickel-coated master fabricated by the deep RIE process and the plasma sputtering. During the hot embossing process, we have observed the characteristics of the viscoelastic behavior of polymer. Also, the viscous flow during the hot embossing process has been simulated by the continuum based FDM(Finite Difference Method) analysis considering the micro effect, such as a surface tension and a contact angle.
Maximum drag reduction (MDR) in turbulent channel flow by polymer additives is studied by direct numerical simulation. An Oldroyd-B model is adopted to express the polymer stress because it is believed that MDR is closely related to the elasticity of the polymeric liquids. The Reynolds number based on the bulk velocity and the channel height is 40000. MDR in the present study is $44{\%}$ and this is in a good agreement with the Virk's asymptote. Turbulence statistics are also in good agreements with the experimental observation. In the 'large drag reduction', the decrease of turbulent kinetic energy is compensated by the increase of energy transfer from the polymer to the flow. Therefore, MDR is a dynamic equilibrium state of the energy transfer between the polymer and the flow.
This paper presents a fabrication method of microcapsules encapsulating fluorescent nanoparticles sensitive to an organic liquid, which is potentially applicable to the encapsulation of protein, cell and drug. It uses the supra-molecular self-assembly of a block copolymer at the interface of the stable and controllable droplets of water suspended with fluorescent nanoparticles and the polymer solved organic. The size and uniformity of the microcapsules were examined for the various polymer concentrations by using SEM image analysis. The maximum standard deviation of the produced microcapsules of less than 3.5% was obtained from the microcapsules produced from the same conditions. The inclusion of fluorescent nanoparticles was visualized in the fluorescence microscope and by using TEM image. It is shown that this fabrication method can provide the uniform size microcapsules with a higher inclusion.
