  • The objective of this paper is to obtain the basic data in order to develop an eco-friendly concrete through evaluation on the properties of polymer cement mortar and concrete using PVAc (Polyvinyl Acetate), as a kind of water-soluble polymer. For this purpose, the physical properties of cement mortar and concrete which does not contain the PVAc as the control batch were compared and analyzed with those using the PVAc. And then, the replacement amount of the PVAc was 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% by binder, respectively. And also, the properties of concrete using the PVAc were evaluated, by adding an antifoaming agent in order to control the air contents increasing with an increase of amount of polymer usage. As a result, in the case of polymer cement mortar using the PVAc, it presented that the compressive strength reduced, while the performance of flexural strength and drying shrinkage increased. When the replacement of the PVAc was 6% within concrete, the compressive, tensile, flexural strength and elastic modulus were increased.

  • Recently, the disposal of used vehicle tires is a big social problem because the amount of used vehicle tires has been increased with development of' automobile industry. Many researches have been made on the recycling of used vehicle tires in the various fields of industry as well as construction industry. When the crumb rubber made of vehicle tires is mixed in cement concrete and mortar, it is indicated that the adhesive strength of interface between the crumb rubber and cement hydrates is very low. The purpose of this study is to improve the fundamental properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SF3R) latex coated crumb rubber in ; cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated crumb rubber have a good fundamental properties compared with that using uncoated crumb rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using crumb rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

  • Polymer-modified mortars have an excellent water proofness and water retentivity. Therefore, the study on the moisture diffusion behavior- is very important. The purpose of' this study is to investigate the effects of relative humidity and moisture content in mortars on the moisture diffusion, and the relationship between the shrinkage and moisture diffusion coefficient of polymer-modified mortars cured at $20{\circ}C$ 50% R.H and 80% R.H. The pore size distribution of the polymer-modified mortars was also measured. From the test results, the relative humidity and moisture content in mortars influenced on the moisture diffusion of polymer-modified mortars. The shrinkage and moisture diffusion coefficient of polymer-modified mortars cured at $20{\circ}C$ 50% R.H. was bigger than that cured at $20{\circ}C$ 80% R.H.. and decreased with increasing polymer-cement ratio regardless of polymer type.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars based on styrene and butyl acrylate latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. This paper deals with the effects of monomer ratio on the typical properties of the polymer-modified mortars with styrene and butyl acrylate latexes. The polymer-modified mortars using the styrene and butyl acrylate latexes polymerized with various monomer ratios are prepared with different polymer-cement ratios, and tested for the particle size of polymer latexes, air contents, water-cement ratios, flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption, and chloride-ion penetration. From the test results, the polymer-modified mortars using styrene and butyl acrylate latexes with the mix proportions of synthesis having monomer ratios of 50:50 to 60:40 for the appropriate mix proportions can be recommended for practical applications. Their basic properties are greatly affected by the polymer-cement ratio rather than the monomer ratio, and are improved over un-modified mortar.

  • Test specimens of polymer-cement concrete composites were prepared using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, ethylenevinyl acetate(EVA) and polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsions as polymer dispersions in cement modified system at constant slump($10{\pm}0.5cm$), then compressive and flexural strengths water absorption, pore size distribution, and microstructures were investigated. Compressive and flexural strengths of these composites were remarkably improved with an increase of polymer-cement ratio. These composites had a desirable pore size distribution against frost damage due to a small capillary pore volume. Continuous polymer film was able to form in higher than 15% of polymer cement ratio.

  • In this research the physical properties of polymer modified mortar containing pulverized FRP(Fiber-Reinforced Plastics) wastes fine powder as a part of fine aggregate were investigated. Styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsion and ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVA) emulsion were used as Polymer modifier. Polymer modified mortars containing FRP wastes fine powder were prepared with various FRP wastes fine powder replacement(5∼30 wt%) for fine aggregate and polymer-cement ratios(5∼20 wt%). The water-cement ratio, water absorption rates and hot water immersion test, compressive and flexural strengths of polymer modified mortars were tested and the results compared to those of ordinary portland cement mortar. As the results, compressive and flexural strengths of polymer modified mortar containing FRP wastes fine powder depend on the contents of FRP wastes fine powder, type and additional amounts of polymer modifier. Some of them showed higher compressive and flexural strengths than those of ordinary portland cement mortar. Especially, SBR-modified mortar showed the highest strengths properties among three types of polymer modifier. Also water absorption rates, compressive and flexural strengths of SBR-modified mortar were more superior than those of PAE or EVA-modified mortar. The optimum mix proportions of SBR-modified mortar was 20 wt% of polymer-cement ratio and 20 wt% of FRP wastes fine powder replacement. Otherwise heat cured polymer modified mortar accelerated the improvement of early compressive and flexural strengths.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the engineering properties of permeable polymer concrete with fillers and unsaturated polyester resin. The following conclusions were drawn. 1. The highest strength was achieved by stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete, it was increased 17% by compressive, 148% by tensile and 188% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 2. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.17{\times}10^5{\sim}1.32{\times}10^5kg/cm^2$, which was approximately 53~56% of that of the normal cement concrete. Stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete was showed relatively higher elastic modulus. The poisson's number of permeable polymer concrete was less than that of the normal cement concrete. 3. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.3{\times}10^5{\sim}1.5{\times}10^5kg/cm^2$, which was approximately less compared to that of the normal cement concrete. Stone dust filled permeable polymer concrete was showed higher dynamic modulus. The dynamic modulus of elasticity were increased approximately 10~13% than that of the static modulus. 4. The water permeability was in the range of $3.076{\sim}4.390{\ell}/cm^2/h$, and it was largely dependent upon the mix design. These concrete can be used to the structures which need water permeability. 5. The compressive strength, tensile strength, bending strength and elastic modulus were largely showed with the decrease of water permeability.

  • The effects of polymer-cement ratio, antifoamer content and shrinkage-reducing agent content on the air content, setting time, drying shrinkage and strength of high-fluidity polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder are examined. As a result, the air content of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tends to decrease nth increasing polymer-cement ratio and antifoamer content. Regardless of the antifoamer content, the setting time of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tends to delayed with increasing polymer-cement ratio. Irrespective of the antifoamer content, the drying shrinkage of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tend to decrease with increasing polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content. Regardless of the antifoamer content, the flexural and tensile strengths of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder tends to increase with increasing polymer-cement ratio, and tend to decrease with increasing shrinkage-reducing agent content. However, the compressive strength of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powder decreases with increasing polymer-cement ratio and shrinkage-reducing agent content.

  • Effect of the polymer-binder ratio and slag content on the properties of combined wet/dry-cured polymer-modified mortars using granulated blast-furnace slag are examined. Results shows that the flexural and compressive strengths of polymer-modified mortar using the slag tend to increase with increasing slag content, and reaches a maximum at a slag content of 40 %, and is inclined to increase with increasing polymer-binder ratio. Water absorption, carbonation depth and chloride ion penetration depth tend to decrease with increasing polymer-binder ratio and slag content. Accordingly, the incorporation of slag into polymer-modified mortars at a slag content of 40% is recommended for a combined wet/dry curing regardless of the types of polymer.
